What do you call her?

I call her Aeris, simply because that's her name in the version of the game in this country. So she's always been Aeris to me.

Also, those who call her Aerith, but have the game is parts of the world where she is "Aeris" why do you call her Aerith?

It's like calling "Goku" from DBZ "Son Gokuu" because that's his name in Japanese versions, yet never see anyone do that, so what's the difference?

(This isn't meant to be a rant or whatever, I'm just curious)

I call her "Aeris" but I type it "Aerith". At least here in the Forums, and in other Forums. When I'm just typing or talking to a friend, I use "Aeris". Because I prefer it. -shrugs-

I think Aeris sounds prettier, and I did kinda get used to it for like 10 years, I actually thought Aerith was a mispelling in the Guide or a magazine whereever I read it. Although, Ive gotten abit more used to using Aerith recently what with playing Crisis Core and seeing it throw around here alot

I know what you mean though, I know that's her proper name, but it's not one WE have been used to. It's almost like, people are saying, you aren't a proper fan because you dfon't knwo her real name, uh, yes I do, I just prefer Aeris because Aerith makes me feel like Ive got a lisp. I will throw both names around though - I have gotten used to using Aerith around here aswel xD

Saying it out loud though....... xD

I always type Aeris because thats how im used to reading it, but i think Aerith sounds much better. It rolls off the tongue and just sounds better than Aeris. Aeris sounds like a car air freshener.
'Scuse me miss can i have a lemon aeris for my car please?'

That's her name in one game in this country. In AC, CC, KH 1, CoM, and 2, she's Aerith. She's also Aerith when you reset all names to pre naming screen default and in a thousand or so copies of FF7 itself.

Also, those who call her Aerith, but have the game is parts of the world where she is "Aeris" why do you call her Aerith?

Because Aerith is correct. The prime source says Aerith. The new translated sources say Aerith.

It's like calling "Goku" from DBZ "Son Gokuu" because that's his name in Japanese versions, yet never see anyone do that, so what's the difference?

The difference is that A: Akira toriyama hasn't been making the translators use Son Goku but B: Square Enix has been translating her name as Aerith, and it has always been that. Aeris was a pointless change in translation.

I've not played CC or any of the other games mentioned. Seen AC but as I remember her name is never actually spoken, and I haven't payed attention to the end credits.

When I've played FFVII, she's Aeris, and always has been to me.

Because Aerith is correct. The prime source says Aerith. The new translated sources say Aerith.

Aeris is also correct, it's not "wrong" to call her either name.

Also check the word I've put in bold.

Pointless or not, in this country she was named Aeris in FFVII. So that's how I remember her, I wouldn't just start calling her "Aerith" because they've changed their minds about the translation.

the real name seems to be Aerith and I also type it that way.
But I like to call her "Aeris" it sounds feminine and pretty just like her.

I used to call her "Aeris" all the time, but in other games I've seen her in (KH games, DoC manual, the friggin CC game with voice actors xD), she's called "Aerith", so I just see "Aeris" as a mistranslation at the time of FFVII, that's all.

Both versions of her name are pretty, but I've always been partial to Aerith. Unlike a lot of the hardcore FF gamers, I didn't get into the series until just a few years ago, so I didn't know at first that her name was mistranslated as Aeris. Aerith is the correct way to say her name though, and I've become really used to it, so I probably will always use Aerith over Aeris.

Things would probabably be different if I had called her Aeris for over ten years though xD

But that does make any of the other games non existant, nor does it mean you can simply ignore them.

And when I played KH, KH:CoM, and CC, she was Aerith. As she was in the credits of AC.

Aeris is also correct, it's not "wrong" to call her either name.

It is acceptable, but it is incorrect if we want to get technical. It is an error, either deliberate or unintentional, made in translation.

Also check the word I've put in bold.

Yes, all the translated sources but the original, shoddy translation say Aerith. All the translations done by Square themselves say Aerith. All of the prime sources say Aerith.
BTW, if we want to play the asinine "older is better" game, the english FF7 demo disc said Aerith.

Pointless or not, in this country she was named Aeris in FFVII. So that's how I remember her, I wouldn't just start calling her "Aerith" because they've changed their minds about the translation.

They haven't 'changed their minds' about the translation. They've corrected the mistranslation the original translators put in.

But it was still Aeris for a good few years, you can't expect people to just stop calling her Aeris just because its a translation error. Would you stop calling Tifa Tifa if you found out her name was mistraslated and meant to be called Bob? At the end of the day, there will still be ALOT of people that call her Aeris, and will continue to do so because that is what it was set at as the original name in our releases

Like I said, I had no idea she was meant to be called Aerith til I signed up on here, I thought Aerrith was the mistranslation, so you can't expect people to get used to calling her Aerith if they don't want to. Some people will always see her as that. I'm sur ein all the subsequent spin offs and whatever, they toyed with the idea of calling her Aeris for consistency, but just thought they'd go with Aerith as that is what it was intended to be, and if they remke VII - sure it'l be Aerith. Doen't mean people will stop seeing her as Aeris though

Bottom line is, neither are incorrect. Aeris is what we Westerners got used to for many a year. You can't call a person wrong for still wanting to call her that over Aerith. At the end of the day it's a video game and you can change her damn name to Dog Shit if you want.

I always say Aerith. Because I have a poster with that name on it. Also I played Kingdom Hearts before FFVII so I'm more used to Aerith. When playing FFVII I always change it to Aerith aswell. I've always seen it as one of the many translation errors FFVII has.

I call her Aerith, because that is her correct name, Aeris was nothing but another translation mistake from Sony like the phrase "this guy are sick." I don't really mind if people call her Aeris though, as long as they don't try to say its her correct name.

Settle down. This wasn't even the point of the thread to begin with. It doesn't matter what's correct or not. The question was what do you prefer to call her, Aerith or Aeris, not who's right and who's wrong. There's no need to go at people and try to prove them wrong just because they prefer to call her Aeris/Aerith.

I agree that Aeris is not correct, but I don't think it's wrong to type or call her that, since that's what a lot of people are used to. ^^; I call her Aeris for that reason, but I wouldn't claim it's the right translation. =P

I never said I was ignoring them or they do not exist, you missed the point. The point was, playing through FFVII, she was "Aeris" and every replay I've done she's been "Aeris." It's how I know her, and even if I had played the other games, I'd still think of her as Aeris, because that's how I've known her since the original game was released.

If/when I do eventually play through Crisis Core or watch the ending credits of Advent Children, maybe I will start getting used to Aerith, but as it stands, when I speak of her or see her, she's Aeris to me.

As for the whole "older is better" crap, there's no need for comments like that. I've not once said or implied that in any way. I've simply said she's always been "Aeris" to me and it's what I am used to.

Regardless of the translation issue, she was Aeris in FFVII. So it's not "wrong" to call her that.

Aeris

Definatley Aeris, the only reason is because ever since i started playing at such a young age i called her aeris but when kingdom hearts and crisis core were released and called her Aerith with no reason why?

it makes me very sad :sad2:

I wasn't. I said I prefer Aerith because it's correct. Flux was the one who took issue with my saying Aerith was incorrect.

Yes. Yes it is. Just as Robotech is a 'wrong' translation of Macross. It doesn't mean it's somehow horrific or a massive breach to discuss Robotech, but Robotech is 'wrong' to the rest of the Macross continuity. Same with Aeris.

Let me make this simple- Aerith correct, Aeris incorrect. Aerith acceptable, Aeris also acceptable.

I used to call her Aeris, until the Kingdom Hearts games and the Compilation, when I switched to calling her Aerith instead ^_^

Aerith is definitely what was intended, and it was mistranslated as "Aeris" in the original FF7 (in fact, I started to rename Aeris to Aerith on all new playings of FF7, too)...
