PC Dawn Of War

I've actually beaten an insane enemy....very hard stuff though. But I used a few tricks like "destroy HQ mission". I was a(guess what?) space marine and fighting with an eldar. And I was playing the original Dawn of War with no add-ons/mods/patches. Sooo bloody....I've killed like two or three Avatars before I deep striked 3 dreads and two squads of terminators in his base and blasted to hell that Webway assembly.^_^
On Winter Asault or Dark Cruasde it's harder...not impossible...but very difficult.

kwl, im gonna have to try it, but go on insane enamy and go against the necrons as the space marines, you really wont do to well on it, its mental the amount of people they send at you, i thought that my defence of grey knights, space marine squads fully armed, four dreadnoughts, a land raider and tw oterminator squads would be enough along with all of the bolter turrets i could buy, and the necrons just came along and battered everything before i knew what was happening, they just slaughtered everything before i could take any action against them

So they drowned you in troops>_<....one word....Whirlwind. It's a divine tank when facing massed infantry(especially orks). By the way...also try using the librarian's "word of the emperor" power when charging into close combat. Your troops will be immune to death for two minutes or something like that. Very useful to turn the battle around. Also bombard the place where you know they usually attack....or place mines in that place. Won't kill them...but will surely weaken them.^_^
Eh enough theorethical advices....when I have the time I will try it and tell you the results.^_^

lol ok, i will try those tactics out as well, if i can build up quickly enough lol im not very quick when it comes to building up, i will admit that i do go quicker on the harder difficulties but im still not quick enough, i think i dont use my res efficiently enough, i ned to plan things out more often as well

Unfortunately very few players are fast enough for an insane enemy(I know I'm not one of them....but someday:rolleyes:) but you have to take advantages of a few things like "arrange" your starting position in an isolated area, and "fix" your opponent's location so that you know where to attack when you have the forces. Also never play on an 1 vs 1 map. That's simply insane:-)lol:). And know whom you're fighting against....eldar/imperial guard/orks means heavy bolter, chaos, necrons, tau means plasma gun. Use the frag grenades as much as possible. I also never leave home without a flamer on each squad and two scout squads with snipers(low morale on enemy infantry is always welcome).

sounds like a good way of doing it, i recently went back on the insane enamy except this time it was necrons vs necrons and we just couldnt kill each other lol it was a stalemate for about an hour before i got bored and gave up, was fun though, watching them trying so much was funny although i did lose quite a few men, but thanks to the necron lord and the ressurection orb, i ended up with lots more men than i would have been normally allowed to make so was able to hold the enamy back quite well

You should not need any of the previous games at all, just remember that if you do not get any of the other games and play online though that you won't have access to other races apart from DE and SoB.

And I like to point out that people online don't play anything like the computer, even on insane it'll play in a specific way. You need to play online to really play the game properly. Anyone close to going for that yet?

you dont need the opld ones to play it, its an individual game like dark crusade

I have to say that Online is looking increasingly unlikely for me at the moment. My computer's done well for a few years but it's age is finally starting to show. It's really been struggling with my last few LAN matches so I don't have too much faith in it's ability to do online properly. Hopefully summer will bring a chance to upgrade or buy a new one though, along with Soulstorm!

yeah me neither, i cant really go online with dawn of war right now either, im getting behind on college work right now and need to do it plus im never really in the mood to play games these days, i will do occasionally but not as much as i used to

Got Soulstorm and it's alright, the two new races seem pretty decent although most people online hate anyone playing the SoB because they think they'll use the Req bug. What has pissed me off is that the SM require the Sacred Artifact now to get the Grey Knights which pretty much stops my strategy of getting GK+Chaplain asap. Experimenting with Tau and IG now but I'm someone who isn't the best online early game with them so my win/loss ratio kinda sucks atm.

What sort of problems are you having with the T'au?

I tended to find that Orks give me the most trouble when playing as them, T'au being fragile, and going in where even the buildings are firing at you is a bit of a tough fight.

Guard I have no idea, I still need to try them ( and Orks and Necrons ) out properly.

I am playing the Sisters of Battle in the campaign right now....what req bug are you talking about?

As for the game itself.....a little below my expectations....voices are garbage for the new races, SoB are so weak versus vehicles, the Penitent Engines shouldn't be limited to 2 >_<, and the cannoness should move a little faster :P. The whole air units thingie wasn't necessary....they should have sticked to bringing one new unit type to each race.

Eh....at least it's the same in skirnish....still love to stay one or two hours slaughtering xenos.:neomon:

With the Tau it's trying to come up with a good solid foundation in terms of build order and units to create. Of course every game will play out differently but for the first 5 min I can't think if concentrating on Kroot is the best way to go.

IG just suck and I've only seen a handful of good players online. I used to be pretty decent with them which is why I'm looking into using them again but the lack of decent troops just put me off.

Really the general problem is the start, I can't rush right and struggle against rush tactics.

The Req cheat is when you start to equip your Listening Posts with the Holy Relic then cancel the build, you'll receive an extra 40 Req on top of what you originally spent. Don't know if it works offline.

The aircraft do seem a bit pointless depending on your point of view. I've never really used them to any great extent but when it comes to taking them out I struggle. A Tau player earlier today completely fucked me over rushing me with 4 squads of Firewarriors, Tau Commander and 2 Barracudas and it was those two things that really took me out.

Coupled that one of my teammates pulled out just before the game was about to load meant that we had for our third member a comp player on easy/standard which made for a really one sided, unenjoyable and shit game.

At the very start of the match I've found that a build of Carnivores, Vespids and a Commander is a strong enough one to defend a base and win early scuffles. If you play your cards right ( and the opponent messes up ) you could actually push forward for a victory, but it won't work against every race. Jumping the Vespids into infantry and using their pulse skill ( forget its' name ) has awesome knockback effect. Add to that a Commander who could be in range just enough to start using his flamer then that adds to the breaking effect. If you're against a ranged army at the start then you might want to use Fire Warriors rather than Carnivores, just to give you that extra firepower from afar, covering the Vespids who can do a lot of disruption.

For a build order:
  • Builder makes Barracks and Generator.
  • Build two stealth suits, have them start capturing.
  • Research Jump Packs.
  • From Barracks: Carnivore ( or FW ) squad. And a Commander as soon as the generator is up.
  • From the HQ: Vespids.

It's quite a common build as far as I know, and it's been enough to keep me alive in earlier stages until now. My problem in battles is that I don't have the mental stamina to last if it starts getting drawn out, I start to make some very odd decisions indeed....

i'm planning on getting the new soul storm but right now my computers graphics card wont be able to handle it so im having to wait for a bit but as soon as i have it, im going to use the new armies and see what they are like and then im going to slaughter them with one of the older armies, just to take the piss

Cheers S&S, I'll have another shot with them as some point. Gone back to playing online on Dark Crusade now until the game is patched, just seems a bit unstable and the last few games have pissed me off to no end.

Had a couple of really fun games, one was a 2v2v2v2 game with me and my flatmate teaming up as IG. Was pretty damn good when when two guys as Necron and Chaos (Monolith and Bloodthirster included) were one one side and another IG bombarding us the other. Luckily two Baneblades kinda even the odds in those situations.

Last night one of my teamates lagged out 2 seconds after the start so it was 3v2. Luckily it was on QS (which I personally hate) so I just rushed one of the guys within 10 minutes with ASM, SM and a Force Commander and could have killed him off if one of his servitors didn't escape my grasp. We lost eventually after 35min but it was still pretty good fun.

I'm good with Chaos and Space Marines, but suck with all the others. (I only have the original and the first expansion.)
DoW is so badass, gotta love everything about it, except maybe the music in the first two at least.
Thing is, you have to play a particular way with each faction, and you have to stick to that. With Chaos, the best tactics involve attacking fiercely and quickly, and getting into really intense close combat. Long range defence is hard as Chaos, though. Space Marines are more rounded, but you have to make sure that squads are properly upgraded, etc.
Orks, well, I never got the hang of them; and Eldar are ok, but their armour is paper thin, it's unbelievable. I can play as them, but with some difficulty. Not too bad with imperial guard, but for some reason I find them difficult.

Nevertheless, it's very fun to play.

Dawn of War 2 confirmed. Oh fuck yes.

Details after the link.
