PC Dawn Of War

Oh God...not Blood Ravens again....
There are so many Space Marine chapters out there...why Blood Ravens?
:P
Anyway...the graphics look amazing....I must play this game!

Yeah, I'd read about it but hadn't actually seen the screens yet.

Looks tasty to say the least, can't wait to see what new shizzle Chaos get.:wacky:

The whole 6 squad thing is a bit unclear from what I've heard; firstly as to whether it applies solely to the campaign or also to Skirmish, and does it also mean that we'll one all encompassing limit system for infantry and vehicles?

I can't actually wait for the answers! Damn there being nine months left in 2008...

If I'm right in thinking aren't the Blood Ravens a chapter created by Relic themselves? If so then they'll have greater freedom when it comes to making the story and avoid canon issues and upsetting fans.

The things I like the sound of are that Dreadnaughts can now step on Orks (and whatever other races will appear). The lack of air units is a Godsend, that's still pissing me off online since I don't know how to take them out well with SM beyond the Land Raider and upgraded turrets.

I don't think that the playable races were annoucned but I doubt we'll see all the races first time out.

Played a couple of 2v2v2v2 the last two nights as SM while my flatmate used Eldar, we won the first fine since we teched up quickly but lost last nights game to a Tau/Ork combo. We had the middle of the map secure and one teamed had left/lagged out so we were pushing against the two Dark Eldar players when the Ork with his Squiggoth and Tau with those damn Barracudas and basically everything else they had came up behind us and sandwiched us between the two armies. Couldn't recover quick enough from that and suffered a slow death. Fun though,

the blood ravens are an original warhammer chapter and they are one of the most famous as well, which is why they are used, but i have heard a rumour that there might be a new chapter been added into the new dawn of war 2 that might be coming out sometime this year, i think they said it would be around october time so im gonna keep an eye out for that, as for soulstorm, the new armies arent that inpressive in my opinion, the sisters of battle are just stupid and the new arial units suck, they dont make it that much fun, i preferred it when there werent any because then it could at least be a challenge to some extent on the harder enamies and difficulties but the arial units just take the piss and make it so easy to defend against enamies while you get your army built up so that you can then slaughter enamies.

Although, the graphics are amazingly up to date, they make thegame a bit more bearable, i enjoy playing it JUST because of the graphics and the sounds that the game has in it, the explosions and and enamy blood spraying about is great. Another thing that i like about the new soulstorm is the new campaign layout, where dark crusade had the entire planet you can conquer with 1 of 7 armies, the souldstorm campaign allows you to conquer an entire solar system for 1 of 9 armies, which isnt to bad, it gives the game that edge that wasnt present in dark crusade and it certainly beats having to go through one mission at a time like in dawn of war and winter assault.

You're thinking of the Blood Angels, the Blood Ravens first appeared on DoW.

The campaign mode in SS just bores the hell out me, facing and beating the AI never has the same feeling as beating someone else (I know you can't play online atm). Most of the air units do kinda suck if you don't use them right (Tau's Barracudas still rock imo), I would have preferred they didn't include them though since they just seem like an element that was tacked on.

I don't think the SoB are that bad at all, I think they're better than half the other races, only downside for me is that their Relic weapon is pretty piss-poor compared to most. Dark Eldar on the other hand are pretty damn powerful overall and that DoD is an absolute bitch on your infantry if you're not careful, lost something like 4 FW, 1 Pathfinder and my Tau Commander within a minute one time. ¬¬

i havent had chance to play as the dark eldar yet but they do see ok, will have to try them some time

Infiltrated Mandrakes are really good early on, Scourge Squads are flexible in that they can be upgraded to anti-vehicle, are long-range and probably have best jump in the game. Those bikes they have (Reavers I think) can be used quite early and are very useful. I think they're slightly better earlier in the game than some of the other races but they are a very good race.

Only negative thing I can think of is that their armour may not exactly be as tough as say a Baneblade.

Speaking about relic weapons, what would you rate as the best relic weapon overall?

Finally a very small teaseer and some screens of DoW2 in action.

Nice....now that is a real thunder hammer.:P

Speaking about relic weapons, what would you rate as the best relic weapon overall?

I would say that the Avatar of Khaine(eldar) is the best relic unit. And the lamest/weakest/shittiest is the Greater Knarlok(Tau's big and fluffy dinoasur).;)

Knarloc by itself is pretty poor but if you go down the Kroot path (which I usually do) and just the required upgrade and get the Ethereal then it's armour and health are improved from 8000 and can get up to 11000 which is more than a Baneblade. Sadly you lose the Hammerheads and Crisis Suits but the Krootox and ubered up FW sorta make up for that.

I never looked at the Avatar as that great a unit until I found out from my pal that it increased your Caps which is pretty sweet, some players rarely use it in battle now because of that.

I think that the Baneblade as the worst, it's weaponry just doesn't seem to do as much as I would like or maybe that's just me.

i never play as the tau because they are so annoying, i dont like the kroots and the range attacks a rubbish, so i hate them overall, i play as space marines or chaos on dark crusade, and as far as relic characters go, i prefer the land raider on dark crusade or the monolith from the necrons, they are the best, i waited for ages to see the daemon prince and to be honest i was really disappointed with it, absolutely rubbish in my opinion

Daemon Prince is basically a buffed up Hero unit anyway. Bloodthirster is pretty cool as a Relic weapon although it does have some drawbacks. Not a big fan of Chaos anyway and I'm even put off Space Marines at times. Thinking of going as Imperials when I can start playing again.

i didnt really like the imperials when i played hem but they can be pretty good people when you ally with them and then they can be pretty annoying enamies aswell because they come at you in large numbers and they can produce more really quickly so it keeps you going, as for chaos, i like playing as them in the campaign but on skirmish they are just push overs, i havent played as them online yet as i cant at the moment :( but i will have to get online some time to try them against other people

The problem with Imps is that they aren't the most durable of races and you basically have to swarm them like you would with the Orks. The Kasrkin squads, Orgyns, Heavy weapons and vehicles they have are pretty damn sweet. They can be good if you use them right but you'll always be at a disadvantage compared to other races.

As I've said before when you play online it's completely different. Not to say that everyone is good at the game but you won't get away with half of what you use against the computer. I've been on the end of many a beating because of this.

It's amazing how much harder the Dark Eldar become when they don't spam buildings. :p

I've been on the receiving end of many a Hellion rush, and it's not fun, Tau seem to get cut to pieces quite bad by them. Chaos handled it slightly better but I still get outmanouvred most times, can't help it, I'm an RTS novice at best.:wacky: I just feel the Dark Eldar are a bit more interesting to play as when you try and avoid a vehicle/Hellion rush at the start.

But yeah, has anyone had any succesful experience of using T'au against Orks? That's my big hurdle at the moment, my tactics definitely need some tweaking to deal with the big green 'uns.

Not the best to ask about online 1v1 games since I never play them apart from one time with a pal. However the best will probably be to have the TC and 2/3 FW squads (and one kroot if you have the req handy) and have the TC lay a snare both away from you and another under your FW in case you have to retreat and you'll be able to slow the Slugga Boys or if a Big Mek teleports amongst the squad where you can then retreat back and put them under fire. Having a FW squad hanging further back to give covering fire would be handy too.

Also another thing is you can move the squad that is being targeted and have the rest shoot them while the enemy is giving chase.

if you play as space marines (my fav army apart from necrons) i like to use a combo of a whirlwind, three assault squads and four squads of marines, it is useful to kit out the marines with three heavy bolters and two rocket launchers, the assualt squads will go into the dirty fighting with the enamy, the whirlwind will flatten the enamy from a distance and the marines can just keep the enamy at bay and can possibly kill quite a few as well, works every time

I have heard about this game I hear it's pretty good. I don't think it sounds good though. But some of my friends play so I guess it won't be as bad if i play it. I'm thinking of playing it.

It's not the most balanced RTS of all time but it's probably the most fun one I've ever played myself. With a selection of 9 races you have a reasonable amount of choice when you consider several of the races are similar to each other and since it's based on the 40K Universe it has a certain amount of appeal that others don't. Since you have friends that have it you can just play their copies to see if it's what you want.

I don't think I've ever used the Whirlwind tank beyond the Single-Player campaign. The amount of cap and the fact that you can only have one just doesn't strike me as a particulary good option when compared to other vehicles. I wasn't too smart at using Assualt Marines either and stupidly rely way too much on Heavy Bolter Marines which later in the game kinda fails.

My strat on team games until SS ruined it was teching fast to Grey Knights and Chaplain for the early stages and tech up onto Terms, Land Raider and other later units if possible. Never really settled on a decent strat these days although this weekend I'm going back to Imperials since I hate want to main with them again.

I've just recently got into playing it. I bought The Complete Collection a while ago, but I'm only up to the fourth mission of the original game so I haven't even looked at any of the expansion packs yet. It's a bit difficult getting used to it compared to other RTS' with all the advanced controls regarding the camera. Definitely £25 well spent though.

i really need to buy the new one, soulstorm, does anyone know whether it runs on vista or not?
