Fan Fiction Fellow Writers - Come Chat!

I have a question concerning names, it is okay for me to use real peoples names even if I just take apart someone else's name and create a new name altogether? Is okay to use names of family members?

Do you mean for an original piece or original characters in a fan fiction? Either way, I don't see how taking the name of someone you know could hurt. It's not as though your audience will know what you've done, nor should they have any qualms with it for that matter. I do it myself sometimes, and I'm sure a good number of writers out there have as well. :3

As long as the person isn't someone real, yes. You can base a character on someone you know, just as long as it isn't completely like them.

I usually struggle with character and place names. I don't see a problem in the method you mentioned though, sounds like a good idea.
I usually just use a name generator, a random name or a name I see on a game from minor characters.

Personally, I use random names for characters. Faith Crest was a random name when I created her three years ago. And as for places, I put awkward letters together, such as Zildaan, Faith's home planet.

People won't know where you got the name for your character from, so long as their personalities aren't the same. Although I guess with more rare names, it is more obvious anyways. I'd like to think that the names you give people should be symbolic. Not that people would pick up on that.

Only those who take extreme note of these things would pick these things up. I consider myself one of those people in some cases, depends on if I'm concentrating when I'm reading.

I think it depends on whether you're looking for these symbols when reading. When I'm reading for my own pleasure then I hardly ever pick up on them unless they're obvious. However in English class when I'm looking for them I find it fairly easy.

I think I'm going to start writing a story here, about a teenager in the war in Iraq. I don't plan on having a lot of violence in it. What I want is for long detailed posts about what he experiences, then one or two shorter posts about any enemy encounters, then back to the things he experiences and how he feels about everything.

Would anybody be interested in reading it so I know whether or not to start writing?

And I know about the whole, "Write for yourself" thing, but I do like writing stories directed toward others' tastes and if I have no audience, then there's nothing for me to work toward.

Okay, to avoid further confusion, i'm going to wait until I've finished DoD before I write another chapter for Heroes

Alright, I've started a new FF9 fanfic. The only problem being that I really REALLY suck at portraying Beatrix. Anyone got any tips for a noob such as meself? I mean, I tend to portray her as military like and bossy. However I don't know how to portray her gentler side, like when she's with the Princess or her Loyal Sir Rustalot. And I'm not sure what sort of language should I use for her. Should I go for FFT WOTL style? Of should I make her just imformal, but using modern language.

Mingchan OOOOOUUUUUuuuuutttt!!! :jon:

Maybe you could try finding a script (or something of the like) for the game, read through her parts and take note as to how she speaks/moves, what kind of language she uses, etc. If you can't find anything written, you can always look for FMVs and watch those, which, I think, might be easier as it would be playing out in front of you.

Hey I've posted a piece of writing as I do heaps in my spare time.

Its called Learning the Trades, the prologue explains the basics. I would like if you read it and I don't mind comments as I don't get many on my writing normally.

Hey there people! Because my laptop is currently in the shop and has no set date for being fixed yet, I decided to write a new story called Lamia Of Fortuna (10 Bonus points if anyone can figure out what that means :D ) I am also making ideas for the next DoD but until my laptop is finished I cant finish the current DoD :(

I got to ask this what if you get stuck on a word while you are trying to write your sentence.

You could probably ask here, or you could look it up with dictionary.com. Sometimes, when it seems hopeless I'll completely reword the sentence, or even paragraph.

I'm looking for some assistance.

I wrote some character prose, though they are very breif (less than a page, mostly) and I'm not sure if they are even considered "Fan Fiction." I really enjoyed writing them and would like to write more... however, I'm too scared to post them.

Does anyone have any advice on posting this sort of thing?

Well, if you expect the worst, then you're guranteed not to be let down. =P

If you're just worried about letting everyone see them, then you could send them in an email to me or something, if you don't mind, and I'd be fine with giving an honest answer, or a sheltered one. Realistically, the worst that could happen should you post them up ehre anyway is constructive criticism, or lack of attention; which is what these forums suffer from the most. If you get any response (which you would, 'cause I'm willing to give it a look) then I'd say that you're doing better off than others already.

Awesome, thank you! I'll PM one of them to you. I've got an affiliation for darker stuff, so I apologize if you aren’t into that sort of thing. A warning, the one I'm sending has small amount of gore.

I'm looking for an honest review-- since I feel that critique is necessary for development. I've got several of these and if you enjoy this one, I'd be happy to send you more.

I don't know what I'm worried about, really. Just nervous I guess.
