FF7 - over-rated or under-rated?

More of the truth right here. I'm sick of hearing about it. It's like a good friend telling you that the pizza at this place is the greatest pizza is the best. You have some, and state that the pizza is pretty awesome, but you've had better, and your friend continues to rant and rave about his damned pizza.

Bottom line here, I like FFVII, I believe it's overrated because of it's (mostly idiotic) fanbase. The spinoffs and fan service of the game just confirms it.

(Sorry about the multi colored post, I'm not quite sure what happened. However, I'm color blind so I can hardly tell. So ha.)

Lol a pizza wouldn't be as special or have as much of an impact on you as a brilliant game (unless you really love your pizza's). :P Yeah it's only a game still but it does give you hours of entertainment and good memories. It's also considered by the majority of gamers to be one of the best games ever made. If you go on gaming websites and forums of course your going to encounter the fans who rant and rave about it. I don't understand why some gamers are so frustrated with FF7's fan base. If you truely loved video gaming then you should understand why people like it so much. I think it's great it's gotten as popular as it has, I don't know many people who are that interested in RPG games.

Yes, I love pizza, the only food that can beat it is General Tao's Chicken. The ranting and raving that I'm talking about is on other forums. Imagine if myself and 4 other were having a discussion on FFIX. Then out of nowhere someone comes in with a random Cloud comment and derails the thread when 5 other morons show up talking about how awesome FFVII was.

Seriously, it annoys me. I understand why they like it, however, I can't understand why the can't get over it. Sure, it's good, sure, it has a few good moments to remember, however, it doesn't have to stink up every FF conversation ever. It's isn't the god of RPG's, it doesn't smile sunshine and poo rainbows, and it can't make me General Tao's Chicken.

Yeah don't we all love pizza and chicken. :p

I know what you mean there seems to be a lot of fan-bots saying the same thing over and over. It's not like it's the only FF worth talking about, the others are all brilliant as well. It doesn't matter which one is the best anyway.

@Tsukianei: I understand your frustration with some people who think it's the best thing ever and won't shut up about it, but in the end, what can you do about it? Rant? There are people who think it's the worst thing ever and won't shut up about it, you know. There are also people who hate the VII fanbase and won't shut up about it, as there are VII fans who hate the haters and won't shut up about it. I see a cycle here.

For every ranter that stops ranting, 2 more take there place. So in the end, what would come of my ranting? Twice as more ranters? Seeing the cycle means nothing. Let the ranters rant and the fanboys totally ****ride the game. Nothing is going to chance, even if you blatantly point out the obvious. Is this supposed to point out a scrap of clarity in an otherwise chaotic situation?

Nope, I think not.

To me, it's over-rated, the problem being, FFVII is essentially a victim of it's own success. Of course it terms of sales and such like it couldn't have been better for Square, however, because they've acted upon that by squeezing every little drop out of FFVII as possible, it's pissed people off - plus, it's created a mass of fanboys.

Had Square left it as it was, it wouldn't have been as bad. I can understand the spinoffs, and the PSN release as a lot of series have done that, but every games conference nowadays SquareEnix manage to fit in FFVII in there somewhere, and it's become extremely bland, irratating and unneccessary. As for the game itself, at the time of release it was groundbreaking, and overall it is a good game, however, I don't personally think it was some sort of masterpiece and probably doesn't deserve as much attention and whoring as it gets.

Final Fantasy 7 is a great game, that's all there is to it. People just tend to hate the mainstream. With that said I'd say that there is a such thing as overrating a game. I believe FF7 is one of the best games I've ever played, is that over rating it? I don't think so but there is the possibility to get a little overzealous. Saying something silly like "Those are the best graphics ever!" would be a prime example of a fan getting a little over zealous but it truly is a good game.

All in all, people definitely need to give it more of a chance and at least 30 hours of their lives and try it out ;D

My point is, everyone complains about someone else, and the whole mess is stupid. Is that 'clarity'? Yes it is. This 'A-hates-B-who-hates-A' cycle isn't chaotic, it's moronic. And what's with the 'let fanboys do what they want so I have an excuse to rant' line?

Things can theoretically change, but it requires that the haters and the fanboys and the cynics all stop to smell the roses and not be close-minded to differing opinions, which may as well be impossible. Until then I'll stick with the opinion that VII is overrated and under-appreciated*.

TL;DR - you have a right to rant, rave, and sneer, and I have just as much right to suggest you stop ranting and do something else.

*by that I mean some fans love it despite never having played the game, such as a few of my friends - they love Cloud to death despite not knowing his background or his motives or anything about him except that 'he's hot'. Over-rated yet under-appreciated. Another example being people who have never played the game being turned off from it because of fanboys, or people who hate fanboys to the point of degrading the game to tick them off. And yeah, it rhymes and sounds corny.

I'm going to ask that this thread get back on topic now. I'd appreciate the insults and rude comments to stop now as it brings unnecessary controversy to the board that we just do not need. Also, no flaming is allowed. It will earn you an instant infraction and possibly a trip to the prison. If you fail to comply with this request you will be punished accordingly. Thank you and carry on.

...rantMON.

What do you say. Over-rated or under-rated?

Its popular not over-rated, I don't think its underrated but it certainly isn't OVER rated, just because a video game is popular it isn't automatically Over-Rated.

Now overated is Twilight, people may still personally find it interesting but there really is nothing to it but A lovers obsession to the unrequited love.

I think FFVII is being milked every mile though and that isn't the same as over-rated there's everything to like about it, its character body was very original til rip offs started to well...rip it off.

So my answer to this question is No it is NOT an Over-rated game :notfunny:

Are you kidding me? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The games are still on the lists, I see them all the time. Check Gamefaqs every year when they have the Character Battle voting spree. Guess what game is always up there because stupid fans can't stop ****riding it? You're quote inspires me to say many atrocities to your name, but I'm in somewhat of a good mood.

I don't hate the game, sure I may not think it's the greatest thing since air, but I like it. It's the fanbase I hate. Like you.
Final Fantasy VII makes those lists for a reason, Tsukianei. You are obviously someone who:
a. Has not played Final Fantasy VII
b. Played Final Fantasy VII for the sake of being able to point out its flaws
c. Didn't play Final Fantasy VII when it first came out
d. Both b and c

Most likely, I think you are either c or d.

Final Fantasy VII was entirely epic for its time, and its effect on the gaming community has not been copied since. You've probably played the game recently and looked for what made the game epic and were disappointed. This is because you didn't play the game in its original era. The game cannot compare to games nowadays because obviously the ones nowadays have gorgeous graphics and a reference like Final Fantasy VII to use. I realize it isn't your fault that you didn't get to play the game in its original form, but please refrain from assuming you know the effect the game had on the gaming community during its time. It's the lasting legacy of Final Fantasy VII that keeps it on the top ten lists. Obviously VII doesn't compare to games like Halo 3, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, and Final Fantasy X/XII because those games came later and were judged by different criteria. Final Fantasy VII was epic, enriching, and graphically spectacular at the time it was made. Even though it can't compare now, it still makes those lists because of how great it was during it's time, not how it holds up now. Understand that by playing the game recently the game won't have the same effect on you as it did on people in 1991. Hopefully you take my post into consideration and refrain from making rude, obnoxious comments about me because I am a fan of Final Fantasy VII.

Intially, when I first purchased this game back when it first came out, I enjoyed it. It had a message that I could sympathize with, a battle system that takes from its predecessors and finds a way to innovate it further, and a wide range of characters who each make at least some contribution to the story as a whole.

But then, as time went on, it warped and twisted into a ravening beast, spawning forth more and more foul creations. The original game has a decent amount of things I could nit-pick or point out, but these never detract enough from the overall experience to lessen the significance and impact it had on the rest of the series. Final Fantasy VII is hardly the pioneering or innovating game it was before. Now it is simply a constant retreading or rehashing of the exact same thing over and over again, for the sole purpose of simply making more money off of the ever-popular series. Not to say that SquareEnix has no right to attempt to make money off of a game that many people love, but in cases like Advent Children, there hardly seems to be any real effort into making anything FFVII-related at all. They just have to throw in Cloud being all brooding and distant, and have an Epic Duel between Sephiroth and Cloud, and people will flock to it.

Something I have never liked is when someone simply likes something because others do, or because of a reason that has little to do with what the object of their affection was created for. People liking Cloud or Sephiroth, not because of their motives, depth, or character, but because they both wield overcompensating swords and can be said to be physically attractive, aggravates me to no end. I have no problem at all with that being -part- of the reason, it is human nature to like something that they find attractive, but to have that as the -sole- reason to make something so huge, so all-consuming, is what really provokes me into murderous rage.

Originally, much of my dislike for the game came from the fact that it utterly eclipsed every other game in the series. When you say Final Fantasy, the first thing people usually think of would either be Cloud or Sephiroth. And how could they not? These characters have been made so iconic that most people are hardly aware that the other games exist, let alone want to even give them a try. I am quite aware that SquareEnix has made remakes for pretty much every classical Final Fantasy game for at least two or three platforms, but I still hardly ever see FFI-FFVI get receive even a fraction of the amount of reverence and gratification that FFVII recieves on a daily basis. Indeed, FFI was essentially Dungeons and Dragons, modified a bit to make it more suitable on the console, and I know that next to VII, VI gets quite a fair share of fans who are just as dedicated about how that is the greatest entry in the series. I no longer compare this game to the others, for each are great in their own way, although in a slightly hypocritical statement, I only wish that the other games got as much recognition as FFVII still does. I would not want any of them to become as warped and twisted as certain sections of FFVII lore has become, but I still think they deserve something other than yet another remake.

Now, it is not my intent to sound negative merely for the sake of being negative, or just saying these things in some feeble attempt to set myself apart from the mainstream. FFVII was indeed a fantastic game, and truly opened up the series to the general public. As some have stated, even people who do not care for, or are aware of much of the Final Fantasy series as a whole, tend to be fans of, or really liked FFVII. It drew attention to the series, and the fact that it stands out certainly shows that it did quite a few things right.

What is overrated is the FFVII -franchise-. The game itself most certainly is not underrated. It is always being showered with praise, and something that is underrated tends to not have such a massive popularity. But the game itself is not overrated either, since much of the positive commentary is quite true. What it has become at this point, however, is an easy way to make some quick cash, and in a way, that tarnishes everything the game stood for. Slap the name FFVII onto just about any game, and you are guaranteed to sell millions of copies due to the massive fan-base, whether or not the game is of high-quality. Not that FFVII is the only game that employs this kind of tactic, but the fact that it has succumbed to this saddens me. When something so great can be deformed so much that it is little more than a Plan B to shut people up and hold over the crowds for a while, it becomes clear that some masterpieces are better left untouched.

...And, well, that's my excessively long-winded two bits.

I agree with Ultros, the franchise is overrated.

VII, in it's own right is a great game. The experience is what you make it. You go in looking for flaws and reasons not to like it, then no doubt you will find them.

Though for sure the franchise has one to many side stories. A lot of this effort to work on VII "peripherals" could go towards new role playing material.

That's really the extent of my opinion, the subject is a bit tired. The materia system to me is dreadful though...

I will not be making rude comments about you because of your personal preference. I actually don't do that all too much. However, I will make a rude comment for assuming that I haven't played the game when it first came out. I did, in fact, I got it the day that it came out. Believe it or not.

You see, it's rude, and ignorant (apologies if that is an insult to you) to assume that one hasn't played a game in the correct era, or whatever. Your point, how little it is, isn't very valid. Your assumption is based off of next to nothing.

Even when I sat down and played that game, I believed it to be average, it didn't have an impact on me what so ever. I did say that it was a good game, I never once said that it sucked, but it was just average. (And if I have ever said that it sucked, I was getting angry at self-righteous fanboys such as yourself.) The game at the time (or in the era as you like to put it) just didn't appeal to me all that much.

Also, do not assume that I do not know that I don't know the effect that it had on the community. I had friends that loved it, and talked about it for years after they had beaten it. I know, and I know well. I can still remember the arguments we had gotten in just because I said, "Dude, it's not all that great."

While you make your assumptions I can live in the comfort of knowing that everyone you have made is wrong. In the future, before you start making assumptions as self-righteous, self-serving, monolithic, and monumental as that, I would advise you to actually get to know the person that you are making assumptions about. That's how rumors are started, and how enemies are made.

I do apologize if this came off rude, or disrespectful. However, be aware just how rude and disrespectful your entire post came out.

Read the bold. You just did. I'd like to point out that you also said that you hate me, and that you'd like to say many atrocities to my name. You were judgmental of me from the very beginning, and it was you that replied in such a manner, not me. I assumed you had not played the game in it's own time because of the way you speak about it. For its time, the graphics, gameplay, story, and whatever else, were epic. You can deny that, I suppose, but it doesn't make it true. Reviews, Top 10 Lists, and a dedicated fanbase are my evidence supporting this. Where's your evidence?

Congrats on blowing my entire post out of context. Sure, the graphics were good for it's time. I'd be a fool to deny that. However, that's where it stops. In my honest opinion, only in graphics did that game set a bar. You can deny that as well, however, it's an opinion, like my own, in your own words, "it doesn't make it right".

Sure, I was judgmental, but I wasn't rude in any aspect. If I said something that you thought was rude, too bad. I called you a self-righteous fanboy because that's exactly what you're acting like.

However, your entire post (original post) was condescending, rude, and choc-full of assumptions.

Final Fantasy VII makes those lists for a reason, Tsukianei. You are obviously someone who:

An assumption like that is rude no matter where it comes from.

I'd like to point out that you also said that you hate me
I did not state that I hate you. To be honest you're not worth hating. (Rude I know, but the truth.) If you mean this:

That's how rumors are started, and how enemies are made.
If that's your evidence on stating I hated you, you really need to get over yourself. That was advise, most people would take your post to much more offense than I did.

and that you'd like to say many atrocities to my name.
I'd like to? Oh no good Sir, I believe that I did. I called you self-serving (which I believe that your post is), self-righteous (which is exactly what your posts are) and your post was indeed a monolithic and monumental assumption/accusation on my character.

However, once again I have been involved in the derailment of this thread, and for that I do apologize to both the community and the mods and all those other wonderful people that I don't care about. If anyone else would like to rebuttal my argument, assault my character, or turn this debate into another ad hominem of assaults, that's is what the PM function is for. Thank you, and good night.

Alright, can we cease the argument please before the thread gets derailed?

If you're that inclined to go tooth and claw at each other, do so in PM.

Hahaha. Ah, well you obviously aren't worth arguing with, since you're denying that you said that you hate me, even when you said, and I quote, "I don't hate the game, sure I may not think it's the greatest thing since air, but I like it. It's the fanbase I hate. Like you." You hate the fans of VII, like me. You weren't rude? Hahaha. Okay.

Anyway, VII is hated on too much by people who seem to think they need to hate it. Or, is it really the game itself that's hated, or the fanbase? Either way, there seems to be a hatred for fans of VII like there's a hatred for fans of Twilight. Which, frankly, I don't get. Just because VII is popular doesn't give you a reason to hate it, or its fanbase. Go play your own favorite and stop picking at VII.

The major issue arises when certain members of VII's fanbase go out of their way to insult FF I-VI and act like the series was never any good until VII came out.

The problem is that these fans tend to be the most vocal, and cause people to view VII in a negative light.

FF VII on its own is a fantastic game that deserves its place as one of the best games in the series. I would say that most of the hatred stems from overzealous fans that are convinced that anything not marked FF VII and starring Cloud is automatically an inferior game.

I have no issues with fans of VII, but it gets annoying seeing hardcore fans of that game mocking FF I-VI when most them have never touched those games. The issue with that logic is that games like I, III, IV, and VI have contributed alot to the overall series, but their accomplishments tend to get ignored by fans who think VII is the only important game in the franchise.

Way to take something so personally. Sure, I totally said that, because it's true. However, what I should have said is that I hate most of its fanbase. But if your going to take something like that so personally, you're just being childish. In fact, you're not just being childish, you are childish. However, that post was a long time ago, and I had forgotten about it. Now that I went back and read that post, I don't take anything that I said back. You're acting like an idiot, so I hate you.

The whole "hahaha" think you're doing is the definition on childish.

Anywho, back on topic. It seems you haven't read my posts. I've stated that I actually don't hate the game. I like it, but it's not something that I would rave on and on about. I just view it as average. What can't you get about that?

Just because VII is popular doesn't give you a reason to hate it, or its fanbase.
As stated before, I don't hate the game because it's popular. I hate it because it has been taken a little too far by fanboys such as yourself. It has a movie sequel (which I believe it deserved) then two other games (which in my opinion was taking it too far). With every game that came out, fanboys seemed to rave all about it twice as hard as they did when the first FFVII came out over 10 years ago.

The fanboys that I hate are the ones that blindly "white knight" the game and the reply by attack the person saying something about it, or bringing up illogical points in an argument. (Which just makes me hate most of the fanbase more.)

Go play your own favorite and stop picking at VII.

So I'm not allowed to voice my opinion anymore? You're being a little too childish at this point. Grow up and learn that some people can actually have a different opinion than yours. Also, if you honestly think that I'm "picking" on FFVII, you should sit and wait until I start opening up at FFX. A game that I absolutely hate with a passion.

Now, I suggest that both of us take this argument to PM before the mods get fed up with the both of us. When you're feeling a little more mature, please don't hesitate to PM me with your rebuttal.
