FF7 - over-rated or under-rated?

Exactly. VII is most likely a lot of people's first Final Fantasy game and people fell in love with it because it was a great game for it's time. Then VIII came out with the similar futurific theme. Then IX comes out and it goes back to the classical medieval theme that the ps1 generation isn't used to. People also aren't used to the happy, cartoonish art of IX either. The ps1 generation grew up with the emotional Cloud and Squall. Not the happy, cocky and upbeat Zidane. So a lot of these guys chose not to even play IX. This wasn't the only reason why IX was so underrated. IX came out right before the release of the PS2 and one of the first games out for PS2 was none other than FFX. So people bought the PS2 and ignored the FFIX and just decided to play X. And with all the advertisement and attention X was getting, X became the PS2 version of FFVII. I won't say X was overrated because X actually lived up to its hype. Good music, Great story. All the characters had their part in the story. So I believe X wasn't overrated but it wasn't underrated either. These are the reasons why you see VII and X (and a good amount of VIII) merchandises everywhere while IX was heavily ignored. I mean, seriously. You go to anime conventions and there are at least 59135913581 people dressed as Cloud or Vincent. You play Kingdom Hearts and you see characters like Cloud, Aeries, Yuffie, Cid, Squall, Seifer, Wakka, Selphie, Tidus, Auron, oh and Sephiroth's overrated ass WOULD be there also...in both games. While the only character from IX to make it to Kingdom Hearts was Vivi. You go on replica sword websites and you'll see Cloud's Buster Sword, Squall and Seifer's gunblades, Tidus's water sword, and even Auron's sword. I would have loved to see Zidane's double edge sword there, but wait...Zidane's from IX. I'm surprised they included IX characters in Dissidia. I mean, thanks for not COMPLETELY excluding IX. But of course in the trailers, I would know that the figure that came out of that volcano would be Sephiroth before his image is shown. I'm sorry but...VII is just so overrated.

i agree, in my childhood it was an incredibly hard game, but playing through it again with my sister, i don't even have to strategize most of the time. i defeated the red dragon at the temple of the ancients with one meteorain, my opening move.

i'm glad someone else can see the POV i have on its popularity; that it's put on a pedestal as some god for fanboys while trampled upon as a pile of crap by other fanboys. not that other games aren't the same situation, but FFVII is the most popular of the PSX era, making its fanboy/hater base larger than most.

I havent lost in any FF game since I rediscovered them last year. I've played VI,VII,VIII, and IX. They are all VERY easy games if you take even a small amount of time to learn how to prepare for battle properly. Every game that get's huge will have fan boys and haters. That happens with anything that gains popularity. That's when something has become an icon in it's industry.

This is actually one of my biggest problems with FF. They should have difficulty settings on the newer ones. That way if it's too easy I can make it harder and the bad guys will jump up a few levels. I may make a thread about them being too easy at some point.

Final Fantasy VII is a great game and set up an era of FF growth that was nice, but I am gonna say it is over-rated. It also seems to me that both VIII and IX are under-rate because VII is so over-rated. It's like it cast a big shadow over all future titles because it ushered in the beginning of a format that would boost the FF series. Once again, I say this as a person who loves FFVII, I'm just so sick of hearing the crazed lovers of it babble on about how great it is, ruins it for me a bit. It's just too much. I also dislike that the FFs aren't connected but are still compared as though you have to like only one out of the series. VIII is my favorite, but like I said I love VII, IX, X, and X-2(hate XII). They stand alone, so judge them in that standard. As for Zelda, I never really got into it but from what I did play I'd choose FFVII anyday. Zelda did seem fun though.

I would not say its breath-taking, however most of my friends will tell you there's no other game like it. I do think that VIII is much better, but VII comes in right behind

I think FFVII was the best of the games, like all of the compilation together. It has the thickest plot, all these years before FFVII and after. FFVII is a mixture between the futuristic style (sector 7, the guns, clothes etc.) and the medieval "fantasy" culture (Cloud left Nibelheim when he was 14, magic, cait sith and nanaki...) .
But I will not say that the next games aren't great. I loved FFVIII, however not as much as FFVII (meeehhh, love stuff and that, not my interests). In FFVII there was tiny little bit about love, but it wasn't the main point.
But I must say that FFX was a great game aswell, but I thought it looked a bit more silly with all those costumes (but the plot was great aswell as gameplay, I really enjoyed playing it).
FFIX was hilarious. I loved it so much. I just felt this special environment that made me love that game. Don't ask me questions about this, I just felt it.
I can of course say some bad things about FFVII, mostly about Cloud's and Tifa's appearance. Cloud had those pop-eye arms that just freak me out, and Tifa with her short skirt - ugh.

But there most be a reason why FFVII cast a shadow on all the other games. I liked all of the other games, but I still must say that FFVII was my favourite. My little brother even asked me to buy that game for him on PSN, so I did (well, I love my brother ^^) and without me saying anything about the game, he said that he liked it (although he mentioned Cloud's pop-eye arms aswell, and his over-usage of hairgel xD)

I played through this for the second time a few months ago... mehhh. Had to force myself to keep playing about 10 hours in. Nowhere near as spectacular as people make out. It's not even one of the best FF games let alone best game ever made. Don't get me wrong it's a good game but extremely overrated. I thought Advent Children was quite bad also. If I had watched that before I completed the game I'd have never wanted to play it in the first place.

*grabs shield*

Indeed I tried to replay it, when I got to disc 3 I simply stopped, its overrated.

Hm, I believe FF7 is under-and overated, because fanatics often call it the best game of all time which it isnt, although it definitely is a masterpiece and haters call it crap so its underrated,

Even Adam and Morgan from X-Play can agree that VII is one of the best games ever. That is, before rabids and SE started milking the heck out of it. Therefor ruining the game itself.

However, I do feel the game is both underrated and overrated. Underrated because of the rabid haters. And overrated because of the rabid fans who think the newer installments are great and make the originally game better... When they don't.

I think the game has been under rated for what it acomplished, it drilled the future of the ffs into stone and because of the way this game took off they decided to continue the series instead of it being a final final fantasy game. But concidering how the graphics are people nowadays or younguns as i should say turn there nose up at this game and choose the newer releases because of the way the graphics are.

Instead of giving it a go they see no voice active, small chibi form characters along the screen and the actual environment being very under developed. Which it is NOW but when it was released it was the best game out there and the graphics also seemed the best. Back then the hype was amazing for the game but now because of what i stated people avoid it.

Yet if we noticed when crisis core was brought out and advent children a lot more people joined the fanbase and a lot of them even went and played the origonal game.

I think if they did decide to make this game again with modern graphics then it would simply be amazing and it would increase the fanbase of this game but in my own personal oppinion this game is not broken so why fix it. The storyline is what matters to a game not the graphics, some of the best, if not the best rpgs have these similar graphics. XD

It's funny how you bring up most Zelda fan hating FFVII. Some Zelda fantard on another forum I go to, hates my avatar because it from FF7. Of course being one of my favorite games, I had to say soming in defence. Here's what she said about the game and quote...
Icecreamlink: "FF VII has haunted me ever since I played it....o_O "
Of course I had to intervene by saying...
Me:"FF7 was pure epic win. The storyline made me laugh and cry."
(Rofl *looks down*)
Icecreamlink: "no it wasn't...it's an over rated, too broken, god awful game...and there was nothing in the story that made me cry...there was just a stupid pretty spiky hair cry baby that is weak...."
Me: "Have you ever actually PLAYED the game, if so you must not like JRPGs very much. There's nothing broken about the gameplay. All in all, it was very well crafted for being the first FF 3D PS1 game. The only thing didn't agree with is the fact that you could attack your own party members and heal enemys, but if you know what your doing your fine. If you've actually played though the WHOLE PS1 game, and played Crisis core. Then I could understand why you hate it so much. I don't think you have though, to be honest. Out of all the FF games FF7 had the best storyline, besides a few others. I think newer FF suck in comparison. You think FF7 is overrated, FF10 and 8 are just as bad. I use to hate FF7, BEFORE I actually played it. That's why I'm not buying your 'I think its a god awful game'. Your not elaborating why you hate the game, beside saying you hate Cloud."
Icecreamlink: "if I hadn't played it,I wouldn't say that now would I?
and yes It is broken...
have you tried the level one Tifa (or other characters?)against the emerald weapon?
I tried it..it 's easy to beat him...(all the weapons are easy to beat)and your wrong..I like RPG's a lot..you just don't know that...and I don't want to say anything about the story because it's a spoiler...oh and it's not a good thing to get angry over an opinion...an the laughter..."
(She clearly has problems with grammar and spelling. Which made it harder for me to understand her.)
Me:My oh my... Look, I don't know where you trying to get at with the Emerald wepon, but since when is the gameplay solely based on the weapon battles. Those battles are actually really hard. Some some boss battles are hard, some arnt. That dosn't mean the gameplay is broken. Like every JRPG, the point of the gameplay is to fight tons of battles, get to extremely high levels, use items and materia to increase your strength, and kick everyones asses in the game. The gameplay is just is like any other JRPG. There are no real major flaws in the gameplay, or it would be unplayable. Obiously, if you can beat the game, like thousands or other ppl have, you'll find it has average gameplay and nothing really wrong with it. Like all the other FF games before and after it. Your statement is groundless. I dare you to go to a Final Fantasy forum and tell them what you told me, and I assure you, you'll get your chewed out about how wrong you are. LOLZ.
Icecreamlink:are you stupid?
of course i'll get my ass kicked!by stupid FF VII fan girls and boys!!but on reality,I kicked theirs at the end......loland okay I will go to an FF forums..lol(it's a good thing I joined toe of them already!)
and I said before, wasting your anger on a stupid commentlol the joy and laughter......
Zack was a soldier until he died...(and Cloud was there too..)and Zack's girlfriend was Arieth(Aries by error of translating)and she also died..."
Me:You spelled "Aerith's" name wrong, and it was "Aeris" due to transulation errors. The the name Aeris and Aerith doesn't come from Aeries, because Square ment for the name Aerith to be a near-anagram for "Earth".
Oh and down-rating my avatar even more everytime you post, REAL clever or should I say real mature. And anyone can tell you Zack and Aerith died, but do you know how and why? Hm?
Oh, and if you actually played FF7 with just skimming through it, you would know Cloud is just an "I'm better than eveyone" asshole in the first game. He doen't become an emo kid untill after FF7, in Advent Children. Plz, get your facts straight. :] Thanks, and again I've got nothing against beside this FF subject."
Icecreamlink:lol..then why are you keep on posting this stuff?oh and you know because you an all FF fan!(and great job on correcting me..it was just a test!)
and I like FF classics better..that's all and i'm going to say it again...
I'm not posting more because it will be a spoiler...."
Me:You make me lol, you know that. Your not spoiling anything for anyone my talking about it. Either the pplz here have played it or they haven't. Just face it, you know little to nothing about FF7.
Oh, you can't get out of not know Aerith's name by lying like that. I'm not buying it. So far in every post you've posted, hardly anything you've said about that game has been accurate. Your clearly not backing up your broken statements. I've stated more facts about the game in one post more than you have since you've started posting about FF7.

FF7 IS a classic, just like all the other games for the PS1, 64, and every other console before them. Why are you complaining about the gameplay if you like the FF classics? The gameplay is the very same in the older games too. Haha, your just hating on the game just because. That's weak. Srsly."
Icecreanlink: "lol that your choice then....I really don't like to be a spoiler.....
(how many times am I going to tell you this?)and you make me lol a lot too...I'm not a FF VII freak fan....I'm a huge insane Toon Link fan.....
and your right..I haven't played it in a long time......so I don't remember much..and sephiroth is not much of an evil person either..oh wow...he killed a little of people..and burned a town down...(weak)
oh and no it's not...SNES and below are the classics ones....."

I just quit after that. There was no point in bothering. Yes, I am very opinionated about games I like and don't. Normally I don't care if some hates game I like, but to insult the gameplay when there isn't really anything wrong with it... *sigh* To awnser your question about the game being over-rated, in terms of being a FF yes, it is over-rated. As a video game in general, its pretty popular. I wouldn't go as far as to say over-rated though. That's just my opinion though.

Now, VII is not and will never be my favourite Final Fantasy, but I do think it is underrated. I love it, but for me it can never beat VIII, which has always been my favourite. I wouldn't say it is overrated at all, I very rarely see people proclaim that 'it is the best game ever', although I know some people that would say it is their favourite game. It gets underrated because of the graphics sometimes, but for me graphics really doesn't matter... I mean, I prefer PS1 games to PS2 games overall because it seems that since the PS2s have come out, companies have spent more time developing nice graphics and less time thinking up interesting storylines.

As for the spinoffs, I think they are underrated personally. A lot of the original fanbase dislike them but I love them (apart from Before Crisis, seriously, a mobile phone FF?) and I don't think they're half as bad as what some people say.

It all comes down to opinion, really, and for me it is one of my favourite all-time games, behind FF VIII. It also depends on what sort of game you like; if somebody doesn't like RPGs they're not going to rant and rave about it, much more likely to say 'it's crap' and be done with it.

Under rated for sure, because most of the people who make it out to be over rated either haven't played it or have only played part of it. Or, they played it for the first time in the last few years after all this next gen stuff has come out. I know myself, it's hard to enjoy a game that is older, even games that I used to like.

How can Final Fantasy VII be under-rated? lol it must get like best game ever on loads of video game sites/magazines

But in my opinion it's a little over-rated i much prefered FFVIII

Well VII is one of SE's biggest hits. I think it's a bit overrated in a way with all the spinoffs and whatnot. VII was a good game, I give it that but there's just so much of it like I said with all the spinoffs. That's all I really hear and how VII is such a good game(it is but still) and I always see all the spinoffs for VII but yet, SE doesnt really do that for any other FF game. =/

Under rated for sure, because most of the people who make it out to be over rated either haven't played it or have only played part of it. Or, they played it for the first time in the last few years after all this next gen stuff has come out. I know myself, it's hard to enjoy a game that is older, even games that I used to like.

That is a huge assumption you've made. We played the game the day it came out, and we played it all the way through. Even in its heyday, we felt it to be an average game.

Not everyone has the same tastes.

Although we liked the game, and although it's a good game. We will say that we feel that it is vastly overrated. A sub-par story that is riddled with plot holes doesn't qualify as one of the greatest games of all time in our opinion.

Good game: Yes.
Overrated: Vastly.

I'd have to say its underrated. Its a great game, one of the best in the series. I think all that was needed was FF7 and none of the spin-offs, making it, imo , underrated. It is and will probably always remain my favorite final fantasy, just too many character connections. Even the people that hate on it can't stop talking about it.

It was vital for the transition to the playstation, its success or failure could have easily shunned people away from future FFs..Unfortunately the move up to PS2 wasn't nearly as successful imo. Damn you square and your focus on the sparkly graphics...

FFVII is one of my favourite games of all time and I think it thoroughly deservers all the adulation it receives. The characters are by far the most memorable in any of the Final Fantasy games, all with unique personalities and idiosyncrasies. In terms of depth and feeling an emotional connection with the characters, I don't think any other RPG comes close. Plus, the myriad mini-games in FFVII easily blitzes every other Final Fantasy game - in the Gold Saucer alone there's about 20. Also, I don't think any other videogame-miscreant can ever top Sephiroth's icy-cool demeanour and badassery. And in terms of character customization, nothing beats the Materia system, albeit FFX's sphere grid came close. FFVII's Materia system was marvellously addictive, whether it's just me - but I spent just as much time experimenting with different Materia combinations and maximizing my parties strength as I did actually playing the game, which is a rather sad admission. And even though the graphics have dated and the characters look like amphorous smudges, the CGI cut-scenes are still impressive (especially the one where Weapon attacks Junon) and the back-drops still look delectable. I bet you're shouting "FANBOY" at the page right now. Stop it. You sound mental. FFVII definitely isn't underrated, though. An example of an underrated game is something like Freedom Fighters or Black.

I would have to say it has become over-rated during the years...due to the many spin offs (despite a few being good) a movie (which was awful) and constant appearances of a spiky hair guy in other games (Kingdom Hearts...etc). Despite FF7 being my first actually FF to play...it's not my top favorite, more like two ranks behind FF1 and FF6. however, hands down it was the best OST and it is very very enjoyable but I don't like the fact that SE has been milking it for so long >_>

I'm going to be honest- when I first heard about FFVII, I wasn't interested in the slightest. I'd gotten the gist of it via Kingdom Hearts and while I was intrigued by the characters I didn't have much incentive to play the game. Being a rather ignorant gamer until I finally got the internet I didn't look much deeper into it until after FFIX. Even then I wasn't impressed by all the new sequels and spin offs. They looked very showy, and didn't seem to hold much water beyond fan recognition.

Then I downloaded the game last year.

Whatever adverts or other representations of the game tell you seem to be an overhyped lie. I loved the game for entirely different reasons to waht's been protrayed and am still thoroughly enjoying myself. The sheer scope and dialogue is enough, but it throws in more by making boss battles cinematic in style (lets face it, the shinra rooftop summit and then switch to a fast paced elevator battle makes the combat system feel a lot slicker, even though it's the same speed as any other RPGs combat system. More proof that it's what you do with what you have sometimes.)

I can't say I enjoyed advent children though as it seems extremely fan-service-y, but I suppose that's the point. But the game is worth checking out purely because it is a one of a kind expereince that you'll honestly not recieve anywhere else. And you shouldn't let people dictate to you who the best chracters are beforehand, it's designed to let you make your own judgements. Watchmen works on the same basis. Both are masterpieces. So I don't think the game is overhyped, but I think a lot of its epicness is funnily enough from how humble some of it feels. A lot of people forget that not all high emotions can be classed under epic. Often the best epics are incredibly minimalist.
