Apart from Kuja being a cheap Sephiroth knock off with nothing original about him I really liked the game. It did seem however that they took the FFVII story and put it in a more fantasy styled setting and voila a new game. I mean Kuja was basically created just as Sephiroth(a war fighting monster) and closely linked to Zidane the same way Cloud was to Sephiroth. Also Zidane didnt know a lot of his past the same as Cloud and the similarities are really ridiculously obvious and endless. The first time I played through this game I didn't enjoy it as much as when I played through it this time which was recently.

Overall it's a much deeper game then VII even with all the similarities in the story line the story was actually done much better. When I was younger I was a VII fan boy basically without knowing it, but playing through this game VII,VIII, and X recently I have to say this was hands down the best FF to come out since playstation was released. I cant wait to play the ones I havent played yet. (Any after X). X was pretty terrible but whatever maybe I'll like it my second time through.

I like to think of FF9 is a much improved version of FF7. Zidane is just like Cloud, and Kuja is like a better more thought out Sephiroth. They also added a kind of epic story that actually made sense, and didn't have nearly as many holes as FF7. However, I do have to note the more Childish tone of this game as compared to others.

I liked FF9, but I didn't love it. It was a good game, but not great. I haven't played it in a while, so I might have to start again.

I liked it, overall. I first attempted it when I was 10, and only because I liked the guy with the monkey tail. XD

When I actually played it 6 years later, I found that I pretty much liked the story, but it felt a tad bit lacking at the end, for some reason I can't explain yet. o_O And I didn't understand why they didn't kiss until the very end, when it starts fading out. I was waiting nearly the entire game for that! :gasp:

but my overall opinion is that I liked it. Very simple and easy to play, great for a beginner or someone new to the FF series. :awesome:

I just want to add also, the morals of the characters were very good,
I liked the way that at the start it had the characters, and the morals they discovered on their travels, like zidanes 'you dont need a reason to help somebody'
and garents wich was something like 'someday I will grow up, but I will always be myself.'

I love FFIX, the battle setup and stats are ideal and should be used in all of the games. Though i don't like the instant trances which i think they should use the FFX overdrives and save those trances for big battles. But other then that, it's a pretty good game with an awesome story line!

I voted Love It, heres why:

First off I have to say out of all the FF's I have played, including FF VII I would have to say FF IX had the best characters in my opinion. They all had well written story's and I don't think there was one character that I didn't like to use in a battle. They all had great abilities that were unique to themselves and helped out in there own little ways.

Second is the storyline. From the opening sequence to the final battle the story grips you like the claws of death. I laughed, I felt anger(when the Black Waltz killed all the black mages on the Airship :gonk:), and I even felt sadness (when Zidane couldn't find himself). If they ever ever made a remake of this game it would well worth it for the storyline alone.

Third is the musical score. It another great job by SE, it was an epic soundtrack that kept me going throughout the entire game.

Fourth is Tetra Master. I really enjoyed this mini game, it was fun collecting all the card and playing the game wasn't hard to learn. I especially liked it at the end when you could get some the really cool cards.

Fifth is the Chocobo Hot and Cold mini-game. It was an awesome quest that you could do to not only get some really sweet ass weapons/armor, but it was really exciting to play the game itself.

All in all I can play this game over and over and not get bored with it, its an epic game and will always have a place in my heart.

I loved 9 as it was a definate return to form after 8 (I know some people like 8, but i felt it was rushed and the story was horrible) The characters had great personalities not to mention the world was pretty damn awesome, not to mention Vivi ranks in one my top 5 all time favorite FF characters ^^

The greatest!

IMHO, FF IX was about the best, if not the best, FF ever produced. I never played FF XI, even though I have it...I hope to fairly soon. FF X was OK, FF X-2 was better (I hope I don't get flamed/trolled for saying FF X-2 is better than FF X, that's just my opinion anyway), and I really liked FF XII, but for my money, FF IX takes them all. I've heard a lot of people didn't like FF VIII, but I liked that one too! Anyway, FF IX is one of the few RPG's that was so good I was nearly depressed when I got through the game...oh well, I know, I should get a life I suppose. :wtf: I just wonder, did anyone else have a hard time finding their way out of the Dungeon in the sand? I think it was the Sand Castle, or something like that. I think it was Kuja's lair, it's been awhile since I played the game. I didn't get the strategy guide for FF IX, so I think I eventually had to go to GameFaqs... or maybe I just got lucky...

Eeee, I loved FFIX. I play it a lot and I hate finishing it. I think the story was awesome and I'm in love with Lindblum and Alexandria, they're beautiful.
I think the characters were perfect, Zidane and Vivi being my favourites, and I liked the way they all had their little stories and that.
The only thing I didn't like about this game is where Necron came from, he just appeared out of nowhere and tried to destroy everything.
But yes, absolutely adore this game.

I have been a FF fan for many years, and I played the first one when it came out on the NES. I just recently ordered and started playing FFIX, and it is now my favorite of the franchise. It isolates the magic of the series better than any of the others I have played.

It could just be because i'm crazed on to FF in general but I LOVE the game. replaying it right now actually. One thing that I liked is how you can have 4 party members in =). I also liked Vivi he's pretty kick ass imo. The mini game Hot n cold xD haha. But, I enjoy playing the game and the story was great. Thought it was an awesome game :)

It's an ok game. I don't understand why it's hated by many, of course, I don't see why VII is idolized so severly by many either. I love all the FFs I've played except XII really. I also think it's incredibly silly to not play a game based on character design. Hello, they used to look a lot more choppy before the psone even and people still played then.

I really like FFIX, I'd even say I love it. It's definitely an excellent game, and I've spent many hours wasting my time on Chocobo Hot and Cold to get the Robe of Lords or whatever on disc one 8F The beginning is a tad slow for me, but I haven't even beaten the game yet (CURSE YOU SCRATCHED DISCS D: ) and I love the middle part. The mini-games are all pretty awesome, and the story is niiiiiiiiiice :ryan: It's not my favorite, but it's so far from my least favorite.. it's probably third or fourth.

I think the graphics are brilliant for a PS1 game, and hell, even if it was PS2 with these graphics, I'd be perfectly happy. I don't mind the style at all, I like chibis 8F They're not even properly chibi, but I like the cartoonish style.

I ALSO like the old-fashioned castle-like style of FFIX. I started the series on FFVIII, and I like FFIX's anyways. I don't care that it's different, different is NICE. The style is excellent :ryan:

So yeah. Love it <3

When i first saw the game i thought that i would hate it for sure, i dont really know the reason it just did not feel right.
Well, as crazy as it seems i ended up buying the game and loving every bit of it.
The story is envolving, the job system is pretty good, the character designs, personalities and actions are all well thought and balanced.
Some details like the zodiac coins or the chocobo mini-game made my day countless of times.

Overall, a great game with possibly one of the best story-lines among the FF series IMO.

A must-have!:ryan:

Love it of course. This was the first section I came to when I became a member here, I was instantly drawn to FF9. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Well, you've heard it before, folks, but here it is again: I. HATE. TRANCE. It is THE worst special attack system in any FF game (I would THINK, since I haven't played all of them). That and it went up very slow and the battles were very slow. Also, I didn't like the pixel-y style of all the characters and effects. I preferred FFVII's purely polygonal battle characters.

Now, with all that aside, I absolutely LOVE this game. I loved that it took a more fantastical approach, while still retaining some of it's steam punk styles (airships). Slightly disappointed that there were no guns, though. I also LOVED the FMV's with there fully orchestrated music. The final FMV with the play was the best moment in the entire game. This game differed a lot from other FF's I've played in that it put much more focus on the characters than defeating the evil badguy. They learn so many important life lessons and they all mature as people. I loved how in the beginning, Zidane's the one telling Garnet to forget about saving Brahne, but in the end, everyone else is telling him not to save Kuja, but by then he's learned from Garnet to love your enemies, no matter what they do to you. And the evolution of character in Vivi is astounding. How at first, it seems so natural to assume he's just a normal human with the black mage occupacy. And then you begin wondering whether he really is one of the normal Black Mage dolls. And then it slowly sinks in that he is one of them. And finally, at Quan's Dwelling, it's revealed that he really is one of them. But despite that, he chooses to rise above his created purpose and find new meaning. He goes from a bumbling kid into a brave-hearted warrior. And Zidane learns to make difficult decisions from watching Vivi. Then there's Garnet, and Freya, and..........I could go on, but suffice it to say they all made memorable changes in their lives. The only characters I didn't like were Amarant and Quina. Quina less so because s/he was supposed to be a silly comical character and s/he filled that role quite well. Amarant was supposed to be this mysterious lone-wolf kinda guy, and supposed to be a really good fighter and all that. He was simply lame. He got tricked by Zidane (okay, big deal, he got tricked. Why is that so important to Amarant?). He got beaten by Zidane in a fight. Doesn't make sense. The only reason he's with the group is because he's confused about Zidane's personality. Amarant is just an all-around.....just...........he's lame. Just purely lame. And then the love story beteween Zidane and Garnet is spell-binding. It starts out as just Zidane thinks she's cute and he's ladies-man so of course he has to pursue her, and she's not interested at all. But then he slowly realizes that he likes her, and at the point where she assumes the throne, he realizes he truly loves her, and is so heart-broken that he can never be with her. He even does the whole thing where he gets tongue-tied in her presence. Classic. And then, by the end of the game, she realizes that he truly does care for her and she cares for him too. Then her little memento to Zidane rolls and she expresses her gratitude to her dead friend who tought her so many things about life. And THEN, with a big finale, well, you know the rest. Whew!! I mean, it weas just epic. Purely epic. And I didn't mind so much that Kuja wasn't a really good main badguy because having him as one mainly served the purpose of giving the group a reason to stick together and thus grow as people as they struggled toward an end goal of defeating him. It's clearly shown by when Necron pops outta nowhere and when Zidane goes back to save Kuja. That, and the very last thing you see in the game is you know who and you know who in each others arms. Obviously indicating that their relationship was more relevant than the main badguy getting done in.

In contrast, FFVII ended with Sephiroths's defeat and the salvation of mankind (or destruction. It's not very clear which one it was). But Zidane and Garnet being in love has nothing to do with defeating Kuja, so you can see that it was more relevant that the characters develop their relationships.

In total, a VERY, VERY good game.

FFIX is the game that I feel wasn't afraid to have more fun, but at the same time wasn't afraid to turn the story into something totally character driven. FVIIs characters are united under a common cause- they're essentially a resistance and the character development while strong, is of course not the major point to its overall message. With FFIX however, the terms are more abstract- the characters are brought together due to thier dreams and traits and are an extremely varied bunch. Garnet plays into the hands of Zidane because she want's adventure (and travel for her kingdoms safety, of course), Vivi because he's confused, alone, and needs friends, and Steiner only because he feels a duty to the princess and actually gets drawn in for many different reasons in the end. The other four have simillar reasons and stories (though Amarant actually ties up with the badduns for my particular animated version. It seemed to make more sense that he'd be the bounty type verging on the side of good.)
The battle system isn't spectacular, but doesn't need to be. It's mainly the story and characters that drag you in, which is obviously going to be a bit slow or book like for some, and probably why FVII is hailed more- FVII is more frantic, with the gameplay coming slightly before an extremely well written story. So it makes sense that more people enjoy it over FFIX, as people seem to enjoy more instant satisfaction and success in general.. Those who do finally get to play FFIX may find that it's an acquired taste, a richly rewarding one for those who hold out for more. It's like a disney film, in that sense, with the fantasy element really being driven home.

To Lethe Albion, no FF needs to have guns. :) Notice "Fantasy" has always been the name of the game. I think only VII and VIII had guns, while some zombies in X had rifles.

But anyway, back to the topic. I loved this game, and honestly I found no flaws in it whatsoever. I loved Trance, the new spells (Jewel, for instance), the Eidolons, and the plot. Like the poster above me has stated, I agree that people prefer VII over IX because of the "instant satisfaction" you get. It's hard to get into IX, but the feeling, to me anyway, is SO worth it.

So it's been said why the main four remain in your party, so allow me to mention everyone else. Eiko at first had a crush on Zidane, but she also didn't want to be alone anymore. Freya was searching for her long-lost love, and perhaps remained with the party with hope of finding him again (or perhaps just helping Zidane out, for what he's done for her). Amarant joins to find out why Zidane is the way he is. And Quina's reason is bizarre, as it would just rather find the perfect cuisine although it becomes aware of everything around it.

I love IX also because it was my first game of the series. Sadly, I never finished it which is why I want a copy ASAP! I wouldn't mind playing others, even VII. But in my mind, none of the series are going to top IX's performance. However, I am thankful for the fans who loved the first FF (which was supposed to be the only one in the series back when, btw) as their love for FF gave Square enough reasons to create various sequels, and I'm sure glad they didn't stop with VII and VIII.

i loved FFIX. My first FF game i played was VII and was amazed by it. I remember so well, looking forward to when VIII came out. Then i played it and felt disappointed by dont get me wrong, over time i absolutely loved VIII, i guess it was just the feeling that everything was different in VIII but i soon realised every FF game was going to be different but hey it was good! Then i played IX and thought wow this game is as good as VII. Fantastic characters, music, good storyline and a decent main villain. I didn't want the game to end lol. Sadly for me, in my honest opinion and notice i say "opinion", i feel as though Final Fantasy died after FFIX (i would give X the benefit of the doubt for being ok because it was) but there were just so many changes after IX and i hated XII and not that keen on XIII either. It's a shame but ther you go, my opinion.

FFIX is alright it does not inspire me like other FF gsmes but enjoyed playing it when its time came. A good mix of the and the new with job classes and and the atb combining for the first time l think?

The only down side is the speed of the atb to make battles longer and trickier you dont slow the game down, you make the monsters more powerful.
