FFXIII-2 Discussion Thread

Saving anywhere isn't anything new obviously......But it could that mean we finally have shops in towns just like the traditional FF's? :awesome: I really hated the shops in XIII which could be accessed through the save-game menu.

As for the summonings, I think it's pretty certain they are getting rid of the gestalt mode which was nothing less the auto-battle (pressing X) . I don't think in XIII we'd be able to fight alongside summons but more with them (if that makes sense). As you may be able to tell from the trailer Lightning is fighting with Odin since there was no HP indicating Odin's HP only Lightning's, and the attacks she was peforming may only be do-able while Odin is present. As for the overdrive that looks pretty good too......But I really do hope summons are actually helpful unlike XIII.

Anyway, dont you think that Final Fantasy XIII-2 is more of like a FFX clone or not?

That may be the case in terms of summoning now.

But more interestingly, in terms of music......Yes....and like Cid XIII-2 a partnership between Masashi and Uematsu like in X would be amazing. I think it may be a little more liklier (not likely though :sad3:) that he could've composed some music. If you listen to the music in the trailer, when they show actual real-time gameplay the music is almost no different to FFX's assault.

E3 2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2 Impressions

Here is a link talking about the impressions of FFXIII-2 from RPG Site. Enjoy!

Update#1

Here’s Why Serah Is The Main Character In Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy XIII-2 changes protagonists and puts Serah, Lightning’s sister, as the leading lady. Why? That’s one of the questions Siliconera asked Motomu Toriyama, Director of Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Before we get to the answer there is a key spoiler from Final Fantasy XIII below. Just a heads up if you care about that kind of thing.

"Serah is Lightning’s young sister who turned into a crystal in an early point in Final Fantasy XIII and Lighting goes on a journey to rescue her," Toriyama summarized. "In XIII-2, it’s the other way around; the two characters switched places. Lightning still plays an important role in the story, but the main character you play as is Serah who is looking for Lightning."

We saw a scene with Lightning riding Odin and fighting Chaos Bahamut at E3. Even though she is in a different world, Lightning retained her strength from Final Fantasy XIII. While Toriyama wouldn’t give specifics he said, "Almost all of the main characters from Final Fantasy XIII will make an appearance in some way or another."

We’ll have more from the Final Fantasy XIII-2 development team later this week.

I'm in agreement the armour does not look good, but my thinking was maybe she's in a higher position in the military and the armour is to show her status or rank. Who knows, only time will tell, can't wait for this game though

I think her armour must have something to do with her worshiping the Goddess Etro, if anything. I do not think there is a military in the world Lightning is in now so.. yeah. She is in a sort of world of death. Since XIII-2 is supposed to be darker, I can understand that. Serah and Noel saving Lightning is obvious, but what if the different choices lead to different paths? Well the game has player choices so I am guessing more can happen. It is more interesting than FF XIII that is for sure.

I wonder if we'll get more new playable characters. As much as I'd love to use Sazh, Snow and Hope for battle again, I'm curious to see new blood.

DarkShadow
It was confirmed in some interviews that we can buy stuff from NPCs.

Fusionist
Don't quote on me, but one site claims that Alyssa is playable.

Onion Knight
Moogles :) But yes, I agree, we need more non-human races.

Her armor is valkyrie-like. according to Serah in the demo, the world lightning is in is Valhalla. She still has Odin as summon.

The link is, in Norse Mythology, Valkyries bring the chosen to Valhalla, which is ruled by Odin.
source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyrie

FFXIII seems to have some allusions to Norse Mythology. Ragnarok, Odin, Valhalla, etc

About FFXIII-2 looking like X, I don't mind this, as long as the game is good.

Hmmm... the other way around? That might be interesting. I only hope that when Lightning does make an appearance, Serah becomes useless for that time.

Why would you want Serah to be even more useless than she was in the last game.

You actually get to play her this time, and you don't want to <_<. Then again, I can see her just being bait, instead of actually doing anything that can help progress a battle.

FFXIII-2 70 percent complete, features branching dialogue

A number of snippets of information have snuck out of Japanese press following Final Fantasy XIII-2′s E3 showing.

Andriasang reports the latest issue of Shonen Jump has the game at 70 percent completion.

In a leaked interview with Dengeki, director Motomu Toriyama made a mysterious reference to the possibility that FFXIII-2 will ship on fewer discs on Xbox 360 than PlayStation 3. The cause for this reversal is said to be reliance on real-time cut scenes rather than cinematics.

Other escaped details include the prominence of new protagonists over FFXIII’s hero, Lightning; individual AI for NPCs in towns; and the reappearance of FFXIII’s Snow – apparently free from jealousy, is the spoiler-free way to put it.

More intriguingly, the game will feature something called a Live Trigger dialogue system, allowing for interactive conversations and different content on multiple play-throughs. Toriyama said the new system will make conversation mo0re enjoyable rather than direct the course of the plot.

Thanks, CVG.

I already posted this news here: (it's in different phrasing, but pretty much says the same thing)
http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/showthread.php?t=48668

Still confused about Snow's lack of jealousy :D

Oh okay. I guess you beat me to it. Anyway, about Snow, is that a confirmation or just a speculation?

Well according to the source, Toriyama himself says that Snow won't be worried that Serah goes with Noel. There must be a reason that we don't know of, yet. But it's still absurd why he didn't come to rescue when those sinscales-thing attack Serah in the trailer.

Oh, shoot, I meant that I didn't want Serah to become useless like the last game...

Lol, Snow isn't the jealous type? That's really disappointing. Would've loved to see him confront Noël, and they getting beat up.

Sorry for backtracking, but I gotta admit, I love the whole Valhalla referrence they're having going on, and it kinda puts me more at ease with Lightning's outfit, but I'm wondering how exactly, and if for that matter, she's gonna go back to the other world. 8(

Also, boo at Snow not being jealous. I'm not sure whether to think it seems in character though. I mean, on one hand, with how obsessed he was with Serah, it'd make sense for him to be slightly possessiveness of her, yet on the other hand, it would make sense for him being very liberal and thinking "oh go for it, gender shouldn't restrict who you can hang with! :awesome:" Either way, I was hoping for a bit of drama with that :sad3: Though I guess that doesn't weigh of the chances of it being possible to have Serah run off with Noel.

My guess is he's not there to worry about serah...

He's off somewhere.
Whether he's in another realm like Lightning is I don't know.

I presume Noel was the hero they wanted originally but decided to replace him with Lightning.

We'll see how good he is at the hero thing.

lol.

Toriyama and Kitase Discuss Final Fantasy XIII-2

More on monsters, music and main characters. Plus, what does Kitase have to say about remastering PSP titles?

Dengeki PlayStation has an eight page feature on Final Fantasy XIII-2 this week. While most of the content was announced at E3, the magazine does have a lengthy interview with director Motomu Toriyama and producer Yoshinori Kitase.

We covered a bit from the interview earlier, but here more details from Sokuho's writeup.

ON CHARACTERS

Newcomer character Noel knows little about Cocoon and Gran Pulse, Toriyama noted, saying that he wanted to have Noel in a similar position to a newcomer player to FFXIII -- that is, someone who doesn't know about the world and story.

As mentioned earlier, Lightning is a major character, but Noel and Serah, the two characters featured in the E3 demo, are main in terms of characters you control.

Just in case you're doubting the central role of Noel, Toriyama's closing message in the interview was something along the lines of, while the strong female character Lighting was the draw of the previous title, XIII-2 features Noel, a cool male main character.

During battle, Toriyama said to think of Noel as fighting in the front and Serah supporting from behind. Noel's job image is hunter. He hunts monsters in Gran Pulse.

I assume you've heard about Serah's Moogle weapon already...

ON THE E3 DEMO

The E3 demo was like a digest version of two chapters with most of the story sequences cut out. When playing the game, you'll see how Noel and Serah meet.

ON MUSIC

The game's main musical component is from Masashi Hamauzu, the composer from the original FFXIII. They're doing an experiment where Hamauzu will retain the same feel of the FFXIII music while a different composer (Or possibly composers?) will work delivering a new world view. Toriyama said to look forward to the staff's announcement.

ON MONSTER RAISING

The game's new monster raising component, which lets you gather and bring monsters into your battle party, will give the game greater strategy, Toriyama said. There are Defender monsters, Attacker monsters and so-forth. There's also a growth element to the monsters.

Sokuho's writeup says that your party can consist of at most three characters, including the monsters (this is different from some of the earlier leaks). However, you will also sometimes have one guest character come in.

OTHER BITS AND PIECES

Other points mentioned in the interview include:

  • Your party members will move around town and get into conversations
  • When it rains, people in town will gather under covered areas.
  • The weather will have some effect on battle.
  • There will be search/exploration element involving Moogles.
  • The save system will in general be auto save.
Separate from FFXIII-2, Toriyama said that the upcoming Easy Mode patch for the PS3 version of FFXIII will be just that -- a patch, and not download content (I presume the difference is that a patch is free). In case you're unfamiliar, Easy Mode was included in the Japanese Xbox 360 version of the game. Square Enix is timing the PS3 version's patch with the 7/21 release of the game's Ultimate Hits budget version.

Kitase commented briefly on Sony's new PSP Remaster program which takes PSP titles and remasters them in HD on PlayStation 3. He said that he's interested in this program, but because they're placing their full effort on Final Fantasy Type-0 and XIII-2, they currently don't have anything decided.
