[OOC] In This Life

Hey, I think I'd like to sign up for this RP if that's alright :) I'm still trying to get a bio together for a character, I think I have the personality/background aspect down, but I'm still trying to gauge what type of job I want to have :hmmm: And sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, but what sorts of jobs would one do in the Cleric's Guild? Also, are there guilds that are specifically oriented towards Water or Wind users? And how does one usually learn magic, does everyone go through the Guild of Magical Arts and then go from there into whatever specific profession they want to work in?

Also, @Tipsy--what sorts of jobs would Renka hand out, is she the master of a particular guild? Sorry if I'm missing any details but I'm not completely clear on how the Guild system works, or which particular guilds are going to be more relevant to the story :hmmm: I might still end up wanting to be in a guard division anyway, but I'd like to get more of the details straight before I decide.

hm.... well... im not sure if we DO have a guild set up yet due to lack of ppl in the rp. I say for maximum interaction, i think Guard will be the best bet since there is three Guards right now. As for jobs... that really depends. I guess it ranges from monster extermination to flower picking XD.

Still, best bet is to wait for Ras to answer.

@ Ras:

i was just wondering, yknow how you made Yin feel defensive at the petty revenge line, did you by chance think that was directed at her?

Okay, thanks :)

Also, one other thing I forgot...is there an age limit (minimum or maximum) for entering any of the Guard divisions? (Which I'm guessing Grunts are entry level, right?)

nah, dont think so. its the skill that gets you anywhere, though i think realism has to apply somewhere. So i guess a 13 yr old wouldnt be a black or white tiger.

I wasn't thinking much about realism, but provided you can give a passably realistic story, I can accept kids in high ranking positions. But just don't expect the other characters to take your character seriously because of the age issue... But for seriousness' sake, I guess, try an older age.

A fresh change, I suppose, considering how often it is to see characters of rather young ages, below 20 and all... Like mine, hee.

@ Tipsy

I believe that referred to whoever that failed to inform her about the meeting?

Well, I do know it wasn't directed at her, just that the words kinda struck a note with Yin.

Oh. Actually I was hoping to do someone who's young and not very high up in the ranks yet ^_^ I hope that's okay--I was just wondering if something like, 13 or 14 would be too young for entry level positions?

Nay, that's okay. I kinda forgot for a moment this role play is meant to be the free and easy sort. It won't have a really definite story line for the most part... Only events that will mainly be the daily life sort of thing... Occasionally major events... Well, whatever else that happens depends on you.

I'll only toss in some random events from time to time.

But yeah, anyone 13 to 14 is fine... Could be a Grunt or Orange Tiger...

... Really, it's your choice :D Nice to have another player interested.

Okay cool, thanks :) Also, I do have a good part of the bio and first post done, but my internet has been off and/or hanging by a thread all day, so at the earliest it would be sometime late tomorrow before I can get anything up :/ But I am trying ^_^

Sorry to double-post, but here's my bio, I hope everything in it is okay for the RP :) Let me know if I need to change anything. If it's all good then I'll get my first post up soon too, I have that close to being finished as well.

Name: Pan Mingzhu
Gender: Female
Age: 14
Race: Human
Job: Guard, Grunts Division
Appearance:

PanMingzhu3.jpg

forbidden-kingdom-21.jpg

Mingzhu is rather petite, around 5'1 and weighing about 100 pounds. She is attractive by the standards of many; however, she does not pride herself on her appearance, and she is not usually considered to be “gorgeous” or “a knockout.” She wears somewhat humble clothes when not on duty, and always keeps her long ebony hair tied back, for practical reasons. When on duty, she wears the standard guard uniform for the Grunts Divison; anything else, she figures, would be a sign of disobedience, and to have a mark against her for the sake of flaunting her appearance would only be one more extra cumbersome, unnecessary trial for her to contend with on her proposed journey upward through the ranks.

Personality: Though she is capable of appearing calm at times, Mingzhu is habitually fierce and standoffish. Due to a long history of struggles and disappointments in her life, she has learned how cruel the world is, and that one must often fight for things that others merely take for granted. She is constantly assessing the people around her, trying to determine whether she can best them if the situation calls for it; and other than her sparse and somewhat incoherent family, she seldom trusts anyone. Haunted by the heartache of her past, she is determined to rid the world of anything that causes people to suffer, and she will stop at nothing to rise through her ranks in order to be in a more ample position to do this. Despite her noble intentions, she does come across as a bit immature sometimes due to her headstrong attitude, and will not hesitate to argue with people much older than herself if she feels the situation merits it; however, these arguments are generally out of fear for the safety of others, or fear for the failure of a mission whose effects could potentially benefit a large number of people.

Fighting Style: Mingzhu has a short, wiry build, and she uses her speed to her advantage. She has average strength for someone of her size, and due to her young age, she doesn't have all that much experience in either martial arts or magic. However, she is in the process of studying mainly close-quarters techniques that allow fluidity, such as Baguazhang and Wing Chun. She has not settled on one particular style to focus on yet, however, because she has not been in training for very long and is still testing which ones would be the most practical for her needs. Due to her lack of serious brute strength, she also favors a good balance between offense and defense.

Mingzhu is also in the process of learning Earth magic, though her skills aren't particularly advanced at this point. Despite her hot-headed attitude, she had been attracted to the idea of magic that was more defensive than offensive due to the lingering guilt she holds over having been unable to protect Nianzu from danger, or at least attempt to heal him once he'd been wounded. Plus, the rumors of necromancy associated with the element have had her curious, ever since she heard them, whether it would ever be possible for an extremely powerful mage to somehow restore those who had perished to their original state, rather than mere skeletons. As such, she is involved in magic not only for the power behind it, but in order to learn more about what a mage could be capable of if he or she applied herself avidly enough. Her commonly used spells are:

Rift—A spell that creates a wall of earth between the caster and his or her enemy. The size of the wall depends entirely on the power level of the caster; as Mingzhu is a beginner when the story starts, her walls would probably be no bigger than seven feet tall, four feet wide, and one foot thick. No matter the size, they will remain standing until they are knocked down or broken apart by an outside force.

Camouflage—A spell that enables the caster to draw small rocks and dirt from the surrounding area onto and around his or her body, so that he or she is completely covered by them and blends into the landscape. (This spell is, naturally, only effective in wild areas where one would normally see large rocks or mounds of dirt, and would not work in a developed area like a city.) The spell is the most effective when the caster is crouching or lying down, and its effectiveness depends on the caster's ability; Mingzhu, at the beginning of the story, would only be able to cover herself with a thin layer of dirt if she was lying flat on the ground, and if she tried it while crouching down, it would probably not work very well.

Rapid Growth—A spell that causes tree limbs, vines, or other plant appendages to quickly grow longer and more tangled, which when used between two trees, for example, can weave a net full of thorny vines between the caster and their enemy. This is especially useful to slow down enemies who are pursuing the caster, and the spell can be used anywhere where plants grow, including large gardens within a city. The spell may also be used to aid the caster in climbing to higher ground; if he or she uses it on a vine that is above their reach, they can cause it to extend lower, and then grab onto it, using it to climb to the roof of a building, or the higher branches of a tree to escape from danger. There is an offensive version of this spell also in which the enemies themselves are entangled in the vines, but Mingzhu has not learned it yet at the beginning of the story.

Wound Binding—A spell that causes a tightly-woven patch of moss to suddenly appear from out of nowhere and grow over an open cut or wound in order to bind it shut, to stop the bleeding. The moss acts as a tourniquet if wrapped tightly around a limb, or a bandage if the wound does not need a tourniquet, and this particular type of moss used has healing properties which help the person's skin grow back over the wound more quickly. This spell would not be able to save someone whose wound was life-threatening or who had vital organs exposed by the wound, but it is effective for stopping bleeding caused by deep lacerations, and helps to keep wounds from getting infected as they heal also. Mingzhu has made a point of it to practice this spell the most, and thus she is more proficient with it than her other spells, but the spell itself is only for basic healing and has only limited power even if someone performs it perfectly.

Rockslide—A spell that tears chunks of earth and rock from the side of a cliff, hill, or other precipice, and causes them to come crashing down onto whomever is standing below. This is Mingzhu's only offensive spell at the present, and being a novice spellcaster, she can only dislodge sections of dirt and rocks of about five cubic feet in size.

One other thing that Mingzhu prefers about Earth magic over the other elements is the compensation for its use—after hearing about each one, eating bowls of soil sounded far less inconvenient than the other ones.

Weapons:

Mingzhu's preferred weapon is the single-edged butterfly sword, which she carries a pair of at all times (these, not the weapons seen in her picture above). They are each about 15'' long with 6'' handles, which are wrapped with a simple woven grip made of black cord. Mingzhu values practicality over showiness, so her weapons may not look fancy; however, their effectiveness makes up for it. The long curved quillon on each one serves to deflect enemy blows rather nicely, and the blades themselves are only sharpened halfway down on their cutting edges; the rest of the edge is used for blunt strikes and blocking, in order to keep from wasting a sharp edge on such things. The blades are easy to conceal due to their smaller size, and are easy to maneuver with during the close-quarters combat techniques that she employs. She keeps them in simple leather sheaths at her sides when they're not in use.

Mingzhu also owns a wooden crossbow for long-range attacks, though she only carries it with her when she anticipates a necessity for it. With it she can hit targets up to about 175 yards away, and she keeps about fifty bolts on hand in a leather pouch that hangs at her side (larger than the one seen above).

History: Mingzhu grew up in a somewhat poor family, living in less than an attractive home and having a minimum amount of toys, fancy clothes, or other possessions. As a result, she conducted most of her activities outside, keeping in shape just by playing in the streets with other local children. One of these children, Nianzu, a boy two years older than her, became her dearest friend for a long time, inhabiting a residence close to hers and spending more time with her than anyone else. As the two matured, Mingzhu grew to fancy Nianzu, finding him to be an attractive, charming, and completely infectious young man who teased her incessantly, to the point where Mingzhu thought he might share a mutual romantic interest in her. However, as Nianzu grew older, he started noticing other young women closer to his age, and—much to Mingzhu's dismay—became infatuated with a picturesque young lady named Fenfang. Fenfang's mysterious behavior soon made an envious Mingzhu suspicious, and over time, she gathered a substantial amount of evidence to prove that Fenfang was an animal shifter, transforming into a wolf at night and never making herself seen in the city anytime after dusk. Determined to drive the unwanted competition away, Mingzhu presented the evidence to Nianzu, who, in his state of captivation, naturally turned it down, dismissing it as mere rubbish. Infuriated, Mingzhu finally hit the last straw, and snuck into Fenfang's house one night while she was away, stealing white animal hairs off of her clothes to show him. However, her evidence, yet again, was rejected, and one night Nianzu finally decided to follow Fenfang's invitation to meet her in the woods outside the city, for what he'd presumed would be an evening of romance.

Mingzhu, determined to keep any such thing from happening, followed Nianzu out of the city, and continued to plead with him, warning him that Fenfang wasn't the girl he thought she was. He still failed to listen, however; and after telling Mingzhu to leave him alone, he walked off the rest of the way into the woods without her, where he quickly met his death by the hands of a transformed Fenfang. Traumatized by the ordeal, Mingzhu caught sight of Fenfang's wolf form as she was leaving the crime scene, and vowed silently that she would meet the woman again, when she herself was armed and stronger, and avenge Nianzu's death. She also vowed to do whatever she could in her life to prevent such tragedies from happening to anyone else, and made a decision that night to join the Emperor's guard, with the hope that someday she might lead an army against the world's dangerous monsters, any other animal shifters who were unscrupulously preying on the town, and whomever else threatened the good of society in general. At the point where the RP begins, Mingzhu will have been in the Grunts Division of the Guard for three months, having elicited something of a negative reaction from her aunt and grandfather for it, the only living relatives she has and the only people in this world she currently trusts.

the picture is missing. i cant see it.

As for her clothes, i lol. She is the polar opposite of Fei XD.

Interesting character tho.

Thanks :D

And, can you see the picture now? :hmmm: That's really weird, because when I first posted it I could see it, but when I just refreshed the page I couldn't see it either. But I changed the location of the picture so maybe it will work now, I hope O_O

But if for some reason you still can't see it, it's Crystal Liu from the Forbidden Kingdom movie in an action pose XD I actually tried looking for an illustrated image first, but maybe I just wasn't looking in the right place, but I couldn't seem to find anything even close to what I was looking for :hmmm: So I went with live action ^_^

Accepted and added to the Characters Thread.

For a start... Who knows... Especially since you would have been in the Grunts division for three months now, it would mean that your character would have been present when my character, Kai Yin, went all violent on those Black Tigers...

If you want, you could make your character the exact same Grunt that my character sent out to get the other White Tigers - which brought me Tipsy's character in this case.

Oh, and also, I guess it's a lil' hard for your character to join in with ours when she's not all that high ranked yet... So here, a little mission that I've added to give you something to do... I get ideas when I read that too, so there, hee.

@ Everyone Else

Do take more frequent looks at the Information Thread, would you? The second post in the Information Thread will frequently be edited to show new missions which your characters can undertake - granted they meet the predefined requirements.

i say still post a post in the info thread. I have a habit of only checking threads with new posts.

I just wanted to make something clear to you Ras. Shirou would basically be a secondary character, rather than a main. He will always be by Fei's side unless she sends him off, or he goes on one of your mission. So in essence, he would always be mention mostly in her posts. Renka on the other hand, is a fully fledged main character.

That said, you know how i said i was tempted to make a four character and that her being a robot (truthfully, i had intended to use Kos Mos)? Ya think i should go ahead with it? It might give interactions with character besides guards.

Hm... I'm quite hesitant about doing that, largely because that's like spamming for post counts, no? Sure, maybe it's no one liners... But considering only the creators of the role plays are allowed to post there... Wouldn't I be multi-posting? Gee :D On the other hand, I'll probably have the longest chain of consecutive posts if I do that.

that or we could disable post counts in that thread since all you would be doing is updating, so you wouldnt really be losing or gaining any posts.

btw, this is a c&p of what i editted later above.

I wouldn't mind. Though, would it be too much for you? 4 characters in a role play... You'll probably be the first person I've ever seen to have taken up so many characters all at once. :D

That, and isn't that familiar? Lol. Sounds like it was taken right out off Diar's role play... I forget the name though.

Yeah, and I suppose they should make that area a non-post count section... In fact, they should separate the Information Threads from that section. If we make the entire section non post-count, all successful role plays that make it up there... Lol. The role players would suddenly see their post counts drop, lol.

Ill be fine. Renka is more a backgroundish type. A planner and mastermind who orders Fei around. So i wont be stressed in posting with her every single time. In a sense, if i do make Kos Mos, she and Fei will be the one i will post a lot of. Plus, first person is a bit easier to four way

As for Diar's one, i had that idea for this RP first. I was always gonna go with a Robot, but i just wrote it for his first.

As for disabling post counts, see if we can just limit that to your thread and not that sub section.

Cool, thanks for adding me Rasmorya :) And I was planning on having Mingzhu see Lady Kai yell at the Black Tigers in the palace, so that works out fine :D I don't think I'll have her be the particular grunt though if that's alright, I sort of wrote a part about myself watching that happen already^^

And that mission sounds interesting too. Is someone going to direct our Grunt unit to go out there though, or should I just say that that's our ongoing mission right now, as though we were already told to do it before the time of my post? :hmmm:

(And I love the robot character being referred to as Kos-Mos btw :D Xenosaga!!! :x3:)

Well, this mission is the latest addition, and wouldn't be directed by anyone in particular. Probably, you could take leadership, or just have a random Grunt play leader in these investigations. This case is related to a spate of disappearances...

And well, all else is up to you. You're free to decide what happens on this mission. But you won't meet hostiles. You'll find clues... but clues to what? This is what you can come up with, that would determine how the story will continue, hee

Okay cool, thanks :) I'll try to get it up soon, I have most of it written and just have to add the stuff about the mission for the most part :hmmm:
