I started with a Warrior, Red Mage, Black Mage and White Mage fore the PSP version a couple of weeks ago...it has served me well so far, apart from the White Mage is lower level because she always dies.
First time i chosed Warrior,Blackbelt,White mage and a Red Mage.Didn't complete game with it.
Then i chose Red Mage,Black Mage,White Mage and Blackbelt.Got the game trought with it and with next ones:
A BB and 3 Thieves
2Thieves,BB and RM
4BB-s
1RM and 3 Warriors
I played it on GBA. Before I gave up, I used an Fighter, an Monk, an Black Mage, and an White Mage. I think I also tried an Red Mage instead of an Monk. I forget names. But, as I said, I decided I didn't like the game and just played II instead.
I just used the default of Fighter, Thief, Monk and Red Mage, but I regret the choice in a way because the Red Mage is unable to learn some useful spells (HARM and HEAL, for example), and the Thief was quite weak for a while. The names I used were Kita, Lock, Jama and Just respectively. Oh, and I might as well give you some advice, that you should look carefully at the stats that each weapon and armour gives you. I found that the Monk was best wearing no armour at all.
Warrior - my name
White Mage - Maria
Thief - friend's name
Black Mage - brother's name.
I always use a black and white mage because I can get the best skills for both magics that way. A fighter because of the strength and HP, and a thief because my friend chose it.
I think I had:
Warrior = Kain
Black Mage = Argor
Theif = Blade
White Mage = Lulo (girls name.... Half way through the game it was revealed that White Mage was a man!)
Foolishly, I assumed that the Red Mage would be able to learn all black and white magic. As such, I chose to take a Warrior, a Monk (and failed to realise that they work best without equipment), a Red Mage and a Black Mage. As soon as I acquired Cura, I found the entire game much easier ... but I do wish I had taken a white mage. That said, the Red Mage is almost as physically effective as my Warrior.
