Rinoa Rant

She's okay.
At first,I've found some of a her actions annoying and selfish.
But after a while I realized she helped Squall out of his shell and brought out the best in him.

I have nothing against female characters who are openly vulnerable.
In fact, any type of character can be good...if they're done properly.

Which Rinoa is not.

Let's compare her to Garnet. Garnet is actually younger than Rinoa and she has a much larger chip on her shoulder. Her mother's cruel actions, the discovery of her true heritage, becoming Queen only to have her and almost instantly destroyed... She had to deal with a lot.

And she dealt with it. She suffered, trying to understand what was the reason for it all. Through these tribulations she comes to understand the importance of others; that being a ruler doesn't mean you have to rule alone.

Garnet runs off to Alexandria and gets captured...but I don't blame her for that. Why? Because she just wanted to try and stop her mother. She just wanted to believe in the person who raised her.

Rinoa got captured becaus she formulated the most rock stupid plan ever.
"Um, Ms. Evil Incarnate, would you like to put this on?"

And no, she's NOT a normal teenager. She's the leader of an anti-governemtn resistance group. Though if we're honest, it's more like a retarded child playing soldier. I wouldn't be surprised if her prime motivation for opposing the government was her father issues. Afterall, he's a MEANIE!!

Oh and let's not forget her brilliant desire for peace and hatred of fighting...that was brought up once and would never be talked about again.

FFVIII's story has good points. Rinoa is not one of them. FFVIII's whole message is "Love will find a way". Rinoa is he daughter of Laguna's first love and Squall is the son of his second love. Laguna could never be with Julia so their kids got together.

That's the only function Rinoa serves in this game.

I always thought that Quistis and Squall should be together... but the whole drifting in space/coma thing was enough to make me change my mind. But I do think a Quistis and Squall would make a (better) couple.

To be honest I do like her, but if I didn't it'd be because I wish I were her and could be with Squall in the world of FFVIII. She is very believable and she has a sense of standing up for others and fighting as well even if she isn't the best fighter. I didn't like how Squall was so far from interested in her and then when she goes into a coma he completely flips into crazy loving her....wasn't believable to me. I was like "wth...why does he like her now?", just too sudden imo. This is my favorite game still though and I enjoy playing it again.

Uhh Garnet's only a year younger than Rinoa. Not exactly an age gap worth mentioning.

Just because Rinoa is part of a resistance group it doesn't mean she doesn't have the personality of a normal teenager. This is the world of FF if you remember. There were supposed to be a lot of these resistance groups anyway I doubt it would have been too difficult to form one.

Rinoa understood that she had to fight, it would have been boring and stupid if she kept bringing that up all the time.

If you thought that's the meaning behind the game's love story then you may want to play again and pay attention to the main plot. There is clearly a love story with Rinoa and Squall. Her 'function' was to get Squall to finally open up his emotions. She's the second main character and serves a bigger purpose than most of the others.

Fair enough if people don't like her, a lot of people hate Squall but it doesn't mean they're bad characters.

Rinoa was pretty immature IMO. (at first anyways) I never really understood the reason why she 'hated' her father so much as to make a resistance I kindof felt like they needed to expand their relationship a bit. Rinoa was a tad annoying evenso more annoying then selphie... (at times) I know it must've been hard for her but, she to me didn't really seem like she knew what was going on and with the whole SeeDs thing and whatnot.. and just followed. <_< Yeah I know she had to 'blend' in whatnot nd 'pretend' to be one... but seriously? Although she was annoying sometimes I think she's an ok character. She does end up breaking Squall out of his shell which is good I guess-- but then again that made him different from the other characters in VIII. She didn't really seem to have a backbone though imo and where she was going-- I felt that she was a little too emotional. You have to be strong. I'm not saying shes weak (and ik her beccoming/finding out that she was the new
sorceress
is a tough one to deal with.. but besides that she wasn't on her own two feet if you know what I mean. And sometimes she was selfish >_>

Rinoa was okay, I guess. She wasn't overly annoying or great in any way. She could have been more vulnerable at least, like Yuna or Garnet. She did not seem like a lead, though. She just seemed to like Squall and thus she became the star of attention due to her trying to get the protagonist. She was slightly annoying and she did not seem right for her role either.

Imo, they should have made Quistis the female lead and made Rinoa just like Selphie, not really that important.

I actually really liked Rinoa in this.

Some people may be quick to point she's the typical damsel in distress, but she's not exacty a stereotype either. The girl had an attitude on her and I really commend the makers for giving that to her. She's proved that she can stand on her own two feet at times, although having her getting kidnapped a few times can be a bit annnoying.

But apart from that, I didn't really mind her. In fact, I really adored her throughout.

Well I'm not the most social guy ever but I haven't met a teenage girl who calls people meanies. So I don't think it's normal teenager stuff.

Or maybe it was just horrible storytelling.

So what was the moral of the story? Love conquers Squall's lonelines. Love conquers the main villain. Love conquers space and time....
Yeah, sorry. The main message of FFVIII is Love Finds A Way.

Personally, I am a Rinoa lover yes, You all do point of some things though I agree with wizard Howl. Seifer and Rinoa werent really dating, she developed a natural emotion called a crush, that was it. When squall came into the picture, something drew rinoa to him. Quistis admits that she was drawn to squall but in a different aspect later on. Rinoa is a Unique indiviual, she isnt like most girls and that is what the whole concept was, is to make Rinoa different in her own way. She is supposed to be the opposite of Squall kind of like a psychonfirina(cant spell it) thing. Squall doesnt become outgoing and she doesnt force him, she just states he needs to not hold in everything because in reality holding in a lot of emotions will actually harm a person's mental health, so its best sometimes to express yourself.

Hooray, I can rant about Rinoa. I found Rinoa really whiny and I really didn't understand how Rinoa & Squall got together. When Balamb Garden is in danger, all she cares about is his ring which I didn't really understand why she needed it, Zell runs to Squall when she's in danger and Squall dismisses the issue, even when Zell says "Squall, she could die!" Yet when she's in a coma, suddenly he cares and he starts pining for her. She creates a complete mess for Squall and Irvine, causing them all to almost get killed just because she's being childish, believing she can help the situation when in fact she makes it worse.

I have never seen Rinoa 'whine'...like ever... So it seems your problem is more with the fact of whom got with who, not really Rinoa and the rest of your rant seems to be about squall not Rinoa, you seem to be ranting about how Squalls feelings came out of "no where".

She made a mess for them once, and might I add she had the best of intentions, were it not for Quistis that wouldn't have gone on...

So because she is optimistic she is childish? having hope to better a situation makes one childish?

She wanted the ring because she loved him XD :randompoke:

Sorry but your reasons for disliking her are bogus.

It's called a difference of opinion. Let's not insult people by telling them their opinions are "bogus" or invalid. Thanks.

Sorry I guess I flew off the handle, I am pretty angry so I guess I took it out here...my bad.

I find her slightly less retarded and more down to earth than Garnet. And downright more likable. Garnet always seemed kind of pompous to me.

My favorite ladies will always Tifa, Quistis, Ultimecia, Lulu, Fran, and of course Freya. Women who can handle themselves. <3

I never saw Rinoa do anything wrong to anyone, she flirted with Squall but that was all really...She may have bossed Squall around to flirt but she didn't do that to anyone else....

Maybe retarded was too harsh.

She played the naive, kidnapable girl but it was downplayed enough for her to be interesting. And she grew more than Garnet through the game. I don't like Garnet.

But during the early parts of FF8, Rinoa was pretty bad.

How? Is all I am saying I never have seen this, I ask people who say it happened and I never see the proof or at least a reference to which part they are talking...

I don't know Garnet just didn't leave a negative or positive mark on me XD

The inept Timber resistance. The stupid train plot. The interactions with her father.

And she gets kidnapped/possessed by the sorceress a few times.

The train plot wasn't dumb really it worked but none of them thought there would be a dummy not even SeeD.

She is in a resistance group how can she NOT quarrel with her father who is trying to lock her away?

Once, not counting when she was controlled mentally, and then when Seifer took her.
