The Purpose of Rikku?

The mix can sometimes be a great overdrive you know!. for example if you have learned all of the Al Bhed primers you can tal to the Rin agency owner who will give you 99 underdogs secret witch can be mixed with rikku's overdrive make 25.000 damage on each enemy ( the same damage bahmut's overdrive does)

I never really used Rikku, but like Rydia said, her Overdrive did prove useful when you knew what to mix.

I figured Rikku as a the initial chemist. Mixing item to make awesome combination is really helpful.

But you could really have anyone being anything after a while. I know a guy who had Lulu doing 9999 damage with her doll o_O

I thought she was quite useful actually, her over drive is pretty nifty, especially early on - double HP can be a life saver on some of those harder battles

She's also fast and I like to steal from anything and everything so she was fab for me

My Yuna is always the first character to reach 99999 damage, I dont know how that always happens to me but it gets annoying when Auron is only doing 36k or something lol

Well The Only Thing Shes Good For Is Disabling Machina And Stealing And Using Special Items Only Usable By Her(depends if another character learnt use on sphere grid)

Sorry for such a late reply, my university is cranking up the work load and play time has shrunk accordingly. Thanks for your posts, they all came as on topic, insightful and non abusive.

Due to using the ultimate weapons around the time I posted, her mixes are no longer as useful. However, a few of those look fantastic for reviving a nearly dead party and I will remember them for that purpose.

As a few have mentioned, Rikku is very fast and after moving her through Auron's grid and equipping Godhand she is now surpassing 9999 damage. Once finished with Auron's, I'll move her onto Lulu's grid and see how effective she can be as a Black Mage but with terrific speed. I'll post about it after I beat the game this second time. Her combat usefulness is steadily increasing after moving her to other grids.

Personally, I thought she was cool, but not the most useable.
Kinda like Kimahri for me; I liked them, but didn't use them.
Her Overdrive was good, until you start getting Ultimate Weapons and people are doing 9999+ damage per hit (Go my Auron/Tidus; doing 99999 just after Yunalesca) and so her usefulness damage-wise aint so great late-game.
But her revival capabilities were pretty good.

Lets not forget she was able to fight underwater aswel, she did have her uses :monster:

My main party was mostly Auron, Yuna & Wakka but she was my next most used character

Later on I guess she does become a little redundant but early in the game I thought she was one of my most useful. Steal/mug is a command I abuse plus she was a goodsend in the calm lands & mt Gagazet

Theres also that underwater fiend in the monster arena, I forget his name Shuyin or something >_<

There's an underwater Fiend in the monster arena? Lol! Also, I'm pretty sure Shuyin is from FFX-2. o_o...Lenne's lover. haha.

Anywho, Rikku can be very useful with her speed and how she can steal items that could be useful for customizing your weapons. =)! She can be pretty handy.

Also, with the underwater battles, you can have her learn black magic (Thudara or Thundaga) and use her that way too.

Lol its called Shinryu, I was close. You can only use Wakka Tidu and Rikku against him, so she has her uses

he also drops wings to discovery and they can be useful aswel

Rikku was one of my favorite characters in the story line and to play with.

I think everyone here likes her mix ability and the fact she can go underwater but I think in the game itself she was kinda useless besides with the machina and giving support to Yuna.

Yeah she wasn't a good main character now that I think about it. Still like her though

Sorry for letting this slip for so long, I only just finished the game (take 2) Friday night. GREAT game, beautiful ending.

I have to say, Rikku was very useful. As commented on here, she was hyperactive to begin with, and with hastega and GodHand, she was dealing out 30,000 damage or more on rapid fire. Her magic wasn't as strong as Lulu, or Yuna's Holy (50000+ on Braska's Final Aeon...easy), but the speed with which she could doublecast flares and ultimas made up for it. She is a very useful character, she only takes a little patience to make her so. And for obtaining better armors, her ability to steal proved invaluable. I still haven't relied much on her mixes, but will do so if I play the game for a third time (which will be the Japanese version, there were a number of parts I felt were "lost in translation.")

Thanks for this mature discussion and "useful responses", I can't say the same about nameless other forums I have visited.

Rikku was actually my second strongest by the end of my game, I always ended up switching her into my party a lot so she could steal and dismantle the robots. I dunno about you but she leveled up pretty fast in my game, there was a point where she was stronger than Tidus! (and I always used him)

I also had her go into Yuna's sphere grid so she knew Holy and Yuna went into hers to learn steal and stuff, it was quite useful.

Actually, Rikku was one of the most useful characters in the game. Especially against the dark aeons and penance. Her Mix abilities like Super mighty G were great.

Also, it's impossible to complete a 'no sphere grid' game without her.

Rikki's main purpose was to be a thief and get the first hit in but her only other use was her overdrives but even then they were only usfull if you new the right combination and on top of that they don't do much when your stronger.

rikku actually has some great mixes to use at the beggining of a big battle, for example there is one (i believe it is 2 fortune spheres but i could be wrong) highly increases your parties luck, making pretty much every hit a critical hit, and doubling your damage for the entire fight

Dunno if I answered this (probably not), but I believe that Rikku's purpose is for some comedic relief. None of the characters are really that funny, and her eccentricity and bubbly nature brings some humor to an otherwise depressing game.

Also, I think she's included to help gamers (and Wakka) see Spira from a different perspective; that of an abused race.

haha i used rikku loads during my first game, she was me first player to get her celestial weapon and for a time the hardest hitter on me side in a fight but yeah she's handy for her overdrive specially with the bosses, i still use her more now then yuna or wakka lol

I found her speed useful. She nearly always had first and second turns in a battle, so I'd get her to mug or cast a spell, then replace her with a slower character like Auron or Lulu!
