[V2] Last Movie You've Seen

Skyfall

As Mr. Pooley indicated, Bond fans will have a new favourite in their list after what happened in Quantum of Solace. Though the last didn't do well, they rebounded hard with Skyfall and to me, this is one great step to future Bond films that'll be good hits and has the capacity to be good if done right with the right themes of the current age and era and the proper characterization. The Bond Girl was stunning and elegant in many ways as well and it felt great to have at least the prominent one rather than 2 or 3 that they used to do. Finally, the return of Q has long made it here and I was glad cos he was never there in Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace. All in all, this movie I feel is a game changer to me and that it will make the Craig era all the more unique in many aspects.

On another note, I dont know if this is true but is the game 007: Legends incorporating certain flicks canon in the film franchise (Goldfinger, License to Kill, etc) to Craig's era along with Golden Eye and Bloodstone? I heard Goldfinger, License to Kill, and Die Another Day now takes place between Quantum and Skyfall or something. Cos if so, then I'm relieved, I can have all bonds in one packaging thanks to the games. ; . ;

moneyball

considering it was oscar nominated, i was expecting a really good film, but sadly it wasn't. which is a surprise because aaron sorkin usually writes damn good stuff, but i just felt it was far too slowly paced and i found myself willing it to end for the last 20 minutes or so. once they had reached 20 unbeaten games, i didn't care anymore, that was definitely the climax for me. the rest could have been explained on screen with the same effect in next-to-no time. how jonah hill was nominated for best supporting actor is beyond me, he spends most of the film either standing or sitting or following brad pitt around.
i suppose if you're a baseball fan then it would probably be a different story since a lot of the terminology and technical speak went right over my head - i'm not even that impressed by 20 consecutive wins really. it was a poor man's damned united in my eyes.

Monster

I'm always intrigued when an actor physically transforms themselves in a movie (so far, Heath's Joker remains my favourite), so I decided to give this movie a shot. Plus, I'm a huge Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci fan, so that definitely contributed to my decision.

I really liked this one. Charlize is a wonderful actress, and her work never allows me to forget why she's one of my top favourite actresses. I don't know anything about the woman this film was based on, so that makes Charlize all the more admirable, since she filled everything out herself, without leaving any "facts" speak for themselves. So I didn't feel like I necessarily had to go look up Aileen Wuornos.

It was good, I'd recommend it. Very emotional.

HUGO

Yeah, it's a kid's film, but I'm deeply interested in what today's youth are being influenced by, so it's... research... okay, sometimes I just like reverting to a simpler mindset.
It's not a bad film. An orphaned boy lives inside a clock in Paris. The plot takes a few unusual twists and I half expected it to morph into a 'city of ember' but it sticks to reality, which honestly kinda disappointed me, but it's still pretty fascinating.

Saving Private Ryan

Watching this film again has no less impact than the first time I saw it. I puts you right into the action - accentuating the drama and gore of war in a truly touching way - and Tom Hanks did an excellent job, too :P

Savages

It was alright. I didn't like how far they ran with the R rating though. Blood, guts, occasional nudity, I can handle. I just can't stand rape scenes. It really sets my anger bar to a max.

Honestly, I really liked the two women in this one. I thought they were pretty well-written, which is a tough find. I enjoyed that aspect of it, but I wouldn't watch it again.

Argo

Affleck's latest. The positive reception is noticeable through various film rating sites such as Rotten Tomatoes, and with this I went in with an idea of what kind of film would garner such praise. That is not to say I went in with high expectations, only an idea of what would be positively received by the regular critics of RT.

The direction is competent, albeit traditional in its approach. There was no outstanding innovation, and there were emotional cues that I thought felt dated. Film is a manipulation of images, words and sounds. While you are consciously aware of it, you are not meant to -feel- it.

The score was adequate, although its application was poor. Traditionally, a film score acts as an emotional cue, and in this film, its application is so cliche that instead of reacting emotional to said cue, you are consciously acknowledging its purpose and this can be attributed to the clashing implementation of a) A realism-style representation of the majority of the films save the "emotional moments". What with the scene Tony Mendes discusses parenting with the producer, his moments with his son, his return home and the triumphant ending. It contrasts heavily with the bleak representation of Iran's condition in those time. Which leads me to:

The politics of this film. At first I considered whether my opinion was formulated out of my being a Muslim middle eastern, though my proposition differs from the Iranians, especially the ones being portrayed in the film, in many ways. I realized that my opinion was in fact shaped by objective observation of Hollywood and America's history in its political treatment of the film industry and its products.

The timing of production and release of the film is problematic with the political and international conditions and relationship of both America and Iran. The representation of the the Iranians for the majority of the film, the choice of frame compositions, the emphasis on America's involvement and underrepresentation of Canada's efforts in the Canadian Caper mission raises suspicion of the propagandistic nature of this film.

There were a few apologetic moments in the film but they are heavily overshadowed by the emotionally impactful yet problematic scenes where the Iranians are maniacally screaming, can't be reasoned with (they show this explicitly in a poorly written scene with poor rhetoric) homogenous angry mobs and easily offended. While there are indeed peoples such as this, as I said, the intent of the film is questionable in its emphasis on this and its effect and influence can be problematic seeing as how it is a film that emphasizes the differences rather than the similarities of Iranians and Americans, from an American perspective. Making the Americans "funny", developed and likable while the Iranians, as mentioned above, homogeneously angry and savage almost, makes what was attempted to be apologetic feel thrown in as a defensible device and false justification for objective and fair representation of what otherwise is, a propagandistic film.

Journey 2: the Mysterious Island.

We went to the theater for this one, and on the way there, we got lost :/. Anyway after 3 hours of circle driving, we made it. It was a pretty good movie. I only wanted to see The Rock though.

Life Or Something Like It

Definitely one of my favourites. My only complaint is Angie's hair.. just no. Flatten that shit out, at least.

Unfortunately, the last film I've watched was Resident Evil Retribution. I swear, with each new RE film, Paul Anderson manages to achieve the impossible; making one worse than its predecessor. Seriously, that man deserves a slap for well and truly fucking up that franchise. -_-

I'd watch it just to see Milla Jonavich. With her fine self :D

White Chicks

I shared a room for 3 weeks with a stand-in for this movie, and hearing about her terrible experience makes it nearly impossible for me to look at this movie the same. The brothers are a couple of sexist whores and their behavior is what caused her to quit the entertainment industry altogether.

Yeesh. Still quite funny though

Rise of the Guardians

It was fantastic everyone go now and watch it omg. I'm not going to go in-depth and serious because I am just fangirling all over the place. Delightful characters, good plot, high quality animation and...

THANK YOU DREAMWORKS

Skyfall

Technically this is the last movie I've seen that I haven't seen before :lew:

We went to go see this a couple of weekends ago. I loved it...it wasn't my favorite Bond ever...but I think it was really good. The action sequences were awesome and it had a really good plot. There were some sad/shocking moments in it but nothing really broke my heart. If you are a fan of the series, you should see it. It was a vast improvement from the last one...which was so horrible I hardly remember it's name :hmmm: Quantum of Solace :damon:

Pocahontas

Disney. What a great film. Bitch is sexy as fuck too. I love her. She deserves a lot more credit as a Disney princess.

Run Lola Run

This is the second time I have watched this movie and I STILL have nothing bad to say about it. It's a fantastic piece of film that should be viewed by anyone who appreciates the art of movies. That, and it's just SO effing good! :wacky:
