[V2] Last Movie You've Seen

:mokken: you are wrong.

Maybe you saw a late screening of it? Lots of Cinemas randomly show an older movie every now and then.

:ohoho: I beat you at movie trivia for once.

anyway, the last film i saw was the master. it's directed by (the wonderful) paul thomas anderson, and (the also wonderful) starring joaquin phoenix and philip seymour hoffman. it's based scientology and it's founding, to a certain extent, but it's about a man who after the war becomes an alcoholic and accidentally stumbles across a party hosted by lancaster dodd (basically l. ron hubbard) and slowly becomes obsessed with the man and his teachings. i can't really decide if i like the film or love it. it's superbly acted - phoenix is my man for lead actor at the oscars, and philip seymour hoffman is as faultless as ever - and is really engrossing to watch. it's very well paced, which is a problem i usually have with anderson's films, UNTIL the end. for the last 15 minutes or so, i found i just didn't care. i thought the film ended terribly and didn't hold up to the previous two hours or so that you've just watched.
i definitely want to watch it again though, and i may end up changing my mind on the end when i do because i feel i may have missed something with that. i can't decide if i think it's better than there will be blood or not becaus of how poor the end was...

i saw a few films over christmas

the descendants
i thought it was quite poor, especially for a film that was so hotly tipped for oscars this time last year. i didn't think there were really any stand-out qualities that made it a powerful enough drama to warrant a nomination for any award. my main problem was the music, that was obviously heavily influenced by the fact that the film is set on hawaii and the nearby islands. because the subject is something quite serious and dark, the upbeat island music really detracted from that tone. i also despised the young boy who was travelling around with the family for the whole film. he had no role other than to babysit the younger daughter every now and again, and it was utterly pointless including him.

mission impossible 4
not a superb ground breaking film like the original mission impossible, but it's a very fun, very enjoyable action film that told it's story very well and had some excellent set pieces. best of all was definitely tom cruise climbing the outside of the burj khalifa, i found that whole scene very tense and was well followed up by an equally tense fake meeting.

magical mystery tour
there was a making-of documentary on before the film, and i'm very glad i saw that first because otherwise i think i'd have hated it. there's no discernable solid plotline, and it's literally like watching an acid trip on screen. however the documentary explained a lot of the creative thought process and so on that went into making the film, and knowing all that beforehand made it very enjoyable. you can see that it influenced a lot monty python in several ways. the dream sequence in the restaurant stronlgy reminded me of the restaurant scene in the meaning of life

I saw the new hobbit on boxing day...... it was soooooo awesome....... and the 3d was awesome to. it was the first time I saw a 3d film and went wow..... also that ending

I've also watched a few movies over Christmas vacation :wacky:

Act Of Valor- This is the first recent and decent war movie I've seen in a long time. The action sequences were very real, the acting was decent, and the plot was pretty good. I'm really not the war movie type and I watched all of this and liked it, which was really surprising :lew:

The Bishop's Wife- This was a Christmas movie that we got from Netflix. It's a black and white one from awhile back, but the plot is very good. A Bishop prays for help to save his failing church from closing and what he ends up getting is an angel who works through the other people in his life. I really didn't care for the Bishop too much, as I saw him to be a very self-involved type, but at the end I think he realizes that and changes for the better. Anyways, this was a Christmas movie with actual meaning, so if you like the older/classic movies, I say go for this.

The Relic- I haven't seen this in awhile so I popped this in last night. This is a really good thriller movie and I'd put the creature in this along the lines of the Aliens from the Alien movies. The plot always keeps you guessing until the end of the movie when there are a lot of "oh snap" moments. If you liked the Alien movies and are looking for a decent sci fi ish thriller you'll really like this.

i just went to see pitch perfect earlier, and it's surprisingly excellent. i first saw the trailer a few months ago and was completely unimpressed. i thought it looked like a very bad mix of glee and films like street dance. i was sold on it by a mate who told me it's more like mean girls, and i'm very glad i gave it a chance.
it has it's problems, mostly because there isn't much holding the story together between key moments, but the characters more than make up for it. they're all enjoyable and get a goood amount of laughs, although fat amy and the quiet chinese girl who's name i forget get the best moments. it has a great end when they inevitably put everything behind them and win the championship, and it's impossible not to enjoy their performance at the finals because they're all great performers.

if you need sold on it further, anna kendrick gets her kit off in the shower which is very nice.

The Hobbit
Saw this in the cinemas, it was good, I enjoyed it but you could tell they were drawing out scenes for as long as possible and I did find myself getting a bit bored every now and then... like the first hour or somethign they're just talking in Bilbo's house. That kind of got dull. But I did enjoy it, enough to get the Book and give it a read... though you can tell they tried to un-kiddy it for the movie haha coz the book is very children orientated which I should have expected but didn't because the movie was a little violent :hmmm: Either way good movie! And Killi (SP?) is hot

Wreck it Ralph
Probably going to become one of my favourite movies. It was so funny and had so many video game references that someone like me (and a lot of people on this site) would really enjoy, there was a little FFVII joke in there too :ohoho: I think the Aerith lovers would enjoy seeing it. I was worried from the trailers that the little female character would become annoying but she actually grew on me and I really enjoyed her, Ralph ofc was the best though, also I liked Fix it Felix haha. I plan on seeing it again sometime very soon!

Paranormal Activity 4. I waited for this one impatiently, but it was worth it in the end. Just my opinion but this one is the best in the series. It starts out with subtle spookage and doesn't really get all nitty gritty til the end. Just how I like it.

The Expendables.

Saw the trailer a few years ago, looked interesting. Feelings about the movie as a whole were not reciprocated. I think what bothers me most though, is that I couldnt take that general guy seriously when he plays Angel Batista in Dexter. I also fell asleep in the middle of it :\ sylvester stallone looks like a douche with a goatee, just saying. I feel like the highlight of the movie was when jason statham beat up all those guys, because it was very gratifying on a personal level :monster:

i was pretty disappointed, probably going to watch the second movie anyway just because nothing better to do

shallow grave
the first feature film directed by danny boyle. he's one of my favourite directors and i've seen practically everything else he's done, so this was a must for me to watch. the fact that it has christopher eccleston and ewan mcgregor sold me on it further. it's a psychodrama about three friends, who take on a new flatmate who then commits suicide on his first night there. when they find out, they also find out that he has a suitcase full of money and decide to bury the body and keep the money. if you've seen a danny boyle film before then you know his style, so you'll have an idea of what to expect. i don't think it was quite as slick as trainspotting, nor as visually impressive as 127 hours but it is an extremely great film to watch, with some really spooky and creepy storytelling

Currently watching Pocahontas II. :lew: I actually love this movie; few do.

SPOILER
John Ralf is nicer than John Smith. Far more polite and gentleman-like. He truly cares about what she values; John Smith saw the value in her world, but didn't appreciate it independently. I suppose love opened his eyes to new ideas... :hmmm: John Ralf respected their way of life from the first moment. :)

technically hercules returns. i've seen it before. the last one i watched that i havent seen was megamind as suggested by my wonderful pal, and great great mogjut Squidward. i dont like that ferret guy usually but i very much enjoyed watching it and im sure i'll watch it again one day soon.

this was on my whopping cinema screen sized tv.

django unchained
actually the second time i've seen it, but you can't just watch a tarantino film once. it's executed with the usual tarantino style, and has everything you would traditionally expect in a western. there isn't a single bad performance in the film, but leo di caprio in particular is excellent. even christoph waltz's horse acts well. naturally as a tarantino film, it messes with the facts of history and makes you laugh at the grim and brutal misfortune of others. there is a brilliant moment when men in white hoods are talking about how they 'can't see shit through this thing' that got a lot of laughs.
it wasn't as good as inglorious basterds though. there were one or two bits that felt horribly edited, and there were definitely some big points missing (there was a character that seemed important, but was annoyingly never explored).

The Descent and The Descent part 2. One of those non american films that I stumble across that is really good. Unfortunately the last one has a whack ending but it's something you rarely see happen in movies these days:

All the protagonist die.

i did a double today
zero dark thirty
a really really excellent film, and an oscar winning performance by jessica chastain. it's a different film to the hurt locker, as it feels much less like a documentary, and more like it has a story to it and a bit of a purpose. the first half an hour or so was very slow, and that's really the only thing that i felt let the film down. it picks up pace a lot as the story moves on, and it does a great job of drawing the audience in which makes the last hour one of the best cinematic hours you'll see.
there is a rather distracting cameo from john barrowman, but thankfully he only has two lines so it's easy to ignore and forget him.

lincoln
i won't pretend that i loved it, because i really didn't, but i can appreciate it for the fine film that it is and it will almost certainly win best picture at the oscars. because i have no interest whatsoever in american politics, i didn't understand what they were talking about for 95% of the film and this spoiled it. it's not quite the film i expected, but at the same time it is. i think to truly enjoy it, you must know the background to the passing of the 13th amendment and about the civil war. daniel day-lewis is amazing as lincoln and there were moments when i got chills from his better more 'presidential' moments. tommy lee-jones is also fantastic as a supporting actor and most of the more easy-to-watch moments had him in

Sweet 16

This film won British independent film of the year in 2002.

The basic plot follows a 15 year old teenager in Glasgow Scotland. His mothers in jail and his step father is an abusive junkie.
Ive just finished it now but its one of those films that really hits home, and youl remember it for a long time because its a very very good example of what its like to be a poor kid in the rough areas of Scotland. You can relate to the characters so well its quite scary and thats what drives it into your head. I think everyone in Britain knows someone like this or has similar experiences. The film got flak abroad because although being in English people needed subtitles to understand the thick Glaswegian accent. Which i call nonsense. If they hadnt went with the accent the film wouldnt be as real or as hard hitting as it is.
Any british person i think will associate with this film. It mimics lower class culture exactly as it is, doesnt hold back anything. A difficult film to watch at times but overall absolutely brilliant. The accents are hard to understand aye but its worth watching. Great movie.

I SHOULD have been watching the movies on my Review movie list thread... Unfortunately, I have been putting that off because it is a REALLY long movie and I have had no time since I had gotten the request to watch it to actually watch it...

So... Randy and I watched Paul....

Paul was an odd, silly movie which I did not expect to like, but did. It had what's-her-face from Bridesmaids in it which made it all the more enjoyable to watch... It was good, but not THAT good... :/
