so, what are your thought on this protagonist? is he too feminine sometimes? does he not fit FF protagonist standards? what do you think?

I think overall, he just.. lacked personality. -_-
His voice actor should've had more feeling and oomph.
Other than that, I thought his lines and persona were pretty BOSS.

He's rather dull and emotionless, with very little motivation for the story. There were times when he just seemed... there... instead of actual being there and doing anything.

But considering that Asche is supposed to be the main protagonist and hero, I guess it's to be expected.

A lot of people seem to dislike Vaan... he's kind of like the Tidus of FFXII. (As far as the hate factor goes, though I do think the two look similar also) I really liked Vaan a lot. He definitely became one of my favorite characters. He was such a sweetheart, a lovable idiot. Like, he got carried away with the things he said, but he was a good guy, and it was forgivable stupidity. His love for his brother is so sweet, and his interactions with Penelo are just plain adorable. x] Not to mention his child-like naivety about airships and sky pirates... it was like Balthier was his hero.

Anyway, the only thing I didn't like was the randomness of the all. Why is Vaan on that journey? What's his purpose? His struggle? What's he trying to prove? There's not a lot of detail- that I agree with. Though, that doesn't make him a necessarily bad character.

Well, I prefer Tidus over Vaan on any given day of my life. Vaan's personality and lines are awful.
Like when
you meet Gabranth at Pharos and Gabranth said that he was the one who "wore Basch's face" and slew the king and Vaan added "And Reks" and gave a monologue how Reks have died and there's no bringing him back.
I don't fricking care, Vaan! I don't think the other characters still care about it. And the monologue sucks too!

I actually don't mind the girly appearance of a male protagonist as long as he has an interesting personality, which Vaan does not have, in my opinion.

Other than his weird chest, his appearance didnt bother me too much, oh and his odd nose ¬.¬

character wise though, he was j ust shit, he didnt seem to have any kind of personality, didnt really feel like he had much to do with the plot either, he felt like a filler character but he was the main guy? I thought he sucked, removing him from the plot probably wouldnt even impact it at all, infact, it could have been better. Reks could have still existed, we didnt even need to have Vaan to have people lmow what happened there

Vaan's design wasn't too bad, but it certainly could've been better in my opinion. Vaan's voice annoyed me though, usually video game voice acting doesn't bother me too much, but for some reason I found Vaan's voice quite annoying.

I think SE decided to give the player control of 'the observer' who was "along for the ride" as opposed to the main character.

I like to compare playing FFXII as Vaan to playing FFVIII as Zell or FFVII as Vincent. In the sense that the character who the player controls leaves very little impact on the story.

In some sense, the fact that the player controls 'the observer' provides more ambiguity as to who the 'main' character really is. In previous games like FFVII and FFVIII it was fairly obvious that the main character was the character who was controlled by the player. But in FFXII the main character is less obvious (I personally think Asche was the main character, but that's another story).

But in my opinion I found it pretty boring to play as 'the observer' I.E I found Vaan boring and I would've much rather seen him more involved in the storyline.

I think Vaan was just a character role which anyone could play. They could take a villager of Rabanastre and put that one there. He had no feel of Main Character or "Character" at all, but as previous members said: He isn´t really supposed to be a head character. Still, too much lack of personality.

I find him to be a poor character story wise. Forgettable, no personality and the story could still function without him being there. He was a decent fighter though and I always had him in my party so that was his strong point.
Basch seems to be MUCH better suited, plus I've heard that Basch was supposed to be the main character but Vaan was inserted to appeal to a younger audience.

I didn't like him. Arrogant little runt with pencilled on abs. -_-
His voice was horrible, like fingernails down a blackboard. His persoonality was non-existant, and he was utterly pointless. I never used him, and would have gladly rid myself of him.

I'm definitely not a fan of Vaan, but I really think that saying he has zero personality is a bit of a stretch. He did have motives to join the party, but they were very subtly presented. Though I will agree that I think of Ashe rather than him as the main character. Vaan is the main character in the sense that the player experiences the story through him, but he does not drive the action, Ashe does.
As for his dialogue, it was ok. I didn't really mind it. I really thought it was funny when he asked Fran how old was she, though.
And about his design, I didn't mind it either since it's a bit inspired on Aladdin. He's supposed to be a poor orphan so I don't picture him using luxurious clothing.

All in all, Vaan isn't the best character in the series or FFXII for that matter, but he really isn't the worst either.

Vaan imo is one of the worst FF main hero's ever, he is emo and whiney and is pretty quickly irrelevant to the main storyline.

Gimme FF good heros like Cecil, Cloud, Locke and Zidane with real charisma, personality and leadership skills over this chump anytime. XP

I was kind of expecting some really big plot twist with him while I was playing it. Srsly gaiz, how cool would it be to think that Vaan is just this whiny kid that tags along and all of a sudden this really cool thing happens and you get a whole new respect for him?
Okay, I was half kidding about that. :ffs: It's usually that way with most of the leads pffft.

I don't think he was terrible, though. I liked his design, and I didn't even mind his voie that much. He's just one of the characers that I kind of forget about, so I can't really say I minded him all that much.

Buuuuut, on the flip side, I kind of liked having a new kind of main character. He wasn't really the whole focus of the story, but I do think some of his story could have been expanded upon.

Honestly,I think it was hilarious how he let Balthier steal the spotlight from him.
It was more Balthier, and Ashe's game than Vaan's.

Which is pretty sad seeing he is actually the main character.
It was weird how I actually thought he got progressively annoying through the game.

Vaan to me was just a simple way of bringing the party together.
Further in the game he had no reason to be there.

"I'm just along for the ride" is pretty much his best quote. It is his main reason for being there.

Even though I am sure Ashe was happy to have another person to help with the fight

Didn't really mind the grudge he held for the death of his brother but thought that maybe he was too angry/ grudgeful. He didn't know how to held his emotions, and usually he threw a ''fissy '' in the worst of moments. Which guess could give him the nametag ''annoying''. But his brother died during a Empire Attack, guess he has a right to be mad.
Don't mind him anymore. Kind of worked out that disliked him because of scary bony abs and like somebody said before -his strange voice/ the way that he spoke.

I'
And about his design, I didn't mind it either since it's a bit inspired on Aladdin.

Also like him because of this reason. His cheeky attitude and baggy pants kind of gives off a ''Disney's Aladdin style '' & loved that movie. ^-^''

Vaan is one of the characters where you either loved him or hated him. In this case, I didn't take any sides, he was pretty bad when he came to express his feelings, and his costume sucks, but overall I think that he fitted in with the story completely and is quite entertaining.

Well for me, I'm no where near half done beating this game, I really like it, but Vaan really does suck. I keep telling myself, stay and play on it might get better. He is a good fighter, other than that worst FF character ever, it would be a better story playing as a chocobo ;)). But he is not to to bad, just I feel his actor did not give enough emotion.

FFX and FF8 had great stories, great characters that had emotions, even more so on ones that didn't have voice overs.

Vaan IMO makes FFXII none enjoyable and makes you want to play one of the older FinalFantasy's. :gonk:

With little work they could have have changed the story to use Reks instead of Vann then I would have been happy except for one thing. He needs more armor I was disappointed by the facts that non of the characters wore armor in large amounts. But I am not sure why that bothered me.
