Vaan

Everyone's gonna hate me when I say this, but I'll say it anyway. I actually liked Vaan. I mean, sure his voice was annoying, but he wasn't half as annoying as Tidus.DX

I didnt like him, he was too girly, and didnt fit in with the othe heros who always seemed full of themselves but still love able, him on the other hand had a rubbish personallity, apeareance and voice. All in all I would choose any hero from any other game rather than him.

agreed. I will give you that. when Vann first saw Basch and tried to attack him for killing his brother i realized he wasn't gonna be another Tidus

id rather listen to a self-centered, egotistic main charter throughout a whole game then an over sensitive pussy

No one's gonna hate you, nor should they hate you. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. I, for one, agree with you.

But in general, I didn't care for Vaan as a character.

I (think I) understand what they were doing with the whole "Supporting Member POV" thing. Conceptually it's a pretty interesting idea. It allows you to play through the story as one of the heroes while taking on an observer kind of feel to some of the "larger" aspects of the game. As a result, you get a feel that you're both playing through and being told the story. Again, it's all interesting in thought (we've all wondered what the supporting members must feel or think in the different FFs), but I guess this goes to show that execution is a whole lot harder.

For one, if you're going to pull this, the protagonist at hand has to be very interesting, and that's what Vaan wasn't. His occasional smug was the best thing about him, because that added a little spark to an otherwise dull character.

Second, the character should give the feel that he has some kind of real connection to the plot. It doesn't have to be major or pivitol or too impactful or anything, but at least something that seems like a real point of interest. They tried this with the Reks thing, but in order for that kind of thing to stick with us throughout the game, I think they need to put more emphasis on it through the character. Otherwise, despite what happened to his brother at the hands of the Empire, Vaan still felt like he was just caught up in everything.

I feel like the above things easily apply to his companions more, like Balthier or Basche or even Fran. They weren't the story's leading figures either, but they had a helluva lot more interest to them than Vaan.

Hope that all makes sense. In short, it was nice in concept. But the execution wasn't done right. This made Vaan, overall, a pretty lame "main protagonist".

Other than having the personality of a zombie, the spray on abs, the oddball voice, lack of depth and complete irelevance Vaan wasnt so bad lol but seriously he was just a poor excuse for a main character he reminded me of a twelve year old Tidus

so, what are your thought on this protagonist? is he too feminine sometimes? does he not fit FF protagonist standards? what do you think?

He definitely was different....In a good way? No. Vaan just seemed to be put in there out of no where, If I didn't play the small part of the beginning I'd swear they ripped him from another game -__- From his voice all the way to his look >.> Lets just leave it at I'm glad you didn't always have to have him on your team...

Well Vaan may not be important in this story but as told thoughout this game Balthier makes claims to be the leading role which many people may agree with but Vaan was supposed to be th obsever to show what a main character is like from the outside also if Vaan wasnt included in this game then who would take the role of leading man in revernant wings which Vaan clearly stars in and his character becomes more developed x

I am of the general consensus here in saying Vaan was a poor character. The story actually revolved around Lady Ashe more than anything. Vaan was put in there to take up space, with no given purpose really. Tidus is in no comparison to him, Tidus was well involved with each character in FFX.

Vaan was .. well.. out of touch with everyone in general.

It annoyed me that he was essentially the main character, he wouldn't' have been that bad as a minor side character, though still poor. If anything it annoyed me how it was constantly switching between him wanting for revenge for his brother's death and him wanting to be a sky pirate, both on opposite ends of the scale.

Ashe was a better lead character, at least her stories of saving the empire and revenging her husband were linked together. Although she was still a poor character overall.

Yeah, Vaan annoyed me >.>

He is great, but I think that he could have more of his story linked together. Anyway he is great but if he had more story linked together he will be even better.

I......didn't care too much for Vaan. I liked him to some degree, but he was lacking the usual qualities that made up the hero of a story. The most important, to me anyway, is how involved they are in the story.

Vaan is an orphan who lost his brother, he wanted to be sky pirate..........honestly, I don't see how these fit in with the actual plot of the story. It seemed to revolve more around Ashe than Vaan. It's like he was just there by accident, like he got pulled into the story, but had no real reason to be there. Overall, I say Vaan makes a horrible main lead, and his character didn't develop at all. Oddly enough, I didn't find him to be all that annoying. He was just a badly done character.

Vaan is an ok character. But with every1 saying he doesnt have personality, that's not totally true. I honestly never viewed Ashe as the main player, to me it was always vaan. but the creators could have given him more.....depth. his story is pretty obvious from the beginning, i think that it would have been a lot better for vaan if he was given more story.

For a little while, it seemed that Vaan would fall in love with Ashe... But she just never let go of Reks..... I think that the plot did lack a sense of importance from Vaan, seeing as he never even confronted those feelings he was obviously developing.... And to those who say Tidus was an annoying oversensitive pussy? He is a badass who fell in love.... When you love someone, and they are put in danger... you tend to become quite emotional. The tendency of Tidus to become emotional is parallel to how a real person would act. That is what makes him a good character; he had a feel of purity and a real person to him that regular games never try to achieve. It makes him, as a character, more in touch with our realities... But I digress.... This is a thread about Vaan, not Tidus... Vaan, overall to me, was an underdeveloped character who had a lot of untapped potential... He was not annoying, he is just young. The prospect of expecting a teenager to have enough experience in life to act like an adult in every situation is simply unfair... Although I myself am a teenager, I find it appalling for people to expect so much maturity out of such a young mind.... The kind of people who are like that are the ones who force the young to grow up too fast; robbing them of their childhood; when a child grows up too fast, and does not experience a good enough childhood, they will never be able to fully recover... People expect too much are truly sickening... But again, I digress, all that was reffering to the real world... Not the game... Oh well, you guys have my opinion, take it or leave it....

Vaan was just bad. All he did was ask questions, look dumb and get in the way and why was it that Vaan could also see vossler? its been awhile since i played through the entire game for story and idk if it explains why.

I'm sure that there are many 17-years-old that act like Vaan (I know a couple, but not exactly like him). The question is, why is he the main character? Why not a 20-year something guy, who acts more mature and has relevance to the story?
I actually like Tidus and I understand why he is the main character. But, Vaan is just some commoner who dreams to become a sky spirate (I'm pretty sure many Rabanastrans also dream of it) and whose brother happen to be killed by another playable character
it's technically Gabranth, but it was not proven until Gabranth confessed about it along with the regicide
.

Honestly I don't think there was a main character. Eventually people make a choice on a main character, like with Terra in FFVI. They all evenly played their part, but none of them jumped above the rest as a main character. Ashe was a Princess, Vaan and Penelo are poor street urchins, Balthier and Fran are Sky Pirates, and Basch is a former knight. But none of them stand up above the rest as leader. But naturally when push comes to shove, it'd be Vaan chosen as MC because he's between 16-19 years old and uses a sword. >_>

As for Vaan as a character, he was just as bad as the rest of them, though probably second to worst since he was so annoying. Penelo takes the top spot of most annoying. You know its bad when one of the main characters gets kidnapped and you feel it would be better if you just leave her there.

I've dealt with the annoying, wide eyed main characters in countless JRPG's, but Vaan seemed particularly redundant, irritating, and just all around stupid. The fact is, besides Squall and Rinoa, the rest of the FFVIII characters had more personality than Vaan did. At least Balthier was entertaining for awhile. FFXII made a fatal mistake of focusing almost entirely on very slow moving but world encompassing plot while skipping over almost any sort of character development. Or character anything for that matter. In order to care about what's going on, I need to care about the ones who are involved, at least to a certain degree. That wasn't the case with FFXII unlike ANY other FF or decent RPG I have played.

When you have main characters like Cloud, Squall, or even Tidus who grow, mature, and have three dimensional personalities, what happened with Vaan and the rest of the FFXII characters has no excuse. But really, I think its a mistake to consider any of the characters as a lead because none of them are. I believe it was meant more as an ensemble cast, not one towering over the other like how it was with Cloud and Squall in their respective games. No one character towered over the rest in XII, so there is no 'real' main character.

It's the overall boring, snail paced story and characters with hardly any emotion or more than two dimensional personality that ruined the game for me. Everything else about the game; graphics, gameplay, sidequests, bosses, and all the extras is amazing. That would be enough for a dungeon crawler like Oblivion, but not Final Fantasy.

Hahaha, I can't believe the question "is he too feminine" even had to be asked.

Vaan was extremely annoying, with his androgynous look and creepy abs and flat eyes and whiny attitude [all of which frankly reminded me of Tidus]. He rates a big ol' "meh" from me.

I also agree with the "lack of personality" aspect brought up earlier. There's just.... nothing there. He has no reason to really be a part of this group. Why does he stick around for more beating? Because of his anti-Baschness in the beginning? Wouldn't that drive him away, prompt him to stay home? Is it because he idolizes Balthier's career choice? I dunno, he just doesn't make that much sense to me. Of course, I'm only about halfway through the game, but I'm just not seeing a driving force here.

Vaan was a pretty ordinary guy with hatred against the Empire. Even though I feel like he didn't do much in the story, but you gotta admit he's a lucky guy. He freakin joins Princess Ashe and the others to find a way to take down the empire! I'd hella want to join with Ashe if I had the chance! lol Being along for the ride is not that bad. Vaan got to explore more of Ivalice rather than staying in Rabanastre.

Well, Im just trying to look at the positive side of Vaan's character. He's just an normal guy like you or me and got lucky

He does not look like a man at all, it seems they made a girly type main character which i dislike, however i can't say i hate him...i honestly don't care enough about him.

I usually hate most of the Final Fantasy protagonists, like Squall and Cloud, Zidane and Tidus, but when it comes down to Vaan i simply don't care.

He didn't really had anything that could make me like or dislike him, his just a regular boy who likes to steal stuff, there's not that much of a background in my view.

When I first seen this:

I though of this!

Seriously!! Im not a Vaan fan. He was too whiny and pissed me off no end. I didnt like having him in my party, but because I have to have same level characters (how anal am I?!) I had to put up with him. He ranks with Tidus for me as another lead character who is too fucking annoying to care about. Dont give two craps about his past or what his ambitions are. Nothing, I feel nothing for him.
