I voted for X. Not because it's my favorite in the series but because I genuinely think it had the best storyline. Not surprised to see VII winning, most will vote for it because it's their favorite. But to be honest....yeah, it had a great storyline. Up until the end. The ending was kinda....crap. Idk, the whole thing about
Sephiroth summoning Meteor to destroy parts of the planet so then the planet has to heal itself and Sephiroth would draw energy from the Lifestream then....
I don't know. That all kinda seemed out there and very odd story telling to me.

FFX was much more simple and complex at the same time. A timeless tale of good banding together to stop a destructive force. Good vs. Evil....you get the deal.

And of course it has a tale of corruption..specifically religious corruption. This game had a lot of issues that it talked about and faced. What I've already mentioned plus racial issues as well. (Al Bhed vs. Yevonites) And dealed with subjects such as war and a high dependency on machina, or machines.

But not just looking at issues it brought up....the characters in and of themselves made the story amazing. Yuna, of course, brought the story to life with her will to pursue and to do the right thing for the people of Spira,
and to willingly die for them
. Wakka, with his racial tensions and the
loss of his brother Chappu, to Sin
. Lulu with her connections to Chappu and other Summoners she guarded in the past. Rikku with her will to
keep Yuna alive
. Kimhari with his problems with Yenke and and Biran. Auron and his connections with
Jecht and Braska. And the fact that he's sworn to protect Tidus and Yuna. And that he's unsent
. Tidus with his will to finally go home and
finding out he's a dream, and dealing with his father being Sin
.

I find the symbolism in the game and story to be beautiful... and the story in and of itself to be fascinating. Not to mention....it has a good story because the game is based on a story ("Listen to my story..."). That's the whole point of the game. Without a good story then the game would have been pointless.

That's why I think it had the best storyline.

If not FFX, I would choose FFVI. Just because the story of Terra is also fascinating and the game as a whole was a very interesting.

FFVIII. I won't go into details because I'm afraid of the FFVII orcs--er, I mean the fans, even though they do act like orcs sometimes.

I'm just gonna settle on the fact that FF8 is the only FF to date to make me cry my eyes out past the first time I played it and one of the only two FF (the other being 9) whose characters I genuinely cared about. You don't do that without a great storyline.

Best part about the whole thing is probably the one element everyone nags about: It was subtle. Too subtle for its own good sometimes but I loved that.

Though I speak from a limited experience of the entire FF series, so far I would have to say 7 takes the cake.

The story is magnificent. It has such a wonderful history and setting and the mechanics are truly flexible and brilliant. The story itself is incredible.

The story-telling on the other hand, is absolute shit. It really needs an update in the way the story was told! Because it was told so badly, most people were just left confused and pissed off, feeling like the didn't have any kind of resolution. In fact, everything in there makes perfect sense -- you just have to play the game about 5 times and pay very close attention to what's being said to piece everything together. That's how I figured it out.

Aside from that, though, FF7 has a wonderful story, and I can't wait for a remake to tell it in all the skill and subtly and talent that it deserves.

Warning: Spoilers out the arse. Deal with it.

Normally I would say VIII, but, as good as it is, It goes a bit too fast paced for me. It seemed to run through the story and there wasn't near enough development as what could have been. For instance, take out the Obel Lake crap and put in some more on character development between Selphie and Irvine. Seriously, those two kept getting pushed back for Squall and Rinoa.

Story wise though, my vote goes to FFIX. Unlike the shite that is VII, which based its premise on the fact that the protagonist has amnesia and is guilty of identity theft, FFIX pushed the amnesia to the back. Sure Zidane didn't know where he came from but thats not brought up untill later and even then its only a mystery; it isn't until the third disc it plays a role.

The story actually has a subtlety to it instead of the blatent 'kill sephiroth'. It starts with a simple kidnapping (simple my arse) simply to protect a princess. It quickly escalates into a Queen trying to take over the continent and just as she's gone, it turns out that theres been someone pulling her strings the entire time. So you have to stop him but there's a twist, he's not here for world domination in the conventional sense. No, he's here to absorb the world into another.

Wait, another world? Damn right. So what do they do? They go there to stop it cause, hey, who wants their world to be absorbed? So we get there and find out hey, everyone looks like Zidane. AND this is apparently his homeworld. Lovely. So we go and find the bad guy and take him out only to find that the puppet master is back and he's getting ready for their home to be absorbed. They stop him obviously but if the evidence on Oeilvert is true then Terra is screwed anyway. So now they want to get back home. But puppet master man says fuck that shit, imma destroy this world and you with it and you can't stop me -sticks tongue out-. So you manage to escape on the airship thats been in the princess' nightmares (Shymallamalan: What a twist!).

You came back and find that the world is covered in Mist. Again. Goddammit! And after you work so hard to get rid of it! So it's back and there's a big glowing ball above the mist making tree. SO we have to penetrate it with our nightmare airship and invade this great big white testicle int he sky. And it might as well be one seeing what you go through in it. Big tenacle monster that squirts at you. Tentacle hentai! -runs-

So you get to the end and kill puppet master, well defeat him, he's not dead. Then SURPRISE!!!!! WTF boss appears. Who the fuck is this guy? Idk and idc cause I'm gonna fucking kill him. -kills-

So there you go. Fucking amazing story. Screw FFVII and your whiny 'I gotta kill Sephiroth.'

Eeee...this should have been one of those multiple choice polls. It depends on your personal taste.

FFIX had a really great medieval setting but the storyline was generic. Evil, narcissistic villain. Princess in distress. Selfless hero. It’s sort of a back-to-basics game.

FFVIII ad a mediocre story. The game play is what made this game. The only thing that gave the story any amount of volume were fan made assumptions, such as the Rinoa=Ultimecia theory. Otherwise it’s bland, and the final boss didn’t get as much limelight as she deserved.

FFX had a truly original story. It has the same basic character settings, but the history of Spira, the summons, and the storyline, was all actually pretty rich.

It’s a tie between FFVII and FFVI for me. Both games had characters with well defined personalities and deep historical references. The plot was thick and interesting in both games.

From this list i voted XII. (Would have been FFT :(.)

Why XII? After hearing it came from Yasumi Matsuno, I had to buy it. What I hadn't realized was how expansive the world was, every nook and cranny had something going on(scripted but it's nice to see NPC's walking about and detail on the smallest corners FFX had really bad camera angles.) No random battles(praise be), the battle system was also so much fun. People complain about the gambit system, but I played on active choosing what each of my character did for the entire time, so I wouldn't get bored and changed accordingly to the difficulty of a battle.

Good:

  • Character cast (voice actors)
  • Storyline
  • Huge world, going off exploring very early in game
  • No random battles
  • Music is beautiful
  • A lot of side missions
  • Battle system
  • Graphics are nice to look at and has a feeling of its own
Bad:

  • Vaan should not have been added to appeal to 12 year old girls, Penelo could have been a street dancer of sorts
  • The License Board was too straight-forward( I liked it more than the Sphere Grid though)
  • The story ending just plummets , ends way too fast.
  • Espers needed a bigger part, they had an amazing background story that went to waste :(
  • Hearing FF fans moan at how bad the game was because it didn't have any romance in it and how they quit one hour into the game.

FF IV ABSOLUTELY:
The game that's stuck in my head.... a different variety of characters...
Cecil (a general... and soon becomes king)
Rosa (becomes the king's queen)
Kain (another general)
Yang (becomes a king)
Edward (a prince)
Edge (another prince)
Rydia (surviving summoner and was raised by asura and levaithan)
Palom and Porom (twins)

IV or VI. Don't make me decide.

Weellll I vote for VI, i found the way the story progressed to be at the right pace and engaging, and it kept me coming back is probably my second most often replayed because of that plus Kefka is an awesome bad guy. if i could pick two IX gets just as much praise but hey im kind of a IX junkie

I started getting interested in the Final Fantasy series about a month ago, even though I've played games and heard about this series all my life. Gotta start somewhere/sometime I suppose *shrug*

I chose to play IX first after seeing the style of the game, reading about it, and recieving opinions from personal friends. Definately no regrets, so worth the $9.99 PS3 download! I will always favor this if I play another FF game. I'll probably play X next.

I have to say its hard between FFT,FF7,FFX and FFXIII but I think ill go with FFVII mainly because the story is too hard NOT to forget and it sone of the most memorable ones for me as well, plus I could really get into the storyline it had, easy to follow nothing to hard to understand about it, epic story indeed.

I would say X because it showed great relationships and reflected important subjects in the world. FVII was good too, found it quite confusing at first..

XIII definitely not in my opinion.

I wont ask why? too many people hate the game enough so I can imagine your answer .___.

I don't hate XIII at all. I just think the story line is by far the weakest point of the game and disspointed me. There was little surprise thoughout the game, weak character interactions and a boring ending.

Im totally the opposite It had a great story, the only bad part about it for me was it starts you off right in an intesne moment and you wouldnt know what was going on or what their talking about (unless you actually spoiled yourself and looked up info before getting the game like me) I didnt like the walking by a character and they talk way to fast, but these are just minor things that didnt effect my overall decision.

I actually liked how the characters would all have a conversation or run ahead of me as im trying to explore a few stuff (the voice over in the game was great during battle and outside of it) and building the characters, stats, wepons, etc was all great.

I thought the ending was kind of sad actually, seeing how
both fang and vanille offered themselves up saving the world and turning into a crystal for it, and the pain and torture that was dealt to fang before the final fight made me cry actually

When I said character interaction, I mean the emotional exchange that they had. The way they interacted whilst talking, not how the game displays the conversation (ie characters running ahead). I don't think it was interesting enough tbh. Didn't really make me emotionally involved. And if you don't get that, it just seems very silly to view, ie like overacting. Just me though.

I have to say that XII has the best story out of them all. It's tied at number one in my favorites next to IX and X, but I really enjoyed its story more. I think Fleur summed up much of my love for it in her post in the XII love or hate thread. I really enjoy the political side to it all. I've recently taken an interest to politics and all that stuff so playing through it I enjoyed how it was much more complicated than just someone trying to destroy the world and takes more thinking to understand it. Also had the amazing voice acting and great characters like Doctor Cid and Balthier. Also... at VII having the most votes. The story for it was really not that great. But it wasn't bad either.

Im suprised I would think Fang and Vanille,Lighting and snow, etc had some pretty good ones. I dont even like hope but him and his dad is also another one. Im really big on fang and vanilles relationship above everything else though.

Well thats where differing opinion comes in. You seemed to be emotionally involved in the characters, I feel that I wasn't.
