Yes but do you think its a good game which made you get sucked in, or do you think its a game because you got sucked in?

I objectively think it is the latter.

Of course but I do look at things differently and I was way into it bfore the game came out with other stuff, so even if the game sucked and didnt wanna make me wanna keep playing I still would end up finishing it just because .___.

So then it really doesn't matter if its a good game or not. Depends on what the person likes and got into.

Before I answer, I've played I, II, some of IV and VI (but not enough), about 15% of VII, most of VIII, IX and X, all of XII, and am in Pulse in XIII.

Based on that, I'd have to go for either VIII or X. I found their stories the most engaging, which is the reason I'm the furthest in them (bar XII, which just had a very easy battle system...). I enjoyed VII and IX a lot as well, but neither of them caught my attention as much, nor made me feel as deeply for their characters. I really cared about what happened in VIII and X! In IX, I was more curious than anything.

Thats not with all games, yes it matters if its a good game or it isnt, but I was just saying if a person was allready into stuff like (can be anything from doing a blog, reviewing the game so their gonna finish it regardless, roleplaying, etc) It can effect your method of play. Some games is like that, and some that you just play without any plans for it then your normal reaction ... well it sucked,I got bored after 10 minutes, etc thats all it can be.

I am going to have to go for Final Fantasy VIII.

I mean... many other Final Fantasy's have fantastic storylines... perhaps some with more meaning and value such as FFVII. However... I am a hopeless romantic at heart and that is what tips the scales for FFVIII for me.
The Squall and Rinoa storyline really does it for me. It is so romantic... Also, I like the Sorceress twists and involvement of Laguna and co is quite an interesting addition.
What I love about FFVIII is that it pretty much grabs me from the first second. You watch the infamous opening FMV and already it has you asking questions and your fingers twitching to use the controller!

I'm torn between Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX, they both had really good storylines but it's hard to choose which one had a better one.

IX is was the definitive story for me, aside from the relatively unneeded I am your brother thing they pulled towards the end. It was what I final fantasy game should be, keeping to the classic formula and reinventing it for a more modern time.

Also disappointed to see one of the weaker story lines has the highest number of votes.

FFVII, it took my breath away being my first "huge" game and ofcourse it had sephiroth to make it even more thrilling. Ido enjoy the ffx storyline, but imo its a little too sweet...yes i said sweet. I like a little darkness which ffvII had plenty of.
The "weakest" storyline has to go to FFVIII, I never caught on. To me it was/is a B-story, like I want to replay it, to see if it gets better, but I turn it off before it even gets started *sigh*

I say Final Fantasy 9. It has some of the best character development. This could have gone to FF10, but X-2 completely ruined all of Yuna's character development in 10.

No one strongly defended VII? I find this surprising. I thought it had one of the more complex and at the same time, fucked up story lines.

I love how even though Cloud is the main character, he really isn't. You have Crisis Core completely dedicated to Zack and DoC completely dedicated to Vincent. You get the different points of views and you always get the jaw hanging moments where things start to make sense.

Then you have the characters that you love to hate or hate to love (or whatever) like Sephiroth and Genesis. Well, Genesis was mainly annoying due to his non-stop poetry reciting and Sephiroth just up and went ape shit.

You gotta love em still. They aren't really evil but they do evil things are good at it.

Yep, VII is my favorite, yet I would say VIII and X are pretty tied up afterwards. VI was cool too.

Nostalgia tells me to vote FFVII, as it was my first FF game and first non-Mana Square game, but conscious thought gives me a second candidate: FFVIII.

In FFVII, the story is multifaceted: concentrated around the epic adventure, but also with minor development of the side characters so you can see their motives, some emotional development, as well as in-depth psychological development of Cloud and the others associated with his past. Nothing went this deep until it came out and many stories since have owed their depth to it. It's unquestionably the most influential story in gaming history. And it raises a great number of moral/ethical questions - as many as FFVIII, I dare say.

What IMO stops FFVII from being as good a story is that FFVIII's story shows the impact characters have on the world itself. In FFVII, even overthrowing the megaconglomerate dystopian corporation has barely any visible effect on the people of the world itself. Until the ending, the residents feel Cloud has made a difference in a grand total of two locations: Fort Condor and Corel. FFVIII is only inferior to this in the sense that Squall doesn't do much more than Cloud to impact his world. It does explore his past, albeit with far fewer swerves, but IMO, the real paragon of FFVIII's story - and indeed of all FF stories - is Laguna.

This is what I like about FFVIII's story. It's so unconventional and experimental that the main character isn't the main character. Squall's love with Rinoa grows, he helps her try to overthrow the president of Galbadia, his past with the others (particularly Ellone) was very well done, he saves existence during the closing 2% of the game and almost gets stuck in a void. But Laguna...

Falls in love with who eventually becomes his world's most famous musician, as a low-class soldier.
Endures the tragic loss of that love, thus inspiring said singer to write her hit song; said woman (still part of his story) gives birth to Rinoa when her father helps her deal with her pain over losing him, thus indirectly bringing one Sorceress, the Timber Owls, and the game's romantic female lead into existence.
Accidentally comes across the Lunatic Pandora while Esthar is trying to study it.
"Falls" (I'm so, so sorry) in love yet again, takes care of a certain orphan who greatly impacts Squall's own future, fathers Squall (the game's "main character") himself, and is forced to make a choice between standing by his woman and raising his kid or rescuing the orphan girl that's relying on him.
After rescuing Ellone, becomes a famous writer whose articles are still read.
Visits the Shumi and has enough impact for them to build a statue of him ~15 years later, not to mention to make him into a celebrity among Moombas.
Heads a resistance that overthrows the second most powerful Sorceress in the game's canon, thus creating the future of the series' most advanced civilization, and becomes the President of said nation.
Meets your party several times without them knowing it, including - of all places - in freaking outer space.
Fails to return to Raine and Ellone, leading Ellone and Squall to end up in the orphanage in the first place - and later in Garden.

In short, Laguna's responsible for more than merely his game's story; he shows how one can shape his world and the people in it. His is the most complete story I've yet witnessed in a game and is actually more complete than those I've witnessed in many films or books, for that matter.

I got to say that storyline wize 9 is the best by a fair way, it has a mixture of many difference types of stories which i find works very well :D comedy, love, sadness, happiness, it has a bit of everything which I love :) also I love all the characters in the game, they make the story extra specical in my mind and FFIX was also the first bFF i finished sooo i got that to back it up as well :)

If it wasn't for FFX-2 runing it and Rikku, FFX would be my choice because i think the character development in THE FIRST ONE was much better than the character development in final fantasy IX, the character development of yuna was just amazing :) but FFX-2 ruined her soo badly :/

oh yh I adored the scene when your not alone is playing in FFIX, that the final point that proves that FFIX has such an amazing story :P

I like X's storyline the best. It's a hard decision, since I love VIII and IX too and VII is also an amazing story but for me X is just so different and I could really connect with the characters. I like how there were lots of twists and it wasn't too cliche. For me it's the best storyline and I'm glad it's second in the poll.

Xx..xX

Glad to see IX and X are in the Top 3.

IX and X have the best stories. IX because it goes back to the classic fantasy setting (as opposed to 7 and 8), X because it's different than from the ones before. Both games I can really connect to the characters (most of them anyway).

I say X, i enjoyed the story the most, and it had great plot twists and a great ending. some days though i think VI might be just as good or better.

I've played each of these games all the way though (except the craptastic XIII I BARELY made it though that and the sequel on rentals) at least three times, and none of them keeps me coming back like. . . wait for it. . . ready . . . SUPER MARIO BROTHERS!

I mean that mustache and those smexy overalls and the Italia-
WAIT WAIT I MEAN FFVII teehee

If you disregard the retarded Advent Children movie that just ruined everyone and should have never been made, but include Crisis Core, it really is highly character and internal struggle focused more than the other titles. FFIV pioneered this, but imo FFVII executed it better than both IV and X (another title with lots of internal conflict) from a compelling cast of characters, to an intricate but never too complicated plot, to fun mini games, this game really had it all back in its time.

I know it's aged not so well, but personally speaking, story does stand the test of time, at least for me. I really can gush for hours on this game, but I'll wrap it up with saying FFVII has the best overall story with Crisis Core being an EXTREMELY close second. (It makes me cry every time. >~<)

Let's see... everyone says that FFVII is the best. While it did have a good story, I liked the FFXIII and FFIX stories.

FFXIII... I saw the potential of it. The characters were great but the story was told... pretty blandly.

However, the build up in FFIX is awesome and just completely amazing.
