Not a day goes by without me hearing someone bitching about the lack on "manly men " in final fantasy. i am sick of people calling male ff characters pussies or gay just because they are beautiful and don't resemble roided up cavemen. I dont know about you but when i play games i like to look at pretty people not ugly creatures. If I wanted to look at ugly people i'd go outside. Besides doesn't final fantasy have enough token uglies ( barret cid, auron wakka snow sazh )

If you wanna play as a hideous knuckle dragger go play gears of war instead and leave my sexy bishies alone. .

Wait wait wait...who is saying Cloud is not manly? Um excuse me but if that's not manly... I don't know what is. And believe me...I know manly :kinky:

And there are plenty of manly guys in Final Fantasy by big/buff standards. Barret, Basche, Auron, Snow, etc.

And what are token uglies? :hmmm:

Uglies who are.... tokens???

Still, I don't this bishie thing. Is it to do with Yaoi or something else entirely?>>

Squall and Cloud are very manly, however there are characters that dont seem like men and can quite hurt their characterization like Kuja and Seymour. Im not asking manly men ala Gears of War or the lots of bald guys this generation but i dont want men that seem like woman and make me question my sexuality when i think they are gorgeous.

Can't say I agree with either side of this argument. On the one hand, I wouldn't say Final Fantasy needs manly men because it already has them; just look in the right places. A lot of the lead male roles are not all muscles and hair because they are young, not human, purely stylistic in their physicality, or a combination of these. This works well for lead roles because it visually portrays a character who is not yet hardened; in other words, they've got some developing to do and as the game's player you get to see them through it.

On the other hand, I also can't say that manly men are ugly, because real manliness goes way beyond appearances. The FF characters that act manly can look like a slug and they'll still be likeable and respectable. At the same time, they can be stylized and attractive to a certain degree and by their actions you'd never question their sexuality. Like kratoscar pointed out, this side of the coin can be taken too far, though. It's a matter of balance, but generally I notice the male characters' actions more than their appearances and therefore generally haven't had a problem with how FF characters are presented.

Cloud's the only ff character that's ever constructed a building before and works on vehicles :rage: some fangirls label Cloud manly :mokken:

Anyway, there are plenty of manly men in zeh efef series.

barret cid, auron wakka snow sazh

Cid and Barret are grouchy old men, they aren't meant to be good looking (Though, to be honest, I kinda find Cid somewhat attractive. LET THE FLAMING COMMENCE.) I also find Snow and Wakka attractive as well, but that's beyond the point.

Looks aren't everything when it comes to video games. Hell, I'd happily choose a sasquath-looking character that had an interesting characteristic over a little 15 year old pansy that whines about everything (Tidus... *Cough*). Don't get me wrong, I don't mind younger males in Video games, hell, for a long time, I was a huge fangirl of Zidane.

Point being, not every character male can look like a teenage chick flick actor.

I don't think it's a matter of wanting manly men, it's more a matter of not wanting stupidly girly men. Square Enix don't seem to realise that not all men are either so girly than you'd be forgiven for mistaking them as cross-dressing flat-chested girls, or so macho they make the cast of DBZ look effeminate. There are perhaps one or two exceptions to this, but otherwise the rest of them throughout FF history fit into the category of either overly manly or ridiculously girly. Character variety is what is needed, and that doesn't necessarily have to come in the form of a manly male protagonist. Maybe if Square Enix didn't reuse the same character designs and tropes over and over and over again people wouldn't be so quick to criticize.

...other people, anyway. Until they stop fucking around I'll always criticize

Many people who dont play eastern games tend to believeanly has to be muscular and square jawed and those stereotypical things. In ff, those features are there but not all at once and the characters are more human. Its not the typical hero westerners look for. Its why Nier had an incredibly built and long haired mdel over the younger ones.

Sometimes people want unrealistic casts.

The answer is simple: They are scared of manly men's testosterone poisoning.

Manly FF men... :belz:

But seriously, some girls (and guys including my self :britt:.) Enjoy manly, caveman, steroidic, type males...
Why? Animals and many people look for the healthiest looking people to mate with (People with large muscles who (in general) take care of themselves/their bodies) which can coincide with attractiveness (which many dont see muscles to be as, their lineage is therefore destined to grow weak and frail, eventually making the offspring so unattractive that mating ceases and natural selection has won... MUAHAHAHAHA!)

But seriously, muscles... :melody:

girly feminine men are a bore, manly ones are stronger, have better personalities and do not seem so pathetic.
To be honest though i wouldn't want to play a game as some hairy dude if that is what you're meaning when you say 'manly men', I don't mind hairy dudes in real life but for some reason in video games I'm not really into that haha, though facial hair is ok.

I like girly men and manly men. tbh. Even though Snow is annoying and is basically a huge dumb ass he is actually quite handsome looking. Cid Highwind despite his age is actually quite sexy as well. Though I think that there's a line between too girly and too manly, and Final Fantasy games sometimes cross that " too girly " line. Take Vaan, does anybody here find him attractive ? I don't think so, but Cloud. Tons of fangirls.

I also find Solid Snake really hot before he gets really old of course. And he's basically the polar opposite of a Bishie. I don't mind a Bishie if he acts and his character is more like say Zidane and less like Vaan. If the Bishie or manly guy acts like a whiny tosser then he's going to get bashed that's the issue here, it's his personality not how he looks. Though sometimes looking pretty can help the character gain more fans that he usually deserves because of how "hot'' he looks. I mean look at Sazh and Barret. I mean where is the huge amount of fans that they have compared to like Older Hope and Advent Children Cloud ? Nowhere almost because they don't look " kawaii desu ne "

Huh, who knew? All this time when people were voicing their fatigue towards the tidal waves of effeminate looking JRPG male characters that are by now a rather dull and embarrassing baggage for the genre, we in fact only wanted more Marcus Fenixes and guys with biceps the size of doors? That's changed things. I thought I was just pining for some character design variety rather than the other extreme end.

Why do so many people want manlier men in Final Fantasy? Because western social ideas of the ideal-looking man differs from the current Japanese bishōnen and ikemen styles that pretty much dominate youth culture there. Obviously there are exceptions to this, but it's generally the case. Simple as that.

Though having said all that, I don't care that much if a main character looks a bit effeminate, so long as their characters are well-written, not hollow caricatures or walking husks, and don't make me want to punch a small animal. This isn't Final Fantasy, but take Edge Maverick as an example. His face is pretty much as ikemen pretty-boy as you can get with that effeminate jaw and face, but if he was at least likeable as a guy that I could stick with for a good 50 hours of the game, then fair enough. Unfortunately, I fucking hate the guy with a passion because of his character and how he was written.

I couldn't play gears of war because the characters are tooo goddamned ugly. I tried to but I just couldn't .If there was atleast one token hot bishie, i might have put up with it. But there were none. Game was filled with disgusting knuckle draggers. I don't care how good the game is, I it is very hard for me to play a game with disgusting character designs. I feel so disgusted after I played the game for 10 minutes, I had to play five hours of crisis core to make myself feel better.

Marcus fenix is the ugliest video game male ever. when ever I look at him I want to barf. If men ever looked like that in real life i'd either buy lots of Sephiroth/Cloud/Gackt posters and blow-up dolls or start dating women .

You should play the Growlanser series there are enough bishonen there for you to fawn over. I dont like Marcus Phoenix but just because he is a shallow testosterone boost character but seryously Sephirot is NOT hot ,

I get what you're saying here. While I was trying out different MMORPGs, my friend kept trying to get me into World of Warcraft. I wanted to play it 'cause at least she would be around to help me in the game, but I was totally turned off by the character design. -_- The only characters that looked cool were the Blood Elves. After that, I decided to just stick with FFXI 'cause the character design is amazing imo.

I don't really like "manly men," but I think my definition of manly men may be a bit extreme. For instance, a character with a terribly distracting and unrealistic muscular body who is just gruff, rough, && without much of a personality. Unfortunately, that's how I stereotypically define "manly men." With that said, I don't see much of that in FF games. Barret may have tons of muscles, but he also had a personality && he wasn't a hollow vessel of destruction, lol.

I'm not so sure I would consider Cloud, Snow, Noel, Vincent, etc. as "manly men" 'cause they just don't exude that sorta aura to me. Plus, they have pretty boy faces imo, lol. Maybe Auron and Cid could be "manly men" 'cause of their demeanor && gruffness (although they're not overly muscular, so it's a bit of a contradiction from what I stated earlier, lol...)

Interesting topic! xD
