Aerith or Aeris

You can call me either > u >

Who does it make angry? D:
I guess some people just see it as more 'official'.
When I'm offline, I call her either when in conversation.

well people I guess like her japanese name more than her US version but doesnt matter really I just go with the flow and call her Aerith havent had a problem since just seems silly fighting over a name O-o

I still say Aeris is her correct name. Just because they called her Aerith in KH doesn't mean it's "correct". Keep in mind that they also called Squall "Leon", is that his correct name? No. Didn't think so.

The Squall/Leon thing is a bit different though to Aeris /Aerith (note: Not saying either one is wrong!). People don't call her Aerith just because that's how it is Kingdom Hearts.

Aerith is pretty much the 'official' spelling of the name now (as far as I know of) particularly in examples such as Crisis Core where she is labelled as being "Aerith" rather than "Aeris". Still, like I said before, there was a translation duality issue in the romanisation process anyway, so either one will do, I don't think it really matters. Although I have seen people who play Crisis Core, see the name "Aerith" and treat it as being very authoritarian though, telling people off for calling her Aeris. It really doesn't matter. :8F:

It was revealed shortly before or after Advent Children that Aeris was a mistranslation. In Kingdom Hearts and Crisis Core (CC being before the events of FFVII), she is named Aerith. So officially, her name is Aerith.

Most fans prefer calling her Aeris because that is what they came to know her by.

Also in Kingdom Hearts, Yuffie calls "Leon" by Squall and she is quickly corrected.
This obviously shows that he is hiding who he really is.

I know, I just hate that they call him Leon instead of his real name. Everyone who plays KH first calls him Leon and it's irritating :hmph:

Usually Aeris, because I'm lazy and I have to make a conscious effort to call her "Aerith."

On a side note, language mistranslations/fuck-ups aren't always a bad thing; "Donkey Kong" is an infinitely better-sounding name than "Stupid Ape." I'd say the same for Aeris in comparison to Aerith.

Im new to this but one thing that I do not get is
why does Aerith/Aeris have two names?
:holyshit:

There is already a thread like this, I believe.

Aeris was a mistranslation in the original game. The japanese romaji name is 'Earisu'. The English translator thought 'Earisu' = 'Aeris'. But '-su' can also refer to '-th'. The Japanese creators later announce Aerith as the correct name. Some fans still use 'Aeris'. Some accept 'Aerith', like me.

Basically, they released a game with a character named Aeris and later changed it to "th," like anybody cares. It's like that time Ernest Hemingway came out and said "I changed it to Young Man and the Sea. Call it that from now on."

Even though I called her Aeris when first played the game, I somehow found out it was Aerith and I liked that name so much better that I changed it on my next playthoughs and just called her that for the rest.

I prefer Aerith for the simple reason it both looks and sounds better. Further, it more strongly emphasizes the (supposed) connection to the Greek word "aether" which means "heaven" or "sky". Anyway, the whole "aether" thing may be my personal conjecture, but I always liked it seeing the role she plays in the story and the redemptive aspect of her character. She's like a conduit to heaven (i.e. Lifestream).

For those unaware, "aether" later became "ether" in English :)

Aerith is all I know about. I didn't even realise there was an Aeris until recently. Thats just sad.

Reall? When did they actually make it Aerith though. Is that the original Japanese name given to her? My dad bought me FFVII when I was like 12 or 13 when it was a "greatest hits" game for the playstation. When I met her the default name was Aeris.

Earisu is the original name and the one I know, but you hear the game developers talk about 'Aerith' as you would say in english, but they put it as Earisu because thats how it would be pronounced by the japanese players. Does that make sense? Thats how I think it went anyway, its been a long time since Ive heard it though.

Regardless, 'that annoying chick' when referring to her will suffice for me :p
