I voted for IX, and I'll tell you youngsters why. Not because it has the best characters or was the most revolutionary and not because it had the best story. It simply remains, to this day, the most well-done of them all. The translation is spot-on, the characters are colorful, the gameplay is engaging and varied and fun, the action is tight (that's right; I may be old, but I know the street lingo. Now round up your posse and shaddup.), the FMVs are well-done and the thing had a polish that no other FF game in America had had up to that point. It pulled off exactly what it set out to: give a great tribute to the gameplay style that we all loved in the games before it, and set the stage for newer, hopefully better, things to come.

IV is right behind it, being the most revolutionary of all the games (to us Americans, anyway). It was the first RPG I know of that played like a novel, and it forever changed RPGs. The story of IV remains one of the best of the series.

X is third, because it is a completely original take on the RPG, with everything from the voiceovers and FMVs to the gameplay, and onto the storyline. The bad guy (Sin) is the most original of the series, even if the truth was a familiar twist.

Then there's VII, which I still hold as overrated. Still, one cannot deny the impact it had on the franchise (though it was, truly, just a few steps down the road that VI started), and the genre as a whole. Cloud's tale, though amateurish and lacking the polish and depth it should have had, remains a very engaging tale, with some of the biggest twists of the series. Plus, it was just plain FUN. Midgar and the Gold Saucer are some of the best settings the series has had. And Sephiroth walking through fire, and ...Aeris...

VI was, in its day, just as miraculous and brilliant as VII, with an even better story and characters. It is eclipsed by VII only because VII brought the franchise to a new culture. VI is, in many ways, the best of all the games, but only recently was the translation really done well, and the depth and beauty of the thing is sometimes hard to grasp when you're looking at such a cartoonish display. The World of Ruin also felt rushed, unfortunately; I think a lot of story and gameplay opportunities were missed there. But who can ever forget the Opera House? Or the destruction of the world, leaving you gasping, "I--I just LOST!" *reset* Sadly, an overlooked gem limited in a lot of ways by its format.

VIII I loved, but it did copy a lot, and didn't really knock over a lot of tables. The leveling system was a joke (pure pointless drivel, becoming nothing more than bells and whistles when your enemies level up with you). VIII did have some of the best characters of the series though, and brought new meaning to FMV.

I voted for.... IX, VII, IV and II.

These are my reasons why;

VII was my first RPG and my favorite. I love the spin offs and have beaten at least a hundred times over if not more. I also own every spin off and version of Advent Children/Complete available in English. It's my fanboyism.

IX is the best, IMO. It has an amazingly compelling story and the characters are so awesome. I just love everything about it... it's like perfection to me for some reason.

IV has such a great vibe for me, it was my first two bit Final Fantasy game. When I fell in love with VII I played VIII with much disappointment. I could not get into the Junction system or past the fact that all the playable characters were human. That and I did not enjoy the no MP thing either. So after I gave up on VIII I went to IV, my first two bit Final Fantasy... and I loved it. Although, I have yet to beat it because I keep getting stuck beneath the Earths' crust (In both the original and the remakes). I just love the characters (Especially Cecil).

I chose II because out of I, III, V and VI I loved it the most. I went through a phase where I only would play the 2D games to get up to date on my Final Fantasy history. I didn't enjoy any of them but II and the reason is because of the amazing dialog system. It's so much like Oblivion and Morrowing that it was shocking. Having different choices for dialog for 60% of the NPCs was breathtaking for me. Then how you leveled up was cool too. Level up by using it (Much like Oblivion and Morrowing). So that game got mad props from me.

IX. I was introduced to VII but couldn't get into it. Speed things up a few years and re-introduce FF into my life. This time by the means of IX. I really enjoyed how the story progressed. How Garnet lost her voice due to all the stress, (not something that (i think) has been done before). The connection between Kuja and Zidane. The music in it's own right is simply magnificent. The characters were colorful and had their own unique ques about them. Each with a diffent background that draws you in even more. The battle system was somewhat meh though, aside from trance. I relied on tha tthing so much during the later portions of the game. The ending was phenomenal to boot. Also, what other FF do you know of that was used in a Coke commercial?

Final fantasy war of the lions (tactics original) Becuase of the great storyline, epic amount of stuff to do and A great game for people who love tactics (like me)

My favorite is FFVIII.
It's really fun, and has a great story.
I love the junction, and battle systems.
The card game is tons of fun too!
My only problem with it is that the GF summoning clips were too long.

For me it's IX. I think that the whole objective of the FF series is to take the player as far as possible in an imaginary fantasy world, with imaginative characters, creatures, places, transport methods and contraptions. To this day FFIX is the one that does it best. Obviously it has the advantage of having better graphics than FF I to V, which all come a close second in portraying a fantasy world.

FFVI was good because as the last SNES game it implements all that was good in the previous SNES iterations. Again FFIX wins here because it does the same with the original Playstation series.

i only started playing FF.i have got FFI, FFII, FFIX and FF ring of fate. i have only played ring of fate soooo.

Please stay on topic and tell us which game you think is the best of the ones you have played, ui f you havent played any yet, post when you HAVE done ^^

It says I voted in this but never replied? Hmmm...

FFX. It got me hooked on the series. Loved the characters, the plot, the history, the enemies ability to draw out the gamer's emotions, and the music. Everything about this game makes me want to play it and discuss it more and more. It's graphics pull in the new gamers to the FF series and get them interested to see what the rest of the games in the series are all about.

Easy plot to catch on too, but a complex under-story lies beneath that you do have to sit there and think about for a while to get a good grasp on it. You will be confused here and there, but the most you look into the game and pick out the small details you may miss at first, the more comprhendable the story becomes.

Final Fantasy IX. It's concepts seemed quite interesting, and the characters themselves were quite good. The general setting and premise of it appealed to me quite a bit.

I have only ever played 7, 8, 10, 10-2 and 12.

But in my opinion 7 is the best out of them, simply because it had such a fantastic story and I liked all of the chosen themes. I liked the idea that Cloud's story about how he was a Soldier etc, wasn't actually true and how he had taken Zakk's story and made his own. I also felt connected to all of the characters at least once throughout playing it. It just shows that a game doesn't need to have fantastic graphics to be one of the better games available to people. A lot of people I know still speak about it, still play it and love it more than any other game, because a lot of games can have amazing graphics but can have the worst story behind it and rubbish gameplay. Also the soundtrack for the game is one that stands out to me amongst all of Nobuo's work.

10 comes second for me because once again it had an interesting and gripping story. It was the first FF game to come out on the PS2 and I remember buying it and falling in love with it instantly because of the lightheartedness of the beginning which soon changed. The soundtrack is another example of Nobuo's fantastic work.

12 completely changed the way the battles were done, I liked the change but I still love the original methods. It just feels like such a majestic game; though for some reason Basch really annoys me and Penelo seemed a bit too happy, like Rikku on a bit too much sugar |:

10-2 I feel was a bit of a girls game more so than guys, though probably some guys would have liked playing as a group of girls wearing not that much. But it was still a decent game and added a little bit onto the story of 10. The piano soundtrack for it was lovely as well.

8 is one that I haven't played as much as the others but its still good in its own right. I liked the change from the small cute little blocky things that were the characters in 7, to the more realistically proportioned characters in 8.

I've only played x, III, and IV.

So... Out of those I'd have to go with X. The story was AMAZING, and the ending nearly got me crying. :D

I chose X because it was the first FF game I've played so it's understandably my favorite. I love the game play, blitzball, the story, the characters, the plot twists, the music, the sphere grid....just everything about it. And yes, I chose X-2 too. I loved the game too, sue me.

FF IX is my favorite. It has so much charm, and the scenery is just gorgeous to look at. The towns are so much fun to explore. And the characters (Zidane, Garnet, Vivi and Steiner) I found very engaging. It's the perfect game for me.

Final Fantasy VII is by far my favorite RPG of all time. I love the materia system. Oh, and 100%'ing this game is actually enjoyable!

After VII, I also greatly enjoyed (in order) V, X, XII.

VIII was good but certainly not a favorite.. IX was boring, imo. X-2 made me want to remove my eyes.

I would have to say that Final Fantasy VII is my favourite Final Fantasy game. It's incredibly enjoyable from start to finish, even getting 100% completion is just fun to do. The characters and storyline are some of the best in the entire series.

After Final Fantasy VII, I'd say VIII and X were the best. I found Final fantasy IX to be rather boring and X-2... well, it wasn't the best out there but I still enjoyed it somewhat. Yes, shame on me. lol

I love VI the most from the old skool generation, followed by IV and V but I haven't had much of an opportunity to play them all the way through.

Why is this a multiple choice poll? If it's called "best" it should only allow one choice (the game the user thinks is the best) and their reasons why. Using this model you can throw up another vote for Final Fantasy VII, it's a game I really enjoyed in the series.

Final Fantasy IX,
from beginning to,
end,
i loved it,
beat it,
replayed it,
to me all,
the characters,
blended with thier,
different attitudes,
and personalities,
though my favorite,
was Eiko,
i liked her,
character's innocence. :P
After that,
Kuja is just,
awesome.
Going mad,
with power,
and not wanting,
to die alone.

I chose FFVI, because it's plot really was one of my favs and the villain was my favorite villain...I truly believe that Kefka was a true villain and I was really impressed with how he interacted with the main characters. ^_^
