Which game do you think is the best Final Fantasy Game? Please post your reasons for voting, as posts such as "FFVIII" or "FFXII obviously!" are discouraged and will be deleted as spam. Please tell us why you think this game is the best FF game, what you liked about it, why it's better than all the others, etc.

Final Fantasy IX.

The actual design concept of FFIX was amazing, even if it's not the best FF graphically the world design and character designs are up there with the best. The actual characters themselves are sensational, the soundtrack is probably one of the best I've heard from an FF game and the storyline is probably the best I've played, although in that respect FFXII comes close to storyline.

VII and I'l freely admit I'm a biased fan girl...It was my first ever FF game, well, RPG actually, so I was like woah games have STORIES?! Aat the time and it completely sucked me in, I was addicted no other game has had me playing 12 hours straight every dya for a week because I keep thinking Il save inaminit and turn it off....and I never do

I just loved the story, the battle system the characters everything about it. No other game captured me quite as much as this one did so imo, that just makes it the best for me

/end gayness <_<

My personal favorite is FFIX, for all the reasons Mercurial listed, and I'll add that every single one of the characters was enjoyable to play and/or watch.

But I think that the "best" is FFVI. Considering that it was on a 16-bit system, the soundtrack was pretty awesome (Vector's theme is in my Top 3 of all-time), the characters and storyline were deep and engaging, and the gameplay was killer. If that game was made for the PS2 or higher, it would break plasma screens with its awesomeness.

I think it's very close between VII and X. I personally, think VII is overrated, though still one of the best games ever made.

If you break them down:

Story: VII does indeed have a great story, but I think X wins comfortably. The story is so intelligent, and includes racial issues, relgion, control etc. As well as being creative, clever, unique and also unfolds fantastically. X wins.

Music: Again, IMO, X wins. I think X has the best music in any FF game. Not only is it good of it's own merit, but each piece absolutely epitomizes the place/even it accompanies.

Sphere Grid/Materia: I'm gonna call this one a tie. I ADORE the sphere grid; it's such an intelligent system that gives the player control, but at the same time making it realistic (ie, you can't just 'give' a warrior magic stuff- he has to travel that part of the grid, gradually gaining higher MP/MAgic stats and moves). Its very easy to get used to and flexible. Materia however, is much, much easier to use. Also the fact that you can level them up and switch them about is handy and helpful. I say a tie here.

Battle System: A big difference is that in VII only three people are allowed to fight at once, whereas in X you cant switch people in and out. VII is ATB which makes battles quicker, and perhaps more exiting. In X however, you have all the time to take your turn and this makes things more tactical. So it depends on whether you prefer fast paced battles, or more intelligent ones. I don;t think its fair to make a call on this one considering the differences.

Characters: VII has more iconic characters, no question. buuut, I'm giving this one to X. VII have a low level of realism, and development is there, but not to the same extent as X. X's characters are more realistic, complicated and quite frankly are more interesting. Cloud is overrated, and I've always preferred Kefka to Sephiroth (even tho Seph is awesome). The Zack/Cloud thing showed good development and character conflict, but X still takes it. Maybe not badass iconic characters, but realistic and presented well.

Minigames/Quests: X has the arena and collecting Aeons as its main side quests- which i think involve a lot of effort, and are interesting and fun. X takes quests, but VII takes mini-games. (I think blitzball is an awesome sport if it were real, playing in X is only 'ok' though.)

Difficulty: Boos battles are of a perfect difficulty in X, though stupidly easy normal ransom battles. VII has some easy bosses, some hard, some perfect, which would make it inconsistent with leveling. However, normal random battles are of a near perfect difficulty.

Emotional pull: X. X. X. Fantasic story presented with perfect timing, unfolded appropriately. You really think you know characters, and feel for them. Its like watching a movie. Same can be said about VII, but I feel X has it even more so.

Environment: Graphics isnt an issue here. I couldnt care less about them. X wins anyway. The environments are so beautiful and work well together to create the world. I think X pwns all 9 games before it in this area.

Overall: X. VII is great- but X is just better.

XII. My other top 5's are VIII, VI, TA, IX/X - in that order. Order change again, ohoho.

XII was great because it did away with some half assed love storyline, you could actually explore landscapes, surrounding areas, without having to travel on some repetitive world map. Gone were terribly annoying random battles - I was chuffed to bits to actually fight monsters like one should be doing :P

Glad to see Hunts back, and I liked the welcome addition of rare game. Storyline, characters, voice acting, pretty much spot on, for the most part anyway.

It's Final Fantasy VIII, just edging out Final Fantasy IX.

Reasons? I remember when I first got the game starting it up and seeing theopening FMV, and I think I fell in love with the game there and then. The opening was so fantastic, and Liberi Fatali suited it perfectly. And I found myself really enjoying the storyline and characters (some people hate both aspects of the game, but I was just reeled in), along with some of the best music in the FF series. And there's the ending, probably my favourite video game ending ever. It really capped off the game for me, I cared about the storyline and the characters and I felt I was amply rewarded by the end of the game - when Eyes on Me segues into the main FF theme! that camcorder bit! And the post-credits moment when...well those who have played it will know :)
I also liked how the game got you to piece together some of the plot details yourself without feeling like it had to spoon-feed it to you.

Though I do especially like all of FFVI to FFX, FFVIII always wins out for me.

Personally I'm gonna have to say FFVII. Graphic design wasn't the best but hey, it was the PSX (PS1 for those who dont remember it called X) so that wasn't too bad. The storyline was simply amazing. The materia was an awesome concept. Sephiroth was an amazing villan... everything but the graphics were amazing.

I do have to say, VIII is closely one of my favs aswell though. The storyline just wasn't the best to me... but everything else was fantastic, one of my favs to play to this day.

Right now it has to be VII, graphics wer jus unheard of at that point of time, story was jus sumthin ive really never witnessed in a game, but FF7 changed that. the battle system could hav been better, but ive only played half of the fantasies so i havnt played one thats awesome battle system wise. so as far right now its VII

X, X, X, X, X. Awesome characters, I loved the tactics with the turn based gameplay, amazing story and enviroment. Shit, it just flat out blew me away. FFVII was good, but ain't that good.

i am a big fan of FFIX as you may tell from my avatar. I found the story done rather well and i was hooked at the time. I also liked how it was more of a old world future theme with the castles and those jesters running around.

Plus it was the first one i actually finished, and i liked the chocobo game

Definitely Final Fantasy X for me.

It really is my favourite game of all time! The main thing that intrigued me about this game was the storyline and the relationship between Tidus and Yuna.

It was such a beautiful story and it made me so emotional at times.

I had a blast playing this game. I loved the atmosphere and the little towns you get to visit in Spira. They're so interesting and the majority of them are just beautiful.

The music is also the best I've heard in any of the games I've played. They really went all out when they created this game. It's sooooo gooood! XD

*Hearts it to bits*

FF VIII for me, cute pairs like squall and rinoa, plus great story too. the graphics of the game were excellent and this was the only FF game which i havent broke...

Definitely #X, it was the 2nd one I played when I was about 12 and I was captivated by it, I couldn't, for the life of me, stop playing it, the Battle System was perfect and easy to use, the Levelling up system was a bit different at first, but I got the hang of it after a while...

The music was magical like all of the others, Nobuo Uematsu is a fantastic Composer! :fan: And Tetsuya Nomura created the characters perfectly like all the others as well. The Graphics were absolutely amazing (I must say they are still better than XII) and it was the first FF to have Voice Actors, so that was cool. ^_^

All in all, I couldn't ever think of taking it off my top list of favorites. :)

I think a trend is what was the first final fantasy you played, and it is usually that, as that's the one that gets you hooked.

VII passed me by, so the first FF i played was VIII, and as I stated above the same is with me, VIII is my favourite.

I really like VII as a game, and after recently playing IX i fell in love with that too.

But VIII was great for me, especially at the time, (I think I was like, or thought I was like Squall, full of angst and didn't want to be dependant on anyone(my parents had just split up and i ended up fending for myself for a bit))

Breathtaking Movies, realistically rendered characters. An amazing story line (until time compression, I'll admit) with good back stories. The laguna/squall twist was great too. It was the first game to take me on a journey, and I lapped it up.

So no other game can compare, I love the ballroom scene, the end scene, the eyes on me song. IX and VII come close, but not enough to sway me, I just feel a certain bond with this game.

Uber gayness, but honest.

x and vii. x because the graphics and story where great. and vii because the story and gameplay were amazing even though the graphics were horrible.:)

FFVII Crisis Core the battle was unique and story was esquisite the biggest fault was it didnt stick to party systen as the orginal games

Final Fantasy VII always has been, and always will be my favourite of all Final Fantasy games, no FF game has had characters that you really get into and feel for...

To be honest, I was more effected though, when Nanaki found out who his father really was, when he saw him turned to solid stone by those poisoned arrows, I really like the music at that moment too.

Personally, I think Final Fantasy VII has the best everything. Well, everything but graphics, obviously. Aside from that, the soundtrack is masterfully done, love every bit of it, the battle system is good, it keeps you thinking when the game doesn't always wait for you to make a move, like in Final Fantasy X.

I liked the Materia system too, liked deciding whether to equip this weapon with this many materia slots and that materia growth, or that weapon with less slots, but greater power, it made you strategize a lot, for example, Cloud's Apocalypse weapon is great for mastering Materia (Triple growth).

And the cast of characters are my favourite of all. Cloud Strife, Aerith Gainsborough, Tifa Lockhart, Vincent Valentine, Nanaki, Yuffie Kisaragi, Cid Highwind, Barrett (sp?) Wallace, all great characters. Not so much Cait Sith though... Sephiroth was a great villain, he is also my favour FF villain, FFVII is everything I could ask for.

The overall gameplay is excellent, and of course, superb storyline, just love it, I've gotten through the whole game more times than I dare count (for something that takes so long, it is a good, long game. ^_^). So yeah, to me, this is the ultimate Final Fantasy experience. :D

Final Fantasy IX.
It has an AMAZING storyline, lovable characters, great classical gameplay, a good feel to it, and an awesome soundtrack. What more is there to love. It is the best Final Fantasy that there is. It was also the first game that I played all the way through (in the Final Fantasy series). I just can't get enough of it.

Final Fantasy VI
This was a close second. I love the characters, and the villain is my all time favorite! The plot is about tied with IX in more respects. The soundtrack is alright too (I love Terra's theme, that's about it from this game).

Final Fantasy Tactics
This get's my honorable mention. It's descent across the board: storyline, characters, music, technicals. It's the battle system that wins me over. I love tactics-based games. It's like an in-depth version of chess mixed with stratego. The job system was amazing, allowing so much room. You could make your party truly your own. I love the Tactics series because of that, so much. The more in-depth job classes and the battle system and character custimization, the better.

My second favourite FF game is FFVIII. I was really blown away by the graphics for it when it went into some cinemas, amazing for a PS1 game. :D

Soundtrack is of course great, got some fun characters, and a great storyline. The battle system was great too, Junctioning was neat. ;)
