I think most people who dislike it were introduced to the series on VIII or possibly VII and just didnt understand the character designs. As well as the referances to the old games.

The game was not originally going to be a direct installment in the FF series, just a homage to the old type games. But as it got bigger Square decided to slot it in as a last instalment on the PlayStation.

I love the game, the world map is HUGE and only opens up towards the end of the game making it seem huge. The characters were mostly lovable, except for Eiko. And the art work and design is just simply AMAZING.

I'm on that "I Like It" status. It was overall a great addition to the FF series, but I wouldn't go as far as to say I love it.

A little more effort would be appreciated - say why you liek the game as opposed to loving it

Well as far as I'm concerned I really think that FFIX is a great all-around game and praise the developers for wanting to return in some way to the essence of RPGs. The "fantasy" based FFIX was a comforting break from the futuristic trend that started to develop with FFVII and which continued in FFX and FFXII and by the looks of it FFXIII and FF versus XIII. there are a number of factors that "hooked" me:
a) the character design adds a lot in the way of conveying a purely fantastic world and reminds me of the older FFs before 3D.
b) the storyline is epic but remains simple at the core.
c) the characters are well-defined and memorable and harken back to the golden age of final fantasy (Vivi is the best example)
d) gameplay was a lot of fun and character customization was well-done I liked that characters could be fully equipped from head to toe (a welcome return).
e) Again the overall design of the game was beautiful and had a real story-book feel to it that I find comforting.
I could go on forever, I'll just limit myself to saying that this was one of the better installments of the series in my opinion because it kept true to how FF started out (well, mostly).

I Absoultey Love This game! It was my first ever final fantasy game that i had played and it got me into the final fantasy saga. I loved the music and the enviroments. The character designs i loved too! I think the story line was great. The only thing that i may not really 'love' is the ability system T_T it took me a long time to understand it but overall it is a great game!

the second game i played for the psone was ffIX , and i had VII with me...yet i would play more Ix than VII. I was a kid and didnt undertstand wat i was doing...but really liked it..the characters looked cool to me, and i remember playing with vivi..great memories...well i loved it i like everything about it, the story, the enviromment, the characters( zidane and vivi ftw) , everything damn!

I loved it it was the third FF game i played 7 was my first and my first most loved then i played 8 which i hated then thanks to my girlfriend she showed me a clip of IX and i loved the movie FMA scenes then i got it and was blown away not even after many years of playing other FF games 9 still and always will be my personal favorite

I absoltuely LOVE it! It's my favourite game ever, after all! So damn good! (And sad!) It was the first Final Fantasy I played (Not counting Mystic Quest) and I loved it! (And frankly still do!) I'm currently trying to get my characters up to Lvl.99. (Only Lvl.61 now.)

Quite personally, I liked final fantasy IX a lot. THere were a few things that i disliked, but the majority of it was really good.
It was the fourth ff game that i played the three above it being X, VIII, than VII. Since then i hadn't played the earlier games, the only reference that i got was "no cloud no squall shall hinder us" and when zidane sees the big sword in a weapon shop (sorry forgot where...). Now, after playing most of the previous games, i get those references. I've only played it one and a half times, but am gonna play it again soon.
As far as the characters, I thought it created really memorable characters. First off, it includes one of my most favorite ff characters ever (just look at my sig and pic :)), but develops the characters well in my opinion. You see the playful zidane, the zidane as he learns about who he is, and the zidane as he goes afterkuja. i believe he along with many other characters are well developed. The exception is quina. i didn't really like quina much.
I'm also a sucker for love stories. I like the romance between Garnet and Zidane :)
Playing the game was really fun too. I love how the abilities worked. The only thing that got to me though was the trance system. it's not bad, I just think it would have been better if you could have activated it whenever you wanted instead of whenever the gauge was filled.
Overall i really really liked it. one of my more favorites of the series.

my favourite of the ff series. i liked everything about the game apart from i fot sum bits of the story dragged a bit and the armys of lindblum get wasted by the mages in the cg scenes which annoys me u never see good guys win unless there heros lol

I love this game. I play it two times a year for the past 7 years, before i go back to college and on christmas break. It was a game that had an Awsome story, that kept you playing tell the end, and great characters. The main villian was a bit of a let down, but it was still a good opposition. The leveling system was great. And the Cut Scences were great and realistic.

The game probably attracted so much opposition because of the style of the game, that was not very realistic, but then again what game isn't. The story could have seem kind of cheesy, if you played other FF titles.

But overall the game was and still is a real thrill. One of the best of the whole series and like so many have said, etheir you loved it or you hate it.

I enjoyed FFIX alot, it is my favorite FF seeing how its how I even got into FF in the first place. I as well as a friend of mine are large Vivi fans seeing how we find him, in the actual word we used, epic. I liked how it had preset skills which was good for a newcomer to FF like me back then. People may come to hate that seeing how most FF games have changable magic and such.

Thats my thoughts anyway.

It was the first FF i played on and wow i love it. The setting is amazing, the story is amazing, the ability system is fairly robust, and I just love the music.

I thought the game was alright until I got up to Memoria. Nothing special, imho

But when I got to memoria, the encounter rate and flaw in the battle system really started to piss me off, so I gave up on it.

IX could have been a good story, but I really am not that much of a critic when it comes to stories. Stories are secondary imho :monster:

I did like the cast of characters, but I can't really say I hated it though.

I absolutely love Final Fantasy IX! It's one of the games I could just reply and reply over and over again. I actually have to talk my husband into letting me play it because he wants me to play one of the 95743 games that we have that I haven't beaten. ;p

It has such a great story. I think the characters are very strong. They go through trials in their own lives(that doesn't involve saving the world) while trying to save the world. I love Zidane and Garnet's relationship. It's so cute to watch their love grow. I love the abilities learning system and the battle system. I like how their are character classes like in the earlier FFs. I also think the artwork on the game is some of the best! The world on there is so beautiful. I could just go on and on.

I love iiiiiit. It was my first Final Fantasy game (although it was in German...lol and I didn't really get it but last year I finally bought the english version) and I was so addicted to it! I thought that the characters (Zidane, Eiko and Garnet especially), gameplay and the graphics were really good..yay.

its a good game but probably the junkest of the original made ff for the psx. the thing i didn't like much was the class system. it felt like there were no custumozation at all. im just not a fan of class system in rpgs much

I like it, most of the people I talk to about it say it sucks. The story was good some parts where dragged out a little too much. I personally loved the card game, I thought i was really challenging.
