The Downfall of Final Fantasy.

Well, Square's first bad move was probably with FFX-2. But I bet a lot of people just thought the game was a fluke.
Then there came XI. I don't think there shold have been an MMO is the main series. Like many other people have said, they sould have just called it Final Fantasy Online. It wasn't a great game anyway. Didn't feel like FF.
I heard XII was just as bad, with a horrible battle system and an uninteresting cast.
XIII, I have had my own experience with. It's a great game, but not a great Final Fantasy by any means. The graphics were phenomenal, but it's extremely linear, the music wasn't as good as the previous FF games, and the story wasn't all that great. It didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game to me at all. I doubt FFXIII-2 will be any better because SE didn't have much time to develop it.

Yeah, the series has definitely died. I don't think it'll every be as good as it was. Previous games had stories that you moved you, and characters that you deeply cared about. Its music was spectacular. It battle systems were great. The series used to be magical; it gave you a special feeling that made you know you were playing something legendary. At least we can still plug in our old consoles to relive those special moments. We can also still talk about those special moments on these forums.

The problem with MMORPG's is, they're probably such a cascow it'd be foolish ***not*** to make them. I hate the concept, and I think those games are time and money sucking succubii, designed to pretty much suck the soul out of you. I refuse to play any of them, be it a FF title or anything else by any other company.

I'm kind of guessing that outside of MMORPG's, it's simply just plain hard to reinvent the wheel for over a dozen times. To me it seems like videogame companies are trying too damn hard to reinvent the wheel everytime, and peppering games with more and more of those fancy schmancy graphics and everything else that's really almost irrelevant. A good story is all you really do need, the rest comes after.

Perhaps I'm just too old for this shit, but from ever since the first playstation came out, it's been a sinking feeling that for the most part, the gaming industry as a whole doesn't really care about good ideas anymore, but rather the graphics and GUI's that do everything.

Whatever the case may be, SE in my opinion is starting to run out of ideas. That's probably why some FF games have been kinda---lame and a little not keeping to it's title "Final Fantasy". Personaly, I don't mind any of the games but XII was ridiculously hard to finish and didn't make much sense. Pushing that aside, I'm still loyal to SE but sometimes along with other people, I wished that they would take more time into their gaming so that with some of the newer FF's, that it won't be a complete disapointment to gamers and that we'd still be playing like we use to in the old days even though from X and above are the newer gens to FF.

Yeah, I'll still be loyal to the series somewhat. I'll probably buy the new FF game, whatever it is, to get my opinion on it.

Final Fantasy games have always been made to make money.

:highfive:

All games are made to make money, that's what their primary purpose for the company is.

But there is a difference between making a good game that generates money because it's good, and making a crap game to generate money based on a BRAND NAME.

And sure, crap is a subjective term - but when the majority of a site set up to sing the praises of Final Fantasy are either indifferent or have an active dislike of one of their games, that indicates that they are doing something wrong.

Good point. Actually, I'm surprised at how poorly they seem to be doing with the recent FF games when with the advent of the internet, SE can now observe fan comments through forums like this. You'd think, aren't they watching us complain about these games all over the place, and go into elaborate details on why we don't like them? Can't they take the hint from this, and start improving their methods? It really makes it feel like they just don't care about that, they merely want to market FF more towards the action- type crowd since they are the biggest new market. So even if it means sacrificing the good elements, they are still going to do it, it seems, and it's a shame. I'll be surprised if they don't make some sort of spinoff with all the characters who have guns (Barret, Irvine, Vincent, Balthier, Laguna, etc.) running around doing FPS missions together, srsly :ffs:

FFVII; Dirge of Cerberus had Vincent running around shooting things a lot. I know what you mean though, I'm just waiting for Nomura to announce it. He's getting closer and closer with Dissidia.

I don't think they will do a Final Fantasy FPS game (at least I hope not) For the main reason that they publish the COD games in Japan. So hopefully that will keep them away from the FPS market which (i hope doesn't do that well in most of the world like it does in America and Europe, I don't know if it does or doesnt but I can hope right?)

But I also started playing some of the newer Square-Enix games. Anyone realize how far away they are from the tradition JRPG's the newer the games get? I know that they made other games that weren't JRPG's but those were there top sellers a long time ago even back when Square and Enix were two separate companies. Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were there top sellers and still are, but the rate people buy them after 10 dropped dramatically, in fact I think the Gaming company as a whole has token a drop to FPS games, at least here in america it has.

I hope for the love of Final Fantasy that FFXV or even one of these crazy spin offs there doing, I hope whoever is the leader of the group takes a bold stance and says "lets make a game not for the graphics, but for the story and game play, lets make a game like before X, simple but yet very loving."

Actually FFXIII was more in line with traditional JRPGs, it was really only Squaresoft that started off the whole free-roam thing. If you look at the really early JRPG's, Pre-NES/NES, then they are really linear. But then so was everything on an 8bit cartridge.

OK true you do got me there, most of those games were like dungeon like and you went left or right and all all that stuff, so I guess if you wan't to go that way there going back to a JRPG root sorta, but yeah I was getting at the more free roaming world thing.

So in other words another person thinking FFXIII is the end of Square-enix... or Final Fantasy.. Look I'm getting sick of reading about how everyone thinks FFXIII was bad and will be the end of FF games. Just because it wasn't what a FF fan wanted doesn't make it a bad game.

Besides all that theres going be more FF games that they already announced and are making and will sell 100,000 copies or more because it has the words "final fantasy" in it. So Final fantasy isnt going die for a long time.

I'm a huge FF fan, but i was seriously disappointed in 12 and 13. I agree with the article. They are straying away from what was making FF fun. If you played 13 and don't consider it one of the worst FF you've played then I'm confused. The last boss was the easiest boss in the series.

It was not the worst Final Fantasy game I have ever played not even in the main series. I actually like XIII and XII.

And I am telling you as long as a Final Fantasy game that has to somehow do with the main series (the number FF games) sells 1,000,000 world wide, it wont die, Square-enix wont die.

And think how similar are any FF games? each one is set to evolve from the last one, take a new challenge, a new leap. Think of FF game as a play thing Sqare uses to try and do the next big thing for RPG's. Graphics, story, gameplay, whatever it is. Square is under pressure to make the next Main FF game the "next big RPG" because for years the FF game was "The RPG to get" For the year. and I think even XIII was The RPG to try the year it came out.

FF has been going down hill since X. XIII is just another clump of ice added to the snowball.

So because "Final Fantasy" is in the title, then FF will not go away is your argument? I mean, I agree that that is why a lot of FF games are sold recently but just because a lot of people buy them doesn't mean they are good games.

I'm sick and tired of people that feel it is a personal attack that some say FF is in its downfall. Most of the people saying that ARE FF fans. Just because you are head over heels for a game franchise doesn't mean they are all the best games ever made. Nothing is perfect. FF is taking its blows now but could redeem themselves in the future. Or continue down its current spiral of shitty games. Who knows?

Again its all your personal opinion, like I said I like XIII and XII and well can't blame them for trying to go for MMORPG...

To say that everything is going downhill is kinda joke since even FF XIII that you claim sucks sold over 1 million copies.

and XII I think had over 3 million.

Am I taking it as a personal attack? No I'm stating my opinion like you are stating your so sorry i have a different opinion than you about certain games, I will only think what you think for now on....

I don't take it as a personal attack, but my opinion is that FF isn't in any sort of downfall. So what if they don't meet the fans excessively high expectations. I, and many others, like the new games. In fact, two of the games that most people tout as the best games, VI and IX, are probably my two LEAST favorite games. They aren't as captivating and appealing as the rest (and I do like each game).

You have to look at it from this stand point though. "Everyone" seems to want FF to return to what it used to be. That's all fine and dandy. But, I think if the series was still the same as it was 10 years ago, we'd STILL be having this discussion because of NO change taking place. So, when it gets right down to it, what do you people REALLY want? You can't have no change and change at the same time.

People are forgetting that FF used to be able to get more fans on name alone, but with the rise of western RPGs and the kids who only play online (who also have no idea what it was like when playing with friends meant taking your SNES or whatever over to a friends house...if you had to), name isn't going to get you ANYWHERE. They have to change to try and compete. If they stayed stagnant, they'd have been buried 10 years ago, and we wouldn't even be here right now.

The reason (at least it's what I think the reason is) people get offended when people start calling this the downfall of FF is that the so called downfall is an opinion that some people on the downfall side of the fence treat as fact when it is NOT. Just because YOU don't like the way things are going does not mean FF will instantly drop off the face of the Earth because you quit on FF.
