Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

mhm aha. This is a good movie and it has many good actors in it, John Hurt and Tom Hardy were very good in it as were Gary Oldman and Mark Strong. It is based on a John le Carre novel so obviously it is about spying and distrust and mutual suspicion. The colour scheme was very grey and subdued. The plot is that Gary Oldman has to uncover a spy in the Secret Service even though he has been more or less fired from it. It is very good. Ah yeds.
 
In Time.

I wasn't expecting much from this movie, it looked a little lame in the previews and it stars Justin Timberlake. I think going in with low expectations actually made me enjoy this movie more than I thought I would.

I enjoyed the concept of using time instead of money, I thought it was quite interesting, Justin Timberlake did a pretty good job of acting though I didn't really like the forced love story. It kept me interested enough and I didn't find myself getting bored so I guess it is a good movie to fill in any time with :grin: (lulz)
 
Underworld Awakening

2 words: fan fiction.

Actually, calling it fan fiction is an insult to fan fiction.. lol But, nvm.

I think the last Twilight movie was better.

+Fight effects and action sequences were good.

-Plot, character development, continuity, originality, etc = not so good.

Comments: We went and saw this with our work the other night and it was so good!

I love Theodore. He is so cute, especially when he's watching a scary movie all on his own. XD His little hairs stand up and his eyes are so big. XD

I really don't like Alvin though. He thinks he's too good. They should just do a movie on Theodore. :ryan:

 Score: 8/10 - Because there wasn't enough Theodore and if there was I would have enjoyed it more. >.<
 
The Devil Inside(2012)

I've seen documentaries about demonic possession & clips of those who claimed to be demonically possessed & think this movie has done the best job of emulating the visuals & phenomena.

Other than that, it was 'meh-ish'.

There's no surprises & nothing particularly shocking in the plot or story. The foreshadowing is obvious and cliche. Its predictable and doesn't have much going for it aside from creepy factor and the attempt to justify and deliberate the phenomena using something similar to scientific method.

Its shot in the documentary style a lot of low budget movie makers are using to try to make their work seem more credible or unique. Trollhunter, Grave Encounters, etc.

Pretty average, I would say.
 
Dragon Hunters (French: Chasseurs de dragons)

It's a French animated film that my fellow animation students and I watched during one of our club meetings. It's quite funny. I'd say it's a good movie ;D

It's better than some of the Pixar stuff that I've seen :hmmm:
 
Red Tails

We went to go see this at the theatre last night. It's a movie about a group of African American fighter pilots during the second World War. They really weren't trusted a whole lot during this war...but they slowly moved their way up to being one of the best fighter groups. The acting was pretty well done...and I especially liked the little bits of humor here and there. What really shined in this movie were the special effects. The planes and the dog fights looked so real you could literally almost touch them.

Overall I really ended up liking this...a lot.

9/10.
 
The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo.
(American Remake)

I didn't really know what to expect when I started to watch this movie. I'd not heard much about the book at all or the original Swedish version. I'd kind of expected it to suck a little because most remakes of great foreign movies usually do. But it was actually really great. It was so interesting but a little disturbing at times, the girl who played Lizbeth was so believable, she was a psycho but you couldn't help but love her character, I even liked Daniel Craig in it and usually I cannot stand the guy.

I'm really glad I gave the movie a chance, I really want to go and watch the Swedish version now too :grin:
 
Final Destination 5

I finally got around to watching this today. It only took me a month :wacky:

This is the classic Final Destination plot, just with different death sequences. Just when I thought they had played out every way someone could die in some ironic way I thought wrong...some scenes I had to look away from because you were literally waiting for someone to do something stupid so you could watch something gruesome happen. This movie REALLY took the effects to another level...my stomach churned watching a lot of the scenes. The acting was crap but I really didn't expect anything Gone With The Wind-like in one of these movies. It was good though.

7/10.
 
Chronicle

This film was actually a pleasant surprise to me. Prior to watching it I had only seen the short 20 second advertisements for it on youtube; which make it look pretty shit.

It's a bit difficult to express what I liked about it without giving much away. So bear that in mind. But I loved the camera style and I liked how it was kept consistent throughout the whole film. I also liked how the film avoided the cliche love interest for the most part. I also liked how suddenly the film went from a light hearted mood to a much darker tone. Most importantly I liked how the film took the time to make me care and sympathize for the characters before the plot developed.

All in all I was surprised that this film was actually pretty good. So yeah.
 
Trainspotting

I watched this with Hero three days ago, because he's interviewing for course transfer to Film so he needed to write a critical review. We were going to watch City of God but his copy didn't have English subs. :wacky:

The first time I watched it, I wasn't paying much attention to the small details, so this time, I looked for them - themes that reflect society and the individual personalities of the characters. I can say I enjoyed watching it even more the second time around. I'm even considering looking for the novel.


Spirited Away

Right after Trainspotting, which left me with a dark and heavy feeling, I suggested we watch Spirited Away. This has always been one of my favorite animated films. It was his first time to watch, and he loved it. Again, I looked for underlying symbols and I found there was a lot. The concept of losing/forgetting one's name, the scene with the river god and how the dirt had to be washed away for him to be free, No Face's story... Not only that, but I love the soundtrack. It's a masterpiece. ♥
 
This is England

Basically it's about a young boy's association with Skinheads. It touches on skinhead culture as well. There is reference to the original association between skinheads and reggae. It also depicts racist skinheads and the association between some skinheads and National Front. In the end, the film leaves you with the impression that not all skinheads can be pigeonholed as the same. I thought it was a pretty good film.
 
Phantom Menace is 3D.

It was good, and the first Star Wars film I've ever seen (No Joke). I didn't really grow up exposed to Star Wars, so whatever. Hate all you want. I liked it, even if most people hate it. I found the acting pretty good, and the only things I hated were Jar Jar Binks (he's annoying as Hell) and how the movie felt a bit rushed towards the end, but oh well. The 3D really hurt my eyes after awhile, so I don't think I'll ever watch a movie in 3D again. We didn't have to pay extra for 3D, which was kinda nice, but I now know that I hate 3D (Also my first 3D movie).
 
The Artist

It's a recently-produced silent movie in black and white. The story is told using various captions (around 30 in the entire movie) and newspaper headlines, and the only sound is music,
although there is one section in which everything makes its natural sound. This scene is used to suggest the protagonist's feeling increasingly stressed.

It was certainly very good, with some humour and beauty. I'm not sure whether I'd see it again or not, because I can't imagine it being as powerful again, but it's certainly worth seeing once! :)

Swordsmen (2011) (aka 'Wu Xia')


The title couldn't be more generic, but it actually surprised me for being more than what I expected. Honestly, I would've been pretty content just watching Donnie Yen unload some kungfu on some dudes, and while it does deliver on that front, I was also treated to elements of a pretty decent psychological thriller, too. Yeah, I definitely didn't see that one coming.

The story basically involves an investigator looking into a seemingly routine crime scene out in the countryside...a local bumpkin ends up killing two thugs in self defense. As he pokes around further, he begins suspecting the hero is more than just the meek average joe persona he's letting on, and in fact could be the famous master assassin that went missing years ago. It's pretty amusing watching him try to prove it and slowly go mad over the course of the movie.

It's worth a watch if for nothing other than the beautiful cinematography. Especially recommended for PSJ.
 
Chronicle - wasn't sure what I was going to make of it, but it was a very good film in my opinion. The main character you could actually sympathise with, and even though it was odd at times, it was quite gripping. I'd probably actually go see it again.
 
127 hours
i saw it in the cinema last year and recently bought it on dvd. it's a very tense film once it gets to the main point of him being trapped in the canyon. a lot of the time films that are based on true stories drop a lot of facts, or are just plain crap, but 127 hours was neither of those things. it gives you a very claustrophobic feeling when he's trapped, since the camera hardly leaves the area he's stuck in
 
Chris and I watched the Leonardo DiCaprio version of Romeo and Juliet last night. It's been years since I watched it and, having recently worked on the play for some GCSE students, I was interested in seeing it again. I remember disliking it the first time. I didn't dislike it this time, but I didn't really like it either. Something about hearing the play spoken in American didn't sit right with me, particularly since Leo has a rather intense, slightly aggressive look - I always imagine Romeo to be rather soft and mellow! :lew: Malvolio in drag was also a little weird... It was an interesting take, a mixed bag of good ideas and those which just didn't feel right.

Movie: Sanctum

Comments: It wasn't as good as I thought it would be. It is basically about a group of cave divers who get trapped in the worlds largest unexplored cave system in Puerto Rico. I was expecting one of those claustrophobic films where they have to worm their way through tiny holes full of water, but most of the film involved the relationships between the characters, which was pretty predictable and boring. When the movie started I predicted who would be the ones to die, just to see if I'd be right and to my surprise I was. While it wasn't a terrible film by any means, it didn't make me feel anything, whether that be tension, fear or amusement.
 
the woman in black
i went into this expecting to be absolutely terrified, judging by reviews i've heard from a lot of people, so i was a little let down in the end. it was a wonderfully put together film, and creates tension and suspense very well and it's definitely all about the atmosphere.
even though i thought daniel radcliffe acted well in it, i'm still unsold that his character would have a deceased wife and a 4 year old son. i think he'll always be seen as harry potter by most people though.
