I'd actually recommend FF8 and not Crisis Core.You're gonna get second thoughts on FFVII and the characters.Maybe cause I found the storyline cheap and pretty much copying the original. Of course it's up to you.I just wouldn't recommend it.Only to spend time doing something CC is good,but not...

Despite my first though being FFVII I knew it couldn't be it.It's always something else... But I'm glad,I don't want a remake anyway. FFIX deserves some screentime as well,it has been left in the shadows for a long time.

Like the others have already pointed out,you don't need to get it to use it in the last showdown.I never did at least,always found it a bother but this time I've decided to get it. It's a great idea that Cloud uses it to finish off Sephiroth and it's equipped automatically in the end.
